Full Version: A few questions about PS3

I know these questions might be kind of silly but I've been out of the video gaming world for awhile so I'm not caught up with the current crop of consoles. I'm thinking about getting a PS3 but basically just have two questions before I do.

1. Pretty much everyone I see with a PS3 has it hooked up to a nice HDTV with a nice big screen. I have a regular old 19 inch tv. Can I use that or do I need to have an HDTV?

2. I get my internet access through Verizon DSL. The game would be set up in my bedroom which is not the same room that my computer is in. What do I need to do to have internet access for the PS3?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

I can't help much on the internet question; I have to move my cable internet modem from room-to-room depending on whether I want to play Xbox 360 or get one the computer.

If the PS3 is anything like the Xbox 360, you will not need an HDTV to play. When I first got my 360 I had a regular SDTV, and the picture looked fine. It does look somewhat better on an HDTV (had to get one after my old TV croaked), but the picture you will get with a regular TV is pretty good.

Thanks for the help Cody. I would have to imagine that you're right about that.

Yeah I can't help you with the online thing, but it'll run like a charm on a regular TV. Trust me, I've played it on one.

Does verizon provide you with a modem and all that? If so just buy a wireless router and hook that up to the modem and the PS3 will find the wireless signal.

My PS3 is connected to my wireless internet... It was easy setting it up to the wireless network... If you don't have that I'm not going to be able to be much help unsure.gif

Thanks for the info guys. I do have a Verizon modem so I could do the wire less router. I'm still debating on whether I should get one or not. If I do though you can catch me playing COD.

As far as the tv goes, I have my PS3 connected to a crappy old tv, as well. It's not as nice as the new HDTVs but it works.

On the internet side of things, there are a few variables there that need to be considered. The first is the actual connection speed. Verizon (as with most ISPs) have different plans for different speeds. If it's one of the lower speeds, you may have some trouble playing games (especially FPSs) online. Latency kills gamers. You also have to look at the connection speed between the router and PS3. If they're far away, it can definitely cause some lag there too. Also, I believe the wireless cards in the PS3s are 802.11g, so you'll want to make sure your router is 802.11 g for best connection. You can get 802.11n, but it will still only go at g speed. Just make sure you don't get 802.11b. Of course, if it's possible to get a cabled connection, that would be best.

If you don't use your computer for gaming or streaming movies over the internet (Netflix, etc), I'd say get a wireless router, put it in the room with the PS3, and use a cabled connection from the router to the PS3 and just let the computer be wireless.
