Waiting List

mikeadd10

All members will be offered spots in the order they're added to the waiting list. If you would like to be added to the waiting list either post in the thread or feel free to PM me.

Draft process

1. Draft consists of 4 rounds of 30 picks per round.
2. Any sport can be selected in any round.
3. Each member can only draft one team from each sport.

With this method, we seem to find a good balance between allowing members to focus on their primary sports while still maintaining the desired level of randomness and multi-sport theme.

Starting this month, we have implemented a draft schedule. Each member will have specific days, depending on their pick number, when they must make their draft picks. Any members that fail to either make their pick or submit a proxy list will get a team selected by the host, or get a random team.

Determination of draft order

A random draft order will be determined for the 1st and 3rd rounds of the draft. That random draft order will be determined through the use of the List Randomizer tool on RANDOM.ORG. The 2nd and 4th rounds of the draft will be reversed from rounds 1 and 3 respectively.

Also, determination of the random draft order will be broadcast LIVE on Ustream.TV. That way, we'll all see what happens when it happens!

Trading of Teams

Drafted teams can be traded between club members up until a specified deadline - before the first box is opened. In addition, members are not required to keep one team from each sport.

Determination of Cards

All cards (base, parallels and inserts) are assigned to teams based on the following set of rules, in this order:

1) The cards will go to the team printed on the card.
2) The cards will go to the team pictured in the uniform.
3) The cards will go to the team the player currently plays for.
4) The cards will go to the team the player played for the longest (or is best known for).
5) The cards will go to the team the player was drafted to.

Any cards that cannot be determined by one of the rules above will be determined in a random drawing.

Cards that involve players from more than one team (e.g., dual AU or GU cards) will be assigned to one of the eligible club members by a random drawing. A multi-player card that includes a player from an undrafted team or an undrafted player does not open those cards up to every single member. Instead, the random drawing is still just be limited to the members that have the rest of the teams featured on the card. If one member owns more than 1 team on the card, that member will have their name entered into the drawing for each team they own.

Each pull from the 2 undrafted NFL teams will be given away using a random selection between all 30 members of the club. All of the hits and inserts will be drawn for 1 at a time, while the base cards will be drawn for as a lot for each team. So, even after all of the boxes are opened, there's still final chances to get some nice cards!

All random drawings will be held live on uStream.tv, and will be recorded for later viewing.

Transactions

Transactions will be created for each spot that is purchased. Those transactions will be posted prior to the first hobby box being opened.

Shipping

All base cards will be placed in one or more team bags, wrapped in bubble wrap, and carefully placed in a bubble mailer. All non-base cards will be placed in individual card sleeves, toploaders and team bags (multiple cards per bag). All cards are then placed in a bubble mailer. Delivery Confirmation will be used on all domestic packages and the appropriate Customs Declaration form will be used for all international packages.

Disclaimer

Here's the key thing to understand about group box breaks:

The nature of group box breaks is that each participant may or may not receive "great pulls" or even any cards at all (wise box selection should avoid this). Therefore, a member is purchasing the opportunity to take part in the group as well as any cards that result from that opportunity.
mjda
Welcome to a new month guys! I think all the new rules should be laid out there pretty clear. We've already had a few suggestions on swapping out the hockey boxes, and 1 suggestion on swapping out basketball. As a primary basketball collector, I prefer the selection that we currently have, but let's hear any other suggestions.

I've also went ahead and swapped Finest out for Allen & Ginter. From the breaks I've seen it doesn't look like a bad option. The only downside is the number of randoms I'll have to do following that break. laugh.gif

If your name isn't in bold in the list above, it means you aren't confirmed for August yet so please let us know if you'll be joining us again.

EDIT: I have sent a PM to all the unconfirmed members.
mjda
abcdefg has confirmed via PM that he'll be keeping his spot again for August.

No later than August 10, but the sooner everyone pays the better. That way this month isn't stretched all the way to September.

I've added my paypal address to the first post where payment details are. For everyone pays between Tuesday and Friday of next week, I won't get your status on the main post updated until Saturday because I'll be out of town.

mikeadd10 was unable to participate this month, but asked to be added to the waiting list. captkirk42 has agreed to take the spot that opened up, so we're still full.

