but I've been accused of that before so this is nothing new.
I found a new direction that I want to go with my collection....and that is to collect at least one card from EVERY player who has ever played for the Texas Rangers....from 1961 to present. I just got a list of the players....it's over 21 pages long. I want one card...of each player....of each year that player played for the team. For example....Bernie Allen played 2nd base from the Rangers from 1967 to 1971...so its safe to assume that he had cards featuring him in a Rangers uniform in 68, 69, 70, 71, and 72....I want to collect one of each. This is going to be my new life long collecting project...there's a lot of no-name players that have played for the Rangers in the past and the cards should be fairly affordable for most of them. I think that collecting those cards on top of keeping up with my Teixeira, Young, Mench, Blalock, and other current Rangers should keep me plenty busy...or drive me to an early grave...we'll figure that out as time goes.
Anybody with some OLD Rangers cards...especially those in the 60's and 70's hit me with a PM. Thanks. This should be fun......or funny...or painful....one of the three.
EDIT:::: The cards from 61 to 71 will be the Washington Senators...not the Rangers....I appologize for that error....

Wow that is going to be tough but none the less very cool. Good luck I will keep an eye out for some. I only have current and a few 1990s of Rangers.

It'll be extremely funny, quite painful (all those no-namers), and quite fun, too. But.....you knew that.
No old Rangers here.....

Here's what I'm looking at in the way of the player I selected above....total high beckett value for those five years....$16.00
1969 Topps 27 Bernie Allen
1971 Topps 427 Bernie Allen
1968 Topps 548 Bernie Allen
1970 Topps 577 Bernie Allen
1972 Topps 644 Bernie Allen
I guess another good question would be this....does anyone know of any good trading sites or dealers that deal specifically with cards of this era?

I've gon A-B in beckett for the Senators 1961 to 1969 and have found that there were no cards printed for Marshall Bridges 1965 to 1966 and Jim Bronstad 1964 to 1965. Other than that I have located 54 cards for the other players with a total high beckett value of 605.25....about $11.76 per card. All of them are Topps. The highest priced one so far is a 1967 that has a Senator player and Rod Carew on it...it's a draft pick card.

Do you know what direction they took on players that didn't have cards made....I'm at a loss on those guys unless I contact the team and see if they have anything archived...old programs, team issues that aren't listed in Beckett, or something that would be available for purchase. I'm interested in knowing what other team collectors have done for the obscure players without a card issue.

If you don't mind cards in "used" condition you can try Mike Wheat Cards. I think he has up to 1978.

Suprisingly I've found a TON of these on sportslots....I've only looked up 20 players from the Senators of the 1960's and they have about 90 to 95 percent of what I need.....this might be a little easier than I thought.

I went to google and did a search for "Texas Rangers Baseball Team History" and found a link from there. I didn't dare do a search for just "Texas Rangers History" because that would have given me a ton of hits to the REAL Texas Rangers....not that I'm not interested in their history...but I've been to the Texas Rangers Museum in Waco numerous times.

Well....I got a list players set up for the 60's and 70's....now all I have to do is go through the Beckett Website and make a trade list of each card that the players had while active with the Senators/Rangers. This is going to be a LOOONGGG process of getting it started...but once I start trading/buying cards for the collection I plan on building a web site for the collection.

If everything works out as planned....I'll be ordering my first 35 to 50 Senators cards tomorrow or Friday from Sportlots......that will be a good start for now. Gives me some stuff to scan (if I can ever figure out why my computer quit reading my scanner) and gives me a start to the web site I'm going to put together for my collection.

Let's talk about this, because I think it's a manageable project and I would enjoy being a part of it.
One thing to consider is not doing the Senators but working just on the Rangers. That's the way I would do it, because I could care less about the team outside of playing in Texas.
Also, the website is a great idea, but it might be fun to even think about writing a book with stories about the players and seasons. It could be completely illustrated using baseball cards. The Rangers might be very interested in it. I wonder how the licensing would work using the card images, etc .
Anyhow, I've got some old Ranger cards sitting around. I'll check the list from the Rangers website and see what I have.

Well, I haven't visited this topic in quite some time. I have just about completed my Senators / Rangers check list from Beckett. So far, it's in the neighborhood of 56K cards.

Based on those staggering numbers I think I'm going to start out small. For the most part, other than the .99 cent EBAY pickups and the trades/sells I make here for AUTO's and GU, I'm going to start by posting a 100 card want list. As I get that narrowed down I'll add to the list. I'm also going to start concentrating on bulk lots of base to knock out huge chunks at a time.
Logically, after seeing the check list, if I get to 50% to 60% of the cards listed in Beckett I will consider it a success. However, with each new release that want list will continue to grow.
This is going to be a process. I'm trying to think of ways to keep it fun rather than looking at it as a job. I'm not going to agonize over the project, but the process of acquiring a "super" collection will definitely be a chore.

Just an idea, although by now I'm sure you have done so...
I started off using the 3.5 floppy disk to back up my file from the hard drive, then started using the flash/thumb drive when my files got too big (or in my case too many). One thing I have learned is backup, backup, backup. I would hate to think how much time it would take me to get everything put back into my Excel program.
Good luck with this project. Let me know if you need any Rangers from 70's thru now. I'm sure I've got them sitting in a box somewhere.

