19th Century Indiana Jones
Player Collector – keyword is “player”, tries to collect bulk lots of their favorite player, may have multiples of one card; cards range from commons to 1/1s, does not care if it is base or AU/GU just as long as it is the player; does not like to spend for a card most of the time, but will trade for it; will purchase other player cards at a low price to use as trade bait; may collect one or more players

Player Super Collector (Player Collector sub-category) – keyword is “player master set”; has at least 80% of the cards ALREADY IN-HAND from the player’s checklist that may also include non-listed, obscure, little-known cards and at 50% of 1/1s produced to date in their collection; has good overall knowledge of the player they collect; a super collector may also specialize in obtaining just a collection of all or most (70% minimum) AU or GU cards from the checklist; focuses collection on one player

Prospector (Player Collector sub-category) – keyword is “rookie”; primarily collects and hoards rookie cards of a player(s) yet to play; buys low and in bulk hoping the player pans out to score high with the rookie cards they have collected; some may sell when the player becomes hot or they may keep the cards to just to brag “Oh yeah, I got a hundred of them”

Team Collector – keyword is “team”; collects complete team sets and/or the star players of that one particular team; the star singles may vary from base to 1/1s but is within the theme of the team he collects; they do not care if it is base or GU/AU just as long as it is of the team; may do trades to complete a team set

Team Fanatic (Team Collector sub-category) – keyword is “the team is all”; collects not only cards, but jerseys, mugs, pennants, clothes, gear, mini helmets, blankets, bed spreads, table cloths, etc.; goes all out for anything that is team-related

Set Collector – keyword is “set building”; collects/builds complete sets, whether they are base sets or subsets or parallels; does massive amounts of trading; may often use the special or star cards as trade bait

Box Breaker (Set Collector sub-category) – keyword is “box break”; buys boxes hoping to score on rare cards for sale/trade or favorite player/team items for personal collection; may build at least one set from the base cards of a box break

Vintage Collector – keyword is “vintage”; collects cards and/or sets from 1940 to 1973

Type Collector (Vintage Collector sub-category) - keyword is "card type"; collects one type of each card manufactured for each year, usually rare issues; cards do not need to depict a star

Prewar Collector (Vintage Collector sub-category) – keyword is “prewar”; collects tobacco items, gum cards, post cards and ads manufactured before 1940; most of these items are won at auctions, very few, if any, are traded

Advanced Collector (Vintage Collector sub-category) – keyword is “origin”; collects rare tobacco issues, postcards, posters and artifacts from the early stages of the game; the items acquired are close to or even more than a century old; rarely do trades, most items are won at auction houses

AU/GU Collector – keyword is “auto/game-used”; exclusively collects autographed and/or game-used cards of one or many players and/or of one or many teams

HOF Collector (Vintage Collector and Vintage/AU-GU hybrid) – keyword is “HOF”; collects all types of cards of HOFers whether it be GU or AU or base; many start their collection working backwards by decade starting from the most recent inductees since their cards are more easily obtainable

Old School Collector (Post Vintage/Pre-Modern hybrid) - keyword is "what's a chase card?"; collects cards that were manufactured from 1974 to 1989, before the "chase card craze"

Dabbler – keyword is “oh, that looks pretty”; collects whatever comes his way or catches his fancy or what is currently in fashion; no particular theme involved; a lot of times collects what is currently hot, mostly star players of various teams/sports and/or cards in demand

Flipper (Dealer/box breaker hybrid) - keyword is "action"; player/type of card isn't as important as profit potential; typically "flips" almost immediately while the item is hot; has no problem parting with an item as soon as he believes he has a fair return on his investment and does not worry about "what ifs"; not greedy and only cares about selling at more than what it was bought for, usually at 20%

Weekend Warrior (Dealer sub-category) - keyword is "how to be a jerk"; dealers who attend card shows only to amuse themselves and show off their collection; are rock hard when it comes to bargaining; you can spot them by their never-changing inventories and lack of customers at their booth; they are not interested in selling unless you're willing to pay for their outlandishly high prices

"Specialist" (Type-collector/player collector hybrid) - this collector's quirk on collecting is narrwed down to focusing on one small aspect, such as 3-color patches only, on-card autographs only, one specific serial # for any card they collect, only cards that capture the batter in a swing, cards that only show dunks, cards of one player from only one card company, etc.

"Flavor of the Week" (Player/Team collector hybrid) - collects the hot player or team of the week or month or season; has no allegiance to any player or team so wants change from time to time, usually in mid season and unusally more than once

I guess I'll go with team collector, but my biggest focus is Bagwell, Biggio, and Berkman. But if I see something from the Astros that catchs my eye, I'll buy it. I have autos from most of the Astros main players from the last 10 years.

When it comes to football, I collect current and Hall of Fame Raiders. So I gues that means I'll have to buy an Aaron Brooks auto when he gets one in his Raider uniform.

