So apparently Thome was "traded" to the Indians today, but I don't understand it. First of all, I know the MLB trade deadline has already passed. Secondly, it's my understanding that Thome was placed on waivers, then claimed by Cleveland. If this is the case, why does Minnesota get compensation?

I understand how waivers work in the NFL, but I've never seen a team get compensation in the form of a trade from the team that claimed the player they waived. Can someone explain this to me?

When a player is placed on waivers, the team who wins the claim has 24 hours to reach a trade agreement with the waiver placing team. If no agreement is reached in said 24 hours, then that waiver is retracted and the player remains with team (if not designated for assignment).

It is my understanding that this was a move to help Thome try to get to the playoffs one more time as this is most likely his last year. If a team like, oh say the Marlins, would have won the claim the Twins would not have traded him. With the Indians Thome has a realistic shot to make the playoffs.

Class move by Minnesota.

I made a mistake in my first post, apparently the teams have 48 hours to work out a deal, not 24... apologies...

That explains a lot, Michael. Thank you very much for the explanation. I did a little reading on it in other news articles about waivers after I saw your post, and it makes a bit more sense now. I'm just used to NFL waiver rules in which the claiming team does not give up any compensation in the form of a trade. They simply acquire the player.
