Apparently, this guy used to work for Topps and Upper Deck and has some insight on the hobby that at least I have rarely gotten to read about.

It falls in line with my ramblings the past few years!

The lack of content on the checklist adversely affects sales.

The lack of creative designs is another important factor for me that the blogger has not addressed.. Topps has become too Plain jane!

Less is more.. Again I wish Topps and UD would just cut back to

2 high ends UD premier, Topps Sterling, UD Exquisite
2 middle tier Bowman Sterling , Topps Finest, UD Ultimate
2 affordable Topps A&G, UD masterpiece

and 1 regular issue thats priced right like topps or UD brand!

Now this would be for each sport! Imagine if they loaded up their products in each area , cut production numbers in the high end and middle tier so that they become "sought after" what in turn those individual cards we pull would do ROI in the long term!

In my opinion there is just way too much of way too many products for a collector like myself to keep interested in!

I really like this blog and its given me some ideas too. Topps and Upper Deck are just loading boxes with autographs of people who do not play in the league anymore, draft picks who never make it, and pitchers from teams you have never even heard about before. I do agree that the products are watered down. Some base cards sell better than autos & Game Used cards. Why make Junk? I think they should strengthen the autograph and game used lists, make less of them, and that would definitely give more value to the hobby. Thanks for the post!

Very, very interesting Blog. I'm looking forward to his future postings. He has the perspective of not only a card manufacturer insider but also a hobbyist.

One of the themes that comes out very strongly from his writings is that there is too much product out there. Now with the downturn in the econcomy it will be interesting to see if the manufactuers recognize this, and if so, what they are going to eliminate. I also wonder if there will be some pricing restructuring.

I agree, they need to cut back on the gu and autos. It has caused me to start collecting more vintage, which has been a blessing in itself. I started building Topps baseball sets and I've had a blast. I don't buy much new product anymore except for the occasional retail buys, usually Topps or Bowman Chrome.

They should make less 1/1 and GU and autos. THey should get rid of those no namers GU or autos. Make it a bit harder to get a nice card then just spend $300 on premier.