Guys, I've been browsing boxes all morning trying to find something that would work for hockey. We've had at least a few people now that aren't happy with the initial selection. How would you guys like to do 2008/09 Upper Deck Ice paired with 2008/09 Upper Deck SP Game Used? I know Brian wasn't extremely excited about the Ice, but I'd like to keep it on the list if we can since it's a new(ish) product that we haven't done yet. Also, I know it puts us over the budget again but oh well. That's how we roll! laugh.gif tongue.gif Let me know what you think hockey dudes!
aceecards
This should be my last month of credit with Bob!
Derek4484
I be in favor of a ICE / SPGU Combo for hockey as both are good products that yield nice hits we could get more hits with BAP but we get plenty of it in other breaks.

For A & G you are going to have to do a lot of randoming for the non pro sports cards im assuming this isnt a big concern for you but just making sure that is what would be done.
aceecards
I actually vote against Giner and Piece of history ICE and ULTRA hockey and the basketball ID stick with UD products! There is no Lebron , kobe or MJ in any Topps products and the fleer stuff is garbage!

Football wise Topps hobby series 1 should be out for august and that would seem better than classics!

WAY too many randoms!

Way too many shortages in Ginter!

Pick another baseball product in my opinion!

and as far as that low end hockey junk cancel ice and ultra and sweet shot and pick something that has some everlasting value. Champs is a nice product and there would be 4-5 randoms from it.

OPC Premier is too pricey but a nice box of series 1 or series 2 with the young guns would be ok.. or another box of the bAP which yields 9 hits is a lot more fun than two boxes of dreck!

I think with the box selection process overall you have to think QUALITY over Quantity!
Derek4484
I agree Quality over Quantity is important but if that is something you really want to stress you shouldnt suggest BAP. Ice and SPGU are both good products if anything i would consider moving out ice for SPA (money allowing).

The basketball products do look weak maybe getting Threads or SPX involved be a good idea.

Ginter would be really tough for this kind of break but i dont really know what to replace it with.

Football i leave as is as Classics is a better product then Topps .

We did BAP last month, so I'm not sure we should do it again. However, it does yield us 8 autos! biggrin.gif I'll wait to hear from some more of our "hockey guys" before swapping it again.

With A&G, all the non-sports hits will be determined via random drawing. I'll just keep those cards off to the side and do the random drawing following the break. If you don't want us to do this, do you have any suggestions?

Finally, I'll look at replacing the basketball products with something else. However, it's still going to have to be a combination that will still yield us more than just a handful of total cards. Some of our other products have had single boxes with more total cards than we've broken in 2 months of basketball. I'll look around and see what I can find that we haven't done yet.

Mike, I got the notification and have updated your payment status to "In Progress".
mjda
What would you guys think about 2007/08 Upper Deck SPx (10 hits) and 2008/09 Upper Deck (4 hits) for basketball?
Canucksfan1812
I'm ok with it.....but I don't really know about basketball products.....

for hockey, we should do either Champs, SPA, SPx or maybe even masterpieces?
mjda
QUOTE(Canucksfan1812 @ Jul 22 2009, 05:25 PM)

Champs was one I looked at this morning, but didn't know what everyone else might think of it. I'm automatically a fan because of the non-sports stuff in it! laugh.gif We did SPx 2 months ago, but if we want to do it again we could pair that with Champs. What do you guys think? So far we have these 2 options:

Option 1: 08/09 Ice + 08/09 SP Game-Used

Option 2: 08/09 SPx + 08/09 Champs
northicehero99
Here is my thoughts on the Hockey:

Champs I liked but there are bad boxes. Most yield 3 hits (2 autos, 1 gu), but I have seen boxes with up to 5 hits. It has 12 rookies and some other variables that make it worth opening.

SPx I liked as there are 5 hits again there are bad boxes, but I think for the price this is worth opening.

My vote in hockey would be for that pairing.

I also like Steve's idea of getting a UD S1 or S2 for the Young Gun rookie chase. My recommendations there would be 07-8 UD S1 (lots of decent rcs Kane, Price, Gagner, Lucic, Ryan, Backstrom, etc), or 08-09 UD S1.

Why I did not like the others:

SPGU is an ok product but it is too pricey for the return in my opinion. Getting 6 gu at $20-30 a pack of which 4 are worth bv of $10-15 just does not make sense to me. There are some decent hits, but I think the risk to reward is just not worth it.

Ice while I think the RCs are cool, the product just lacks something for me, maybe that is because all the better rookies are very shortprinted at 1 per case or maybe it is the lack luster auto list.

