PEORIA — Organizers of the annual Joyce Thome benefit for the Children's Hospital of Illinois have collected many impressive donations for the live and silent auctions over the years, but few have the back story of the baseball cap donated by Joe Couri of Brimfield.
It's a 2011 World Series championship baseball cap apparently autographed by St. Louis Cardinals World Series MVP David Freese, All-Star catcher Yadier Molina, relief pitcher Jason Motte, a few more players, and Al Hrabosky, a former Cardinal and current Cards color commentator known as the "Mad Hungarian."
Oh, and Couri found it on an off-ramp along Interstate 74 last November, four days after the Cardinals clinched the title. Another thing, the find netted Couri at least a week's worth of minor fame as media outlets from across the country, particularly St. Louis, called asking why he was searching for the cap's original owner.
