Mr. President, as I reflect on the state of the economy and world affairs I pause a brief moment in this surreal and historic moment in time.
A man's word or integrity is all that really matters today. You have overcome much vitriolic adversity. Your views are in contrast to many who make up the old guard far right of yesterday. I applaud your efforts to bring people and factions together under a common goal, the betterment of this nation with emphasis of having no one individual left behind. Your "rehetoric" sounds too heavenly for some people to comprehend but I believe those that have true good in their heart and a tentative ear to listen to truths that are self evident must admit that anything is achieveable through hardwork and faith given a fair playing field and opportunity.

Sir, I am not a doom and gloom kinda a guy. The glass is half full for me, not half empty. I see grand opportunities for this nation and individually to step up and do our part to make a difference. I believe one pebble in the pond can make a ripple but a nation focused as one and not divided on ideology can create a Tsunami not witnessed by the world ever before! This is your moment, your time. Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer Sir wink.gif . As with all Presidents in the past, you understand and profess the road ahead will not be easy. From my miniscule experiences I must agree that no noble undertaking or task is easy. So again, I will pray for you like I have always prayed for previous Presidents and World leaders to be given the wisdom to guide their people to prosperity, tolerance, and tranquility.

I will pray that we all find commonality amongst ourselves as opposed to finding things to keep divides amongst us. We reflect on history and the past in order to find lessons learned be them good, bad, or indifferent. Mr. President, if I could be a bit forward and take the liberty to reinforce a bit of advice you are likely far too aware of; always trust the best assets you have. Those assets are your five senses ( Feeling, Seeing, Smelling, Tasting and Hearing), always trust them because they will never lie to you nor let you down.

Peace and God Bless!

like every president before him, i salute him and congradulate him, however, the verdict is still out. Lets all hope he accomplishes great things. every president ever elected has promised to do what is best for this country, every one swore and made numerous promises and every one has faltered with some and excelled with others. lets hope it's the later with president Obama. but again, the verdict is still out!

Joe,

You are kool with me.. Just having a bit of fun. Yes, I voted for Obama based on my available choices. I preferred Huckabee and Bill Richardson actually. I just hope as a nation we can move forward positively. Personally, I think Mitt Romney has a better financial sense than Timothy Geithner, but time will tell. Again, didn't mean to rub you wrong but I had to retort after the verdict is out comment you posted.

Sincerely,

Congrats to Mr. President Obama and I hope he can deliver on many of his promises and improve our country!

Congrats to Obama. It is a true historical moment in time. May he have the impact that last for generations!

It's a TOUGH act to clean with the current financial/economical/foreign affairs mess we are currently in. If McCain or Clinton won, I would say the same thing. This current president will have his hands full.

I hope the country pulls together and that we CAN make the difference!

Sorry guys, I can't join the warm fuzzy thread here. Congratulations on what? Fooling 57-some million people into thinking you have good ideas? I hope he doesn't deliver on any of his promises. I've yet to see the government do anything well and Obama just promises more of it. That doom and gloom speech yesterday followed by the market dropping is not encouraging. I am not hopeful for his presidency so I'll not pretend to be just to jump on the sweetness and light bandwagon. If I see positive moves by him, then I'll be more supportive. Until then, I'll be realistic.

All this emotion surrounding this time is confusing to me. We elected a president based on emotion and feelings rather than issues. That truly saddens me. No one talks about what this hope and optimism is based on in terms of policy. I know, I know, the world will love us again, a "smart" guy is in the white house (just how smart are these cabinet picks?), etc. I am not bitter or angry - I'm just sad. But I am optimistic because emotion is short lived and sooner or later, it will wear off and then the new administration will be held accountable for their actions - not just their words.

I certainly don't want to rain on anyone's parade though so continue to celebrate! Enjoy the "hope" and "change", whatever that may be. smile.gif

I don't seem to remember the left wanting to give Bush a chance in 2000 because he "stole the election".

I guess I have to modify a statement in my post. I am bitter about one thing - the way Bush was treated by the left and the media for eight years. Many people won't ever forget that so don't expect everyone to immediately and blindly support Obama now.

You don't have to "support" Obama. Don't be so negative about him every chance you get when he hasn't done ANYTHING right or wrong yet.

I'm not going to blindly shower him with praise because he hasn't done anything yet. Likewise, I don't know why some want to have such a hateful attitude yet for the same reason.