Could definitely use Rangers in from the 70's and probably quite a few from the 80's.
I did an inventory of GU and AUTO's tonight and was disappointed in what I found. I thought I had pretty close to 200 game used and I'm not even close. I'm at 142 game used and 139 autographs not including items I have coming from trades and ebay. My goal of 300 game used by the end of the year might be tough considering I'm not half way there yet.

Well, my check list is finished from 1961 to the end of 2008. Now I am in the process of checking off the cards I have compared to the ones I still need. I have been sorting like crazy the last couple of days and have the cards broken down by year from 1961 to 1999 and have updated my list from 1961 to 1990. I still have to sort and kick out all of my doubles from 1991 forward.
KHarmon
Jul 15 2009, 03:54 AM
A little update on where my collection is at. I have the check list compiled and completed. I've weeded out all of the doubles I have from 1961 to 1990.
I have also came to the realization that my current method of storing cards IS NOT working. As my collection continues to expand, the floor space in my storage area (bedroom closet) is rapidly shrinking. So this week I've invested in enough binders and 9 pocket pages for 4,500 cards.
The goal is to move all base and parallels to binders and all inserts, game used, and autos to the boxes that I'm currently storing them in. The sick and twisted part, I'm making individual sticky labels for each of the base and parallels and placing a label on each page of the binder so I'll know what goes where as the cards come in hand.
Once the weeding of doubles is completed, I will meticulously check off each card that I have from my check list. Once that is done I will put the complete want list on the web site that I have started.
Now that the check list (by far the hardest part of the process) is complete, my team collection is starting to seem a lot less like work and a lot more like fun. Once the doubles are sorted out things will definitely move along a lot more smoothly.
And I promise this.....I WILL NEVER LET MY COLLECTION GET THIS FAR OUT OF CONTROL AGAIN!!!!!! It has been a chore to get everything compiled into one spot and an entirely different chore to get them all sorted by year.
With that said, if my estimation is correct, I am somewhere close to 4,000 base and inserts, close to 180 game used and about the same amount of autos.
Out of a total check list of more than 56,000 cards there are some definite holes in my collection. That 56K number only accounts for Beckett listed Rangers and Senators cards through 2008. I have yet to start a check list for the 2009 releases.
Let the good times roll!!!!

Slowly but surely the cataloging process of finding out what I have and what I need to make my Rangers Team collection complete is coming together. To date I have cataloged all of the base cards I have of the Rangers from 1972 to 1997 and the results.......well they ain't so good. I am at a count of 1,907 different cards, and considering the huge check list I created with Beckett.....I ain't even close.
From 1992 to 1997 I probably have another hundred or so inserts so I am barely at 2,000 cards for those years. I haven't started checking off 1998 to 2008 yet but that ain't lookin so good either. I have two 1/2 full rows of a five thousand count box full for those years, so all told, I am in the neighborhood of 10% of the beckett listed cards from 1972 to 2008.
The only bright spot is that I should be closing in on 200 game used and 200 autographs in my collection but that's small consolation considering how much work there is to be done.
My new goal now is to DOUBLE the number of Rangers cards I have between now and the start of 2010...and that's just for the cards between 72-08. I won't put together an 09 check list until all of the products for this year have been released.
I am in need of a system. Some way to knock out huge chunks at a time to get the massive gaping holes in my collection filled. The harder to find Topps issues (Tiffany, Gold, Dessert Storm, Rockies Inagurral, Marlins inagural set) are going to be a bear. But I think one thing I'm going to do is fill in the Topps base sets first, then Donruss, Fleer, Score, Upper Deck, etc. AND THEN concentrate on knocking out the insert sets.
I have a feeling, that unless I can trade for them here, the folks at Sportslots and I are going to be getting well acquainted over the next little while. Of course, I will continue to pick up some game used and autograph stuff....I've proven to myself I can't get away from them.
So here are the goals for January 1, 2010.
Base and inserts.......be at 9,000 individual cards with no dupes.
Game used and autos......be at 500 individual cards with no dupes.
I want to get this thing done......I gotta be at 20% plus of the cards issued by the end of this year....and I'm seeking help here from the members of TCC to help reach that goal. Let's trade, lets negotiate, lets do something to make this happen!!!!!!!

I have TONS of base and insert cards. From the 80's to the present with a little gap from like 96-2000. But when I say tons, I mean tons. I have about 30 of the 900 count boxes plus a 5000 count box, plus a 3600 count box PLUS about 8 binders plus about 500-1000 more cards that need to be sorted. It's pretty crazy, I feel confident that I have some of those elusive Fred Manrique and Jeff Kunkel cards.

After starting the cataloging process way back in February, I finally finished today. My Rangers check list is complete from the 1961 to 1971 Washington Senators and more importantly, the Rangers from 1972 to 2008.
I'm kinda disappointed in the results of the cataloging.....I have a LOT of work to do to get my team collection to what I would consider in my mind to be respectable. To date I have 4,701 different Rangers cards from 1972 to 2009. I have about another 106 cards that are odd ball items that are not reflected in the Beckett price guides.
My next project will be, once all of the 2009 releases are released, is to compile the check list of 2009 rangers issues.
My goal now is to get to 10,000 cards before the end of the year and double that by the end of 2010. Needless to say I am going to be going after a ton of base trying to complete team sets for those years. I will continue to pick up game used and autos as I can, but honestly ladies and gents, I really want to get up to having about 100 completed team sets from various issues before I hit the GU and AUTO market heavily.
Once I get beyond this whole being laid off from my job thing, I will definitely be in the market for buying large team lots to help fill the gaping holes that are still in my collection.
