What are your thoughts on purchasing ungraded vintage cards? Do you avoid them all together? Do you have no problem buying them at BV? Or do you expect a discount when you purchase and ungraded single?

It depends on how good the seller looks, if he describes them well, and if the scan/pic is good. If all 3 are good, I'd buy them if they're cheap.

Definately have to see a great scan/pic of them if on internet. It really depends on how badly I need the card.

Over the internet, definately a scan. In person then not a problem. I guess it just depends on who is selling as well.

Depends on how big the item is also. Common vintage in VG....not much to worry about. A Jim Thorpe Sports Kings in EX++++ ???? Is it trimmed, doctored... how much $$$ do I want to gamble with on that note????

Like Russ said. If it's a common card, I'll buy ungraded. But if it's a big name player $$. I'll save up and buy a graded card. But I would buy ungraded from a dealer with a good rep and good return policy.

I guess I would grade the modern ones if they were known to have counterfeits (Elway RC for example). Of course there are guys peeling these thick modern cards apart and building 'supposed' high # cards and juicing people (can't think of any examples right-off hand).

On a sidenote, Does anyone know of a one-stop place, book, publication dedicated to counterfeits made? I've been catching blurbs here and there since the eighties on which ones were targeted, but over the years have forgotten the particulars on some .....

I'd be interested in that info as well. I used to be able to ring off all the telltales on the big counterfeits back in the day, but alas, my memory is not what it was.

Ungraded is the best. Only way I can get a 1969 Gale Sayers for $5. That's just awesome right there.

I now have 2 graded vintage pre-war cards biggrin.gif My second card just came in Saturday. It's a 1935 Exhibit Four-on-one with Babe Ruth, Frank Hogan, Walter Berger and Ed Brandt. In PSA 4 Vg-Ex. The grade doesn't mean anything to me. I bought the card. Not the holder. biggrin.gif

All my cards are "ungraded" I have yet to actually purchase a graded card or to send one in to be graded. When I first became aware of "graded" cards back when they first started grading cards, I thought "what have they done to the hobby now". I still kind of think that. I think the difference between a graded card and an ungraded card is sort of like having your own comfortable "Archie Bunker" chair and then going to the Smithsonian and seeing the exact same type/style chair made famous by "All In The Family" under glass behind a sophisticated security system. A personal collection is something to not just treasure but to view admire and ocassionally "handle" (of course you keep your PC cards at the very least in pennysleeves). They have a special feel to them (even though you might not technically "feel" them anymore) where as a card in a slab of plastic seems to be "off-limits" and "unobtainable". That's just my 2cents worth.

Along that same line I agree. Grading just comes in handy to me from a authentic item/un-doctored standpoint when the high values come into play. I could give a rip if my card is a 4 or 5 or whatever. But what about that guy that has a 'supposed' T206 Wagner card. He said he has had antique paper experts give COA's on it. But he won't take it to PSA because he can't be present when the deed is done???? From a economic standpoint everyone knows he could get top $$$ for it if it was slabbed by PSA. Would anyone want to gamble 20-100 K on a Wagner deal?