I like these but here is why they are not good for group breaks:

08-09 Masterpieces is nice and one of my favorites, but all the teams are not featured in the product, so some draftees in hockey would be drawing dead for this product. The same goes for 06-7 Parkhurst, it is a nice product but not all 30 NHL teams are featured.

aceecards
I like your basketball Idea mjda.. lets please stick with UD products.. just a lot more chance of hitting a grand slam with that in basketball! Magic and Bird are nice in Topps but their prices have fallen as Topps has issued so much stuff that.. well it just aint worth it.

Hockey

SPA NO WAY

21 packs of bleh and 3 woohoos (maybe)

SPGU (for any sport)Dont waste your money it is total dreck and I opened a case of it from each in the past so if you want some GU let me know!

If you are going to spend that kind of money buy OPC Premier or football premier or baseball or I know only 5 cards but hey odds are a lot better of a major hit or two.

Champs is a blast all the major rookies and plenty of stuff.. including a possible randomized fossill..

football

Classic just disappointed me this year. id rather bust elite!

Those 2 products are close enough in price that we can make that swap no problem. I was actually planning on doing 1 of those this month and 1 next, but it doesn't matter to me. Anyone else want to swap Classics for Elite? I know we've had at least a few say they want to keep Classics, so we'll need more to swap.

In other news:

If I were to pull a cut auto of someone I knew, I could actually picture 2 things happening.

1) I might fall out of my chair!

2) None of you would get to see the card until the scans later because I'd be shaking so bad that it would just look like a blur on camera! laugh.gif

Hi guys,

Just wanted to pop in and say thanks for adding me to the open spot. Glad to get in on this group. I'll plan on getting my payment in either Friday or over the weekend.

RE: the Basketball swapping. Are the 2 boxes still listed on the front page the ones being kept or the ones that are being swapped out? Coming in a little late can get a little confusing. Anyway it's all cool with me Basketball is my least fave of the 4 sports. I'm not much into it anymore, I'm just a Bullets/Wizards type of guy (with some of MJ in Wiz or throwback Bullets Uni). So some months I might be doing some trading BKTBALL for one of the other sports.

Has the group done Sport Kings Yet? Or is it taboo because of the Non-big 4 Sports and Non-sports folks?

Pete
I'll keep my spot. Thanks. Will pay asap.
northicehero99
I will weigh in on the Classics vs Elite debate

Classics is nice as you get more HOF players in the product and a chance at a cut auto (1 case), and the GU feature HOF players.

Elite is mostly made up of current players, however there are nice patch hits coming out of this product. I think Elite offers one additional base rookie vs Classics.

I am OK with either of these, but I guess I would choose whichever ones price fits the budget better.
Kmart6nets
I much prefer the UD option for basketball than the Topps/Fleer choice before. Steve is right, the Topps/Fleer is simply not as good.

I know your kidding, but here is some data for others:

Edward Gay Robinson (February 13, 1919–April 3, 2007) was an American college football coach at Grambling State University. Robinson holds the record for the most victories (408) of any head coach in Division I-AA (now known as the Football Championship Subdivision) history.

Career
Robinson spent fifty-six years as the head coach at historically black Grambling State University in Grambling in Lincoln Parish in northern Louisiana, from 1941 through 1997.

During his tenure, Robinson established himself as the winningest coach in Division I-AA (Football Championship Subdivision) college football history, with 408 wins. (As of 2009, Penn State's Joe Paterno is the winningest coach in Division I-A / Football Bowl Subdivision history, with 383 wins.) Robinson is second overall in college football victories at any level, behind the 461 wins owned by John Gagliardi of Division III St. John's University (Minnesota). Robinson retired in 1997 with an overall record of 408 wins, 165 losses and 15 ties. More than 200 of his players went on to play in the American Football League and in the NFL. Robinson coached three American Football League players who would later be inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame: the Kansas City Chiefs' Buck Buchanan; the Oakland Raiders' Willie Brown; and the Houston Oilers' Charlie Joiner. Robinson also coached James Harris, who with the AFL's Buffalo Bills became the first black quarterback in modern Pro Football history to start at that position in a season opener. He also coached Packers defensive end and Hall of Famer Willie Davis and the Super Bowl XXII MVP, Redskins quarterback Doug Williams, who would ultimately succeed Robinson as Grambling's head coach in 1998.

During his coaching career, Robinson compiled 45 winning seasons, including winning or sharing 17 Southwestern Athletic Conference championships and nine black college football national championships [1].

While at Grambling, Eddie Robinson held several jobs other than football coach, including teaching at Grambling High School, and coaching the girls' basketball team during World War II. His girls team lost the state championship by 1 point. He also coached boys' basketball, baseball, directed band and was in charge of the cheerleaders, with a budget of $46.