I chose Dabbler since the make-up of my collection fits this category best. However, the size of my collection shows that I'm pretty serious about my dabbling. biggrin.gif

I am definately a Team fanatic as I collect all that is Yankees, Jets and Knicks (although my Knicks collection is rather light. I need to change that). Cards, hats, mini helmets, autos, GU cards, action figures make up my collection and I'm not done yet biggrin.gif

Didn't see any one choice that fit me so I went with player collector.....since I did go from Yao Ming to Delmon Young to Pete Rose.

Have to admit, I was pretty surpised to see your Young's up for sale... ohmy.gif

I'm a little bit of this and a little bit of that kind of collector. I fit a few of those categories. I'm mostly a set builder. I'm building Topps baseball sets from 1975 thru 1995. I'm part player collector. I have a pre-war player collection. I'm a vintage collector. I have about 100 cards from the 50's and 60's. Mostly from the bargin bins from shows. And some times an old school collector. I have traded higher BV on cards just to get some lower BV cards I needed for my sets.

I honestly bought in to him as an investment. Some like to call it "prospecting" but I am SO far from a prospector it isn't even funny. I had some investing money to use and decided Delmon was a good bet.

Other than that, I like to buy what make sme happy...Pete Rose, some cards from the 70's, 1983 Topps, 1984 Topps...etc Certainly nothing that screams high end or prospector LOL tongue.gif biggrin.gif

I'm just a player collector.

Wow, I am telling you, I am looking at the terrific descriptions Robert listed... and then I am looking at what some collectors classify themselves as... Indiana, I believe you should have created a "collector in denial" category... laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

I thought someone might admit they are a Flipper, but not yet...

-Bob
The Ripper
I guess I had to best describe myself as a flipper. I have no trouble getting rid of any card(s). Basically need to fund my addiction so selling a card asap(while it`s still hot)is my way. I also enjoy building sets but they`re becoming much more difficult and confusing to do. You can also categorize me in the Team Fanatic class. I have a lot of New York Jets Collectibles from autographed 8x10`s to mini helmets to autographed and professionally framed/matted jersey`s. But I also collect anything football really. I have a few other signed jersey`s and lithographs of various stars like Joe Montana and Favre. Maybe I`ll get a few pics up one day of my Jets/football stuff.
19th Century Indiana Jones
Only 28 out of 3000? huh.gif
snowblink
Team Collector - but not necessarily interested in the 'complete team set' unless the players are all currently with my team, pretty rare anymore. Avalanche is all! laugh.gif

Team Fanatic - to a dabbling extent with pucks, team flag, hitch cover, jerseys, glassware, but it has to be a reasonably quality item of some everyday use to me, but no attempt to "finish sets" of anything in this category

Happy Collector - one who is content with the journey taken to architect their collection without regard to it's monetary value or perceived value to other collectors.
19th Century Indiana Jones
Anyone else?
ffman
I had to say dabbler, because I collect any star baseball players. Ripken, Griffey, Sosa, McGwire, Pujols, Andruw Jones, Chipper Jones, Greg Maddux, Pedro, Clemens, and so forth.
msuwendy
Probably a box breaker combined with a player super collector. Nothing beats the thrill of opening a brand new box of cards! I also collect all things to do with Mike Bibby!
19th Century Indiana Jones
How many members and only 40 votes????

Wow - good point.

OK, Player Super Collector, to be! I don't need to elaborate on who, but that s my vote!
19th Century Indiana Jones
Who voted "Advanced Collector"?
Clary209
Team Collector. Collecting all the teams from 1903 to present. That's my main focus. But I also have some star players going--Mattingly #1, Mantle (just what is inexpenisve or a steal to get) Berra, Ford, Maris, Ruth, Gehrig and currently Jeter and A.Rod. I'd like to get all the base cards for Jeter and A.Rod. The same for Mattingly, except as many of the 1/1's as I can and other oddball items, as well. I also love the yearbooks. I've come to realize that I'd love to live in NY just to get the newspapers--I guess there is all kinds of added Yankee collectible stuff issued by them each year--I'm on the wrong coast. smile.gif
Dillywill
Dabbler!!! I start Sets Teams and Player Collections all at the same time (no wonder i never get anything done)
notinbtnet
can we add a category for In Need of Card Collectors Anonymous?

I think thats what I fit in best. I would guess I am dabbler/box breaker if I had to categorize though.

I voted box breaker though since I am addicted to busting packs. laugh.gif
ITG Franchises Man
I don't know what mine would count as. I collect Stars from the 60-70-80-90-now type, GU & AU cards, and My favorite teams players cards
stlcards5
For me Im a mixture of box breaker, team collector, player collector; but my main interest is AU/GU COLLECTOR. I think that the most value is in these type of cards(even though i will probaly never sell them). Also its just a cool concept to have a jersey or what not in a card
