What buyers and sellers need to know about sports memorabilia involved in an economy-induced fire sale.

The Wallstreet Journal
JANUARY 13, 2009,
By BETH DECARBO

A seller lists his collection containing more than 20,000 items of sports memorabilia amassed over 21 years in a recent posting on online auction site eBay. The price: $7,499 -- or best offer. Atop the description is this:

"I NEED TO SELL!!! I need to sell this asap. This is an amazing set!! You can even re-list this; if you have the time to wait, you can sell this for 2Xs the amount. JUST MAKE AN OFFER!! I hate to say it, but I am desperate."

It's sad to think about being in a position to were all one sees in their collection is $ to pay off debt or keep food on the table. I'd do it too, obviously. But, I pray I never have to see such a day.

If you want to know how somebody feels about this topic, just ask OJ! I can't think of anyone who was as desperate as he was......

Interesting story. I think the true point is that if you ever have to sell it realize you are going to have to take a loss to move it. Right now not many people are buying with people out of jobs or the fear of it, the market for selling cards has decreased. I would venture to guess that if you asked Shop owners they would tell you sales are down as well, and therefore if they are making purchases they are at rock bottom prices even if it is good stuff, just based on how hard it is going to be to move it.

I also was wondering about the shipping container, but my guess is most of what is in it has significantly decreased from 1993. I would think there is probably some real junk in there. But who knows maybe there is something good. Cannot beleive this guy has not hired someone to go through the stuff and try to sell it, whether that be an auction house or just a private collector.

A lot of interesting points in that story. The most important one: Now's the time to buy, buy, buy. Buy like a maniac.
