Can anyone tell me why there are 5-10 2006 Rookies, whose RC's are consistantly valued higher than Hanley Ramirez and Justin Verlander, who were voted the best rookie in each league respectively?

I'm currently looking at '06 Ud Ovation but have seen this as a trend in all sets:

Ramirez bv 10.00
Verlander bv 12.00

Zimmerman bv 20.00
Papelbon bv 15.00
Hong-Chih Kuo bv 15.00
Liriano bv 15.00
Weaver bv 15.00
Billingsley bv 15.00
Melky Cabrera bv 15.00
Johjima bv 15.00

Does anyone else think this is strange? Can someone explain this phenomena to me?

Sean

That's just the way collecting is.
Players cards aren't always valued by how good they are.
They are valued the same way most things are, supply and demand.
Supply would be the short print stuff, and demand is just who do collectors want the most.
Usually those players that are collected most are stars, but a lot of stars go without being giving the value that some collectors would think just because they aren't as popular.
I'm a Twins fan, I know how this works. But i like it because it is easier for me to collect Twins cards, they are cheaper.

When you reach hobby enlightenment . . . value is a state of mind
Ummmmmmm

I am ONLY interested in Twins stuff. Any Twins, current or former. I like Autos, GU, RC, refractors, parallels, or inserts. I've even been known to trade some base lots. But they MUST be in Twins uniforms.

So, basically, you're telling me that Ryan Zimmerman is the most demanded rookie in all of baseball? His rc's seem to be the highest valued in every set. In that case, can someone explain what all the hype around him is? How high of a draft pick was he?

I know I've only been on the site for less than a month, but I don't know if I've seen anyone on here who collects Ryan Zimmerman. Where does Beckett get their hobby info for generating their prices? I know I didn't get asked to fill out a survey or take a poll.

I know people that collect Ryna Zimmerman.
Plus, this forum is a smal sample of the global hobby industry. Zimmerman was a popular rookie and his cards are worth more.
Remember the movie with Marky mark, Invincible I think it was. Where he plays the guy who tries out for the Eagles and makes the team.
That guy's real life RC, The only card ever made of him, jumped from less than a dime to $25 after that movie came out.

I agree with you, and I'm sure there are people who DO collect Ryan Zimmerman. I guess I'm just failing to see why people would demand Zimmerman cards over the National League ROY to the extent that Zimmerman's cards are twice the value of Ramirez's. Maybe it's just a lack of demand for Ramirez, but once again, I'm failing to understand why there is very little demand for RC's from the best rookie in the NL.

It also has to do with the team.
Sorry to tell ya, but the Marlins aren't really popular around the league, Neither are the Twins. . .
That's why Yankees players get more value sometimes. . . and Boston.
There are more people who collect those teams. The Nationals are somewhat popular too.

Maybe this is why I'm having trouble grasping this concept. Maybe it IS a regional thing having to do with the team, and it's fan base. I agree that the Marlins aren't the most popular, and they have a terrible fan base. Just look at the attendance problems they've been having. The Nationals on the other hand, may be popular to the East and to the West. And as a "new team," they should have a "fresh, fairly energized, baseball-starved" fan base, which probably helps with their popularity. But here in the Midwest, the consensus is that they're still the Expos, and that they're still pretty much the laughing stock of the NL, which also happens to be my personal opinion(I'm not trying to ruffle the feathers of any Nationals fans!), and as a result, could be why I'm finding it so hard to believe that Zimm. rc's are worth so much more than Ramirez.

Zim was a popular candidate for ROY - just behind Ramirez, I believe.

Because Zim was drafted in 2005, made his MLB debut, and dominated. Then this year, he was probably the top rookie in my opinion. He is gonna be a stud.

ffman-
True, Zimmerman was a VERY close second in the ROY voting and is an excellent player. However, he was still second, and therefore, I don't think him being a close runner-up justifies his cards being twice as valuable as the guy's cards that beat him.

Hallsgator-
You say Zimmerman was probably the best rookie in your opinion, which is completely up to you. But if this is how Beckett is determing bv's, by collectors' opinions, wants, and demands (which would make sense to me), does anyone actually know how Beckett determines collectors' demands for a certain card? Do they offer surveys or polls? Do they monitor sales or trades of specific cards? If so, which transactions are they monitoring?

Usually they monitor sales for higher end cards and for hot cards and players, such as RCs. But the sometimes make up prices.

The secret to of understanding everything is realizing that Beckett monthly is not the Bible. It doesn't not tell you the absolute value of things, just what they think. The value is whatever someone is willing to pay.

It is part regional, who is willing to pay the asking price (see ebay for this), how good the player is no matter what round or # pick he was in the year he was drafted, how well he has played since the draft, how quickly he went thru the minors and once he got to the majors. Baseball is all about development. Look at Melky Cabrera of the Yankees. They brought him up in 04 or 05 and threw him to the wolves in a series in Boston and played terrible in center field. Sent him back down to the minors. This past year he played extremely well playing almost everyday. It all depends on the player and how hard they work not just in the minors but once they get to the majors and what they do during the off season. The best example of that is DEREK JETER. One word describes him: CONSISTENTCY. Day in, Day out plays for team, not individual. And he started out terrible in the minors but once again depends on the player and how much they want to make it to and in the majors.
