Collector Zone _ Box Breaks _ TCC Wacky Waxbustin' Weekend!

TCC WACKY WAXBUSTIN' WEEKEND!

The first ever Wacky Waxbustin' Weekend is coming this spring! clapping.gif

What is it, you might ask? The fundamental right of mankind is freedom, and so too for trading cards! Cards the world over are imprisoned in waxy, paper, or foil wrappers and then hidden away in cardboard boxes sealed in shrink wrap! Who knows how long some of these innocent cards have been locked away, having not once seen the light of day since their birth during mass production. Our mission? Bust 'em out! ph34r.gif

Want to participate? Participation is easy. Buy a box of cards - any box - and bust it open on April 3 and 4, 2010. Once opened, you must share the contents of the box with the rest of the Waxbustin' Weekenders in a special thread dedicated to the event. Tell us where you got it, why, and what you think about it. Share with us and we share with you! We're in this together... For the cardboard! And freedom!

Can you do this live? It might be easier you keep your box breaks contained within a single post, so as not to confuse the other people who may be busting boxes at that time. However, there may be a defined schedule once the event nears so that we can dedicate a certain time period to LIVE breaks. Stay tuned!

What about video breaks? Not a problem. Record it and post it with a summary! In fact, it might be fun to see some people on camera who haven't been before! It's up to you!

How many boxes can you bust? As many as your heart desires and your wallet can afford. We aren't going to limit people on what they can open, nor how much. You wanna open a blaster box? Go for it. A case of Heritage? More power to ya. Some Exquisite? Bring it on. boxing.gif

Is this just sports? New stuff? You can open a box of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from 1990, you can open 2010 Topps Baseball, or even a box of Magic: The Gathering cards. Hobby, retail, both. Sports, non-sports, gaming, all of the above. There's only one rule: Sealed box of packs of cards.

Do you have to announce what you're opening before the weekend or can it be a surprise? Up to you! biggrin.gif

Please remember! This is not a competition, it's about having fun!

My sincere hope is that many of you will participate and that all of you will support our first Wacky Waxbustin' Weekend! A success will bring more events such as this to Trading Card Central!

Comments, questions? This is the place to ask. smile.gif

I have a question: I like the wax wombat have a very hard time keeping unopened wax (boxes) in my house without getting the urge to just rip into them, so how do I hold out this long? I am usually lucky if a box sits in my house for a week, let alone a day. Any help would be appreciated.

What were those things used back in the middle ages for women ?? Chastity belt??

Wait until the day of to buy?

Those are probably all valid suggestions

I'm gonna wait until the week before to buy it. I can wait a few days. Usually. I hope.

I found that if you lock it away in your closet, it's an out of sight, out of mind kind of deal. It's much easier when it's put away than when it's out sitting in front of you... looking at you, staring at you, daring you to open it... biggrin.gif

Posted by: Kmart6nets Jan 12 2010, 09:18 AM

Also, I will be buying a box of basketball for this as well... What and when? Not sure yet biggrin.gif

Posted by: captkirk42 Jan 12 2010, 03:26 PM

Gee what a wonderful idea in honor of my birthday (the 4th). biggrin.gif

I'm not sure if I'll have something around to bust or not. If I remember to I'll try to have something. Maybe even ustream it.

If a stray box or two finds it way to me for my Birthday by way of a generous TCC member I wouldn't object. tongue.gif

Sounds fun to me and April 4th is also my birthday!!

I hope that will bring me Mojooo!

Posted by: sahetu Jan 12 2010, 08:52 PM

I think we might have to make an exception or two here...

Things like Just Minors helmets, mini bats, and 8x10s include packs and/or cards. I think we should allow these.

Same with other memorabilia (balls, helmets) from Tristar Hidden Treasures.

Also, multi-pack boxes (boxes of 10 or whatever random packs from different manufacturers) should be allowed as well.

Some interesting news:

Folks, if you would like to do something unique... On or a day before the 3rd of April, you can order a box (or boxes) from Chris at Cards Infinity and he'll open them and plug Wacky Waxbustin' Weekend on Youtube (just be sure to tell him what it's for and provide a link to the box busting thread)! Find Chris at http://www.cardsinfinity.com and http://www.youtube.com/user/chri5784

I sent him and email and he's totally willing to help us out with video breaks. A nice side effect is that it might bring TCC some more members, as he has a large following.

Well, the idea was for it to be boxes (of any kind), but hey.. If you only got some packs, let 'em rip... No one is gonna stop ya!

Posted by: benshobbies Jan 21 2010, 07:46 AM

I might have a case of 2010 Topps Jumbo in for then, maybe I can save a few boxes for wacky waxbusting weekend. Thanks for the idea!

Posted by: Tromni Jan 21 2010, 10:09 AM

I will definitely be busting something. Probably some "greatest hits" from my collecting career, past sets that I absolutely loved but never got to bust in box form.

Posted by: chopinalex Jan 22 2010, 07:55 PM

I think ill bust a case of 1990 proset and post all the hits on here.

Posted by: yankeesjetsfan Jan 22 2010, 08:56 PM

Income taxes should be here well before then. I may actually bust 2 boxes biggrin.gif

Posted by: sahetu Jan 23 2010, 12:21 PM

Okie dokie, ladies and gentleducks...

