Honestly if I were someone who just stumbled upon this site now looking for a card forum I would take one look at the home page and click away.

"Baseball players will take anything. If you had a pill that would guarantee a pitcher 20 wins but might take five years off his life, he'd take it" MLB pitcher Jim Bouton about drug use in the Major Leagues... quoted in 1969.

I vow to no longer purchase any product that features sticker autographs...
If your user name is this color I'm afraid I'll have to pass on any proposed transactions at this time.

Yeah, I remember the outdated state of the homepage being a big topic of discussion in the past. I also remember several team members offering up some very good suggestions that went so far as adding sports tickers and updating the overall look of the site. I don't remember too much after that though.....don't know where the discussion went from there.

As far as active membership declining, we set a new high for members on at one time just 2 months ago. We still have over 20,000 registered members. I would think that most any company would like access to this large of a community. Most likely, we just need to ask.

QUOTE(pspstatus @ Apr 10 2011, 09:22 PM)
I know I'm a bit late to this party. I was debating on whether I wanted to write this or not. My decision is made.

I love this website. As far as card forums go this is definitely my home base. But like so many others have said the active membership and trades on this site have declined sharply. Many valid reasons have been stated as to why this may be; the economy, poor products from card companies, lacking enough Bob, etc. I agree with all these things. I also agree that the members of this site are amongst the best in the hobby and that NO other site provides a sense of community like TCC does. Honestly though I think we are ignoring some pretty obvious problems unique to this website.

I don't mean to get down on anyone. In fact I don't even know who handles these things. I think the CZT do a great job. I think the members of all TCC teams do a great job, are very helpful, and are quite friendly. I know they do a lot and are donating their time to this website. Life always comes first and I appreciate the effort on their part. That being said I'm curious as to why the hobby headlines listed on the home page are still representing 2006? Why are the featured product reviews representing 2009? The Home page here is set up better than any other site in my opinion but it needs a serious updating. Why are the featured box breaks in the box break forum all from 2008? Why is the main featured video the same one that has been there for almost 2 years? Why is it that in the links under community there is a Trivia link? I'm still wondering if that guy from Oregon got his prize from the 2005 contest. Why is it that there are absolutely NO affiliations with any card companies? Why are there no ads anywhere for this site? I'd be happy to contribute a few bucks to spread the word.

The plain truth is that this site isn't being kept up. Honestly if I were someone who just stumbled upon this site now looking for a card forum I would take one look at the home page and click away. Seeing those 06 headlines would give me the impression that this site is not properly maintained. Prospective members may look at these things and pass on joining because they don't think it will be worth it. Maybe a company ad exec wants to sponsor TCC but decides not to for the same reasons. Maybe a person has just joined and everyday they check the box breaks and the same video is featured. After a month maybe they start to get annoyed by it. Other websites have videos featuring current products. Maybe they decide to spend their time there instead.

Now I don't know if this is all things Bob would take care of or if someone else can do it but I strongly think that things like this need to be addressed. Until they are I suspect this site will continue to decline in active membership.
*

I have brought this up before in the suggestion box!

I always try to never judge a book by its cover, but first impressions mean a lot! A lot of people would look at the home page and judge the site just off of that! And never give it a shot here. And never know what they are missing.

Also unlocking the members that were trying to get accounts when Bob was the only one who could let them in. I know that some of them have been let in, but im sure there are still a lot of people that would come if they were let in? But thats behind the scenes stuff and I don't know how that works, so I could be wrong?

I personally just joined another site. This is still my home, I just went there as a new place to search for Edgerrins I need and to maybe move some stuff that people here don't want. TCC I can say is a lot easier IMO to navigate and find your way around. Other sites im on are kinda just to scattered.

I will always like it here the best, but there are things that need to be updated or fixed. But over all its not bad here, just get some more people and we will be fine! Also one thing to think about, if we get to many people you start to lose that kinda small town family type atmosphere! Where everone knows your name and about you. And to many people to keep your eyes open for stuff for people. Just that comfort feeling. wink.gif

Does anyone know what we can do about some of these things? I don't want to just criticize without offering to be part of the solution. I would be happy to do anything I am capable of doing to help, whether it be time, ideas, or even a little dough. And I'd be willing to bet that I am not the only one who wouldn't mind helping. This is a special community and a hobby home for many including myself. In fact I believe that TCC is the best trading card forum on the web. The best format and layout, the best members, the most generous mods and members, and the best balance. I really just want to see TCC live up to its potential.

I collect rookie cards. Please check my list to see if you have anything I need.

I am looking for Don Mattingly cards that I don't have. Base, Inserts, Patches, maybe GU or Autos.

Aaron and everyone else,

These things are being worked on, albeit at a glacial pace.