After several losing seasons in the 1990s, pressure mounted for Robinson to resign. In 1997, news escaped that Grambling was planning to dismiss him. Public outcry — including condemnation from Louisiana elected officials — led Grambling to retain Robinson's services through the remainder of the season.

After his retirement, Robinson was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease; he died on April 3, 2007, at Lincoln General Hospital in Ruston, Louisiana, after being admitted earlier in the day.

I am OK with either of these, but I guess I would choose whichever ones price fits the budget better.

They're not much different in price, but since we've already had a few people say they like the football boxes selected we'll likely be keeping the Classics this month anyways.

I will, however, be changing the basketball boxes to the UD combo. It's pretty obvious that most people will agree that selection is better.

As for hockey, anyone else want to weigh in on the 2 options I posted yesterday?

Does that mean you are changing your focus from 246 to 411? laugh.gif

I've got the first post updated with what looks like will be our final box selection for August's break. While payments aren't actually due until August 10, I encourage everyone to try to get them in as soon as possible so we can start the draft process.

Speaking of the draft process, I noticed that Chris (crpalmi) implemented a schedule to go by for his draft. I'm going to go back and see exactly what he did, and how it worked when I get home this evening, but it might be something we can try to make our drafting process not take as long. I also plan on contacting Bob to see if he'll be around this weekend so we can get the draft board updated so that we can use it again. That will help save us from having to PM each member when their turn comes up. He's been busy with work lately, so we might have to do it post style again. Either way, I'll keep you all updated.

Also, everyone can start getting their proxy lists in now. That was very useful last month in moving the draft ahead several picks.

Finally, I want to remind you guys that everyone who pays next week from Tuesday to Friday won't have their payment status updated until Saturday when I get back from San Antonio.

Ok, so I got bored here at work and decided to look at Chris's schedule process now. It's a bit more harsh than our current system, but I really do think it's something we need to make this draft work efficiently. It would also get our draft complete in a maximum of 10 days! Let me spell out how it would work.

Each day would require that 12 picks be complete by the end of the day.

The draft would begin as soon as the draft order was complete, AND posted here in the thread. From that time, picks 1-12 would have exactly 24 hours to get their picks made. Let's say I posted the draft order at 9pm EST on Tuesday, then I would suggest that anyone who hadn't had the chance to make their pick before 6pm EST on Wednesday go ahead and submit a proxy list. 24 hours from the time the draft order was posted, I will hold a random drawing for every member that didn't either make their pick or submit a proxy list. At that time, day 2 will begin with the same rules.

Here is how it would work this month:

August 10: Payments are due prior to this date! The draft order randomization video will be done. The order will be posted, and day 1 will begin!

August 11: Picks 1-12 MUST make their picks, OR submit a proxy list.

August 12: Picks 13-24 will be up.

August 13: Picks 25-36.

August 14: Picks 37-48.

August 15: Picks 49-60.

August 16: Picks 61-72.

August 17: Picks 73-84.

August 18: Picks 85-96.

August 19: Picks 97-108.

August 20: Picks 109-120.

This would leave us with at least 10 days at the end of the month to make trades, bust the boxes, and get them shipped out. At that time, we would start September's break!

This is really something that I believe we need to start to help keep the draft from taking so long. Let me hear what a few of you think. If it looks like a positive return from you guys, we'll try this in August and just see what happens.

Im all for a draft schedule similar to that proposed ..Im proxy anyway so!
aceecards
although I dont think that ICONS, A&G and Piece of History are "baseball focused sets" and will result in numerous randoms (especially piece of history) I find no fault with the remaining boxes!

Piece of History is a throw away product and hate seeing its name in there and although I collect A&G hard I do NOT recommend it for a baseball choice. Icons also contains I believe celebrity mfg patches! Heck why not do a box of americana instead and random everything.. laugh.gif

Champs will more than likely yield 4-5 natural history cards and maybe if we are lucky a fossil redemption!

I wanted to quote this post on this page in case some people missed it on the last page.

Sounds good to me.

Well, if nobody has anything else to add we'll go ahead and use this schedule for August's break. I'll go ahead and lay the dates out in the first post.

By the way, it looks like the draft randomization video will be held on Monday, August 10, at 9pm EST. I'll have to check my schedule at work to make sure I don't work that night, but Mondays are usually empty.

I'm fine with however you want to handle it.. I'm usually around anyway!