He hasn't done anything wrong yet, just promised things that are wrong like universal health care, signing the freedom of choice act, and closing GITMO.

I thought I clarified my feeling and it's sadness, certainly not anything close to hate.
ffman
Many, including me, view closing GITMO as a good thing considering the controversies surrounding it over the past few years.

aceecards bashed Obama without ceasing during the election. Yet in his topic he chose to at least TRY to give the President the benefit of the doubt.

The "controversies" were with a few select people who were punished. So it should be closed because it evokes bad emotions? (more emotions and feelings)

But to stay on topic, I refuse to be a lemming, riding a wave of emotion, over a cliff.

But I sure do "hope" I'm wrong about him!

What about his 90% approval ratings after 9/11?

And you say you dont want to rain on anybody's parade right after doing so for two paragraphs. Youre just a walking logical error lately.

And you "hope he doesn't deliver on any of his promises?" Are you kidding? You are actually so bitter after the election that you wish failure on the winner, even though his failure is directly related to the failure of the people and the nation? Come off it.

Please explain to me how that is any different. A policy failure is a personal failure when your at the highest position. He has everything riding on his policies, his reputation, his legacy.

While Bush was president, I didnt like him or his policies or his actions. He might have been a failure, but I sure didnt wish him to. He is the President. If he fails, so do we.

If you don't study and fail a test by putting down all the wrong answers, are you a failure as a person? No. You probably succeed in other things.
If I met you, I probably wouldn't like you as a person (based on the way you present yourself here) but that doesn't mean I want you to fail as a person. I would want you to succeed in life but I sure wouldn't want you to lead the country.

I do the wrong thing sometimes in my personal life as we all do. But as a whole, I'm certainly not a failure by any measure.

If "The One" didn't want the tough job with "everything riding on it", then he shouldn't have run.
ffman
Wouldn't you guess that if the President, the leader of our country, fails - our country isn't going to do too good either?

Failing a test and failing as President are two VERY different things.

"The One" junk is annoying. The only ones I hear carrying on about that are anti-Obama folks.

I thought I had made this clear but apparently I've failed.

I want Obama to succeed as President if the definition of success is that taxes are lower, personal responsibility is touted, our enemies are defeated, government shrinks, the stock market rises, etc. etc.

I want Obama to fail as President if the definition of success is that taxes are higher, health care is run by the governement, taxes are raised, our enemies are appeased, decisions are made based on how the world perceives us, abortion on demand at any time during pregnancy is law, etc. etc.

As far as "The One" label, we've lived with "The Shrub", Bushie, Daddy Bush's little boy, etc. as well as all the unmentionable labels for eight years.

Well, you've not only rained on the parade, you've managed to

I fully intend to enjoy and find inspiration in the hope, joy and
celebration that I witnessed in the bitter cold of the Mall yesterday.
There is, whether the ultra-right cares to acknowledge it or not, an
anticipation of glory and greatness in this administration.
Granted, your statement that emotion is short-lived, there are at
least 1 million of us that will hold on to it longer than you assume.

The bar is as low as it has been in the history of this country, if
a comparison between the present occupants of the West Wing and
those that preceded them is concerned. They can only succeed
at this point.

GITMO will require another thread, one which I shall initiate,

You describe two possible definitions of success, both being based on ideological grounds. I quote,

"I want Obama to succeed as President if the definition of success is that taxes are lower, personal responsibility is touted, our enemies are defeated, government shrinks, the stock market rises, etc. etc.

I want Obama to fail as President if the definition of success is that taxes are higher, health care is run by the governement, taxes are raised, our enemies are appeased, decisions are made based on how the world perceives us, abortion on demand at any time during pregnancy is law, etc. etc."

We clearly know which one of those you stand for. But what of practical success? Such as ending the recession or restoring our integrity abroad? Do you not care for these endings if he doesnt accomplish them in the way you describe above?

agreed, mostly. but the WMD intel was quite different then what was found, and barring the circumstances of 9/11, I can see why he chose to make the moves he did, and apparently most of the country as well. at the time, he had the country on his side, it wasn't til later, after lives were lost and months went by, that people started pointing fingers. and not just the intel, but the leadership of our trrops overseas wasn't quite up to par. since pitreus took over, things have started turning around. some decisions can't just be undone. the war is what it is. pulling out now wuld prove to be a big mistake, the same held true for the past couple yrs. true, he is accountable, being the president, but i still don't see him as a "failure"
