I can't help much on the internet question; I have to move my cable internet modem from room-to-room depending on whether I want to play Xbox 360 or get one the computer.
If the PS3 is anything like the Xbox 360, you will not need an HDTV to play. When I first got my 360 I had a regular SDTV, and the picture looked fine. It does look somewhat better on an HDTV (had to get one after my old TV croaked), but the picture you will get with a regular TV is pretty good.

As far as the tv goes, I have my PS3 connected to a crappy old tv, as well. It's not as nice as the new HDTVs but it works. On the internet side of things, there are a few variables there that need to be considered. The first is the actual connection speed. Verizon (as with most ISPs) have different plans for different speeds. If it's one of the lower speeds, you may have some trouble playing games (especially FPSs) online. Latency kills gamers. You also have to look at the connection speed between the router and PS3. If they're far away, it can definitely cause some lag there too. Also, I believe the wireless cards in the PS3s are 802.11g, so you'll want to make sure your router is 802.11 g for best connection. You can get 802.11n, but it will still only go at g speed. Just make sure you don't get 802.11b. Of course, if it's possible to get a cabled connection, that would be best. If you don't use your computer for gaming or streaming movies over the internet (Netflix, etc), I'd say get a wireless router, put it in the room with the PS3, and use a cabled connection from the router to the PS3 and just let the computer be wireless. edit: Just realized how old this thread is. Sorry.