The volunteers involved have given freely of their time
and knowledge. I'd especially like to thank Josh (jwman)
and Mike Lindegard for their work on the Front Page
update. It is getting done but never at the pace that one
wishes.

We have several other original ideas and themes that are
being hashed out or either cemented.

We appreciate your commentary and critiques. Your
concerns are our concerns, mark my words.

We will get these things done.

Echo what Richard said. It might not be going as fast as everyone would like change/update etc is in the wind and hopefully the community will like what there is to offer in the future.

Everyone is spending their time as it is available to affect some nice things here at TCC. Hopefully everyone likes it when it is unveiled...

Thanks for all the comments folks. Great stuff and glad to see there community is truly concerned about our family here at TCC.

We have also been validating new accounts.

The process is very time-consuming and thorough.
We simply have to make sure that the members
are safe from bots, malware and the occasional
corrupt trader.

There is a great deal going on in the background
that rarely, if ever, sees the light of day.

I'd like to thank everyone on the CZT, the Membership
Team, the Contents and Graphics Team and the
Programming Team for their work and dedication to
the members, the site and most importantly the
hobby.

Thanks go out to every member as well, for your
continued interest and contributions. This site
encompasses (at least, to me) everything that
is good and pure about this hobby.

We owe that to each and every contributing member.

OK so after reading most here i agree it has slowed some. I would love to be able to make trades like i did when i started but it seems few and far between now adays. I try and try but people mainly want the best stuff.
Things are what we make them. I am mainly on 3 sites 2 others from here. I came here as part of a Group break 3 years ago when beckett started their crud.
Also now with beckett now charging for trading you may see more new guys here soon.
I still love the hobby at times it gets me down but still kickin.

Welcome back.

As for Bob, I would just say "life" is what happened to Bob. Work and family are taking most of his time, otherwise I think he would be here, but only he can state the facts, I can only speculate.

Just read every post in this thread..

I "plug" TCC in every description of every video I have on youtube, link and incouraging words.. even on my channel I've got a link.. granted, I've been slacking on my vids.. but the last one got me going again... I'm thinking of adding TCC to all my video names as well..

Anywho, I've had a thought.. might be dumb, might be brilliant.. but what about "exclusively on TCC"? Like for example, don't mean to be all egomaniac here but, how about "featuring" special collections here? Like my Ultimate fascination. I can think of a lot of peoples cool collection, I just don't know if they're posted anywhere else? (SPx /264, A&G, Barry Sanders, Grange/Thorpe/Nagurski and others.. but like I said, I don't know how many of you guys have similar threads and topics on other sites?)

The boxbreakers group is another great "exclusive" thing to promote. Plug the great pulls in vids on youtube and such. Try to draw people in with exciting special things, they have to come here to see/get/experience..

Just a thought.. a thought I hope makes sense laugh.gif If it didn't I meant well tongue.gif

Main Focus: Alex Brink, ANDREW LUCK, Peyton Manning, Thomas Robinson and Ultimate Collection.

Also Collecting: Beanie Wells, Bo Jackson, John Tavares, Kyle Turley, LeBron James, Ryan Nassib, Vitor Belfort, Star Trek & Wrestling.

I was thinking that business is slowing too. This is evident in the box break section. Usually people are tripping over each other to host breaks, but as of right now...there is only one live box break in FB? Crazy!

Yes I think the industry has slowed, less disposable income when you are paying $3.50 and up for a gallon of gasoline, beyond that postage rates are now a minimum of $1.71 for one ounce bubble mailer, so the economy is kicking the hobby's hinny. Top that off with the points made by Steve (aceecards) in his topic and you see why the hobby is dying. Either that or everyone is spending their money at the casinos, since they have popped up everywhere (pretty bad when your local government has to promote legalized gambling as a way of getting revenues). Actually, I have stopped buying football mainly for the reasons Steve indicated, as well as just opening too much and not ever finishing anything.

I been very happy here I think, I was at SCF since 2008, and coming here more and more!
I been thinking about Setting up a table at my local Flea market with my cards and promoting TCC's site! And hiiting the Card shows in my area, I could set up signs with the site name and info to the site! I been trying to get family members to come join on the forum on Face Book, and how cool the Box Breaks are!
Just need to get more members on here, and plan to promote the site at my Table on the weekends at the Flea market, which will happen soon, Whats everyone's thoughts on this?
There are other card dealers there I can get to join in here, I talk to them from time to time, and dont even know about this site, and they have some pretty cool stuff that they can bring to the site!
I been thinking about doing this for awhile, Buy, selling and trading in person for TCC! Just an Idea, but it works for SFC as they promote theyre site at card shows!
Thoughts anyone? I wouldnt mind being the sites Off Site Relations Manager!