I tried to get Dave and Adam's to sponsor this event. As I am in good with those guys, I thought I could get them to toss out a coupon, or something. Alas, no. However! They do have free shipping on Thursdays on orders $50 or more, and there is a $5 coupon in the current Beckett! I encourage you to use these guys, as I love them to death.

That said! Michael and I are still working on finding some sponsors!

Posted by: tj2373 Jan 23 2010, 01:21 PM

I just placed an order from Dave and Adam's for the following 3 boxes:

2010 Topps Heritage Baseball
2009 Topps Heritage Baseball High Number Series
2008 Topps Heritage Baseball High Number Series
Free Gift of 12 Packs Upper Deck Marvel Masterpieces
Free shipping and $5.00 off order using coupon from Beckett

Will probably order more over the next couple of paydays when I'm able to.

Can't wait to bust open the 2010 Topps Heritage!

Posted by: facemuscles Jan 26 2010, 02:31 PM

I'm going to work something out to bust some product. I haven't busted a box in about a year and I'm long overdue. I'll be saving all feb and march for it and hopefully I'll get enough cash to make it interesting. Thanks for the idea, Andrew. cool.gif

The debate in my head is on. I cannot decide what to open. I think a box or two or three for sure. Just the sport or product is slipping my mind. I tell myself NT, then I think Limited is fun, then again I like UD Heroes, then of course I like Contenders and then there is SPA and then there is Bowman... get my drift. I cannot decide laugh.gif Oh but I will decide in time though.. Thats for sure...

Posted by: sahetu Feb 9 2010, 11:56 AM

I think my best bet is opening products that will give my collection a huge shot in the arm. I will have to do bang-for-buck as well... I don't wanna drop a lotta dough, y'know? I also want to have one freaky box to share... Something totally off the wall.

Posted by: dd316 Feb 9 2010, 12:12 PM

I have two boxes of Galaxy 5 coming in, but I don't think I'll be able to wait til April to open them!

Posted by: captkirk42 Feb 9 2010, 06:30 PM

I've got a box of Hockey 91-92 Upper Deck, and a Football 1990 Fleer. Both I had gotten a few years back on Ebay, and never got around to breaking them.

I have a full set of the 1990 Football Fleer, plus the All-Pros from that set. I had gotten this box before I had ebayed for the AllPro set and base sets. I do need the update set though.

For the Hockey I'll keep the Caps I get from that box and a few others, but most will probably be for trade.

I'll try to get some other stuff probably some blasters from Target.

Plus any birthday boxes/packs I end up getting tongue.gif

Just bought a box I'll be breaking for the WWW. Trying something different for the event - non-sports! I'll have to stash it out of sight so I don't give into temptation and bust it early.

Posted by: tj2373 Feb 25 2010, 01:38 PM

Just ordered this box from www.tisinc99.com:

2010 Topps Heritage $66.99 on sale + $13.95 for shipping USPS.

They have a sale going on most of their boxes. Check them out.

Posted by: Tromni Mar 2 2010, 03:14 PM

And my first box is being delivered today. I dropped a gigantic $20 on a box of 1999 Hologrfx football from Upper Deck. Don't ask me why, but I was desperate to get my hands on the super shiny base cards from that set.

But hey, 1 box per case contains an autograph from a checklist including Steve Young, Troy Aikman, Payton Manning, Brett Favre . . . Tim Couch, Akili Smith, Cade McNown, etc. And for all I know, the good ones are all redemptions!

Should be a fun start to the day. Now to search out a nice older box in every other product category. 1993 Studio baseball and Marvel Universe IV are high on the list.

My wife told me my two Galaxy 5 boxes are at home waiting for me, there's now WAY I can wait until April to open them - I've been itching!!!

Maybe if my comp box from Topps arrives by then I'll hold onto it, but it looks like I may have to grab something else. I'm doing a show in Baltimore on 3/21, so I'll try to pick up something there (and also try to keep the wrapper on!).

Posted by: ffman Mar 2 2010, 05:42 PM

Still going with an 06 NT and SWG5...but undecided on box #3. Just opened the WORST box of Topps Unique in the entire production run (Browns dual plain GU /79, Urlacher patch /50 (maroon?), and a James Davis AU /1000 (seriously, 1000!). If I got another box of that it would HAVE to be better!

Other thoughts?

That might work, you also might want to have a "master" WWW thread where folks can post links to their breaks be them old school or via videos.

So far I just have my old school boxes from early 90s, been thinking of doing Ustream vids for them. I still have time to get a current blaster or two hmmm decisions.

Just ordered this box from www.tisinc99.com:

2010 Topps Heritage $66.99 on sale + $13.95 for shipping USPS.

They have a sale going on most of their boxes.  Check them out.

This box arrived today via UPS. Can't wait to open them.

Me too!

Alright, a blowout special allowed me to secure a second box for the weekend: Rittenhouse's Quotable Deep Space 9, by far my favorite star trek series. 1 auto and 2 costume cards

Other than searching out 1993 Studio baseball, i think that'll complete the weekend for me. All breaks old school too, video will just be too much hassle.

Posted by: faulkrules Mar 17 2010, 07:22 PM

My list is finalized!

09 Classics - Lots of cuts in there!
09 SW Galaxy 5 - Hoping for a Katie Cook sketch!!
06 NT - 7 new additions to my PC!!!

1995/96 Slapshot OHL Hockey hobby box.
2002-03 Press Pass Basketball hobby box.

And a LOT of random packs - sport, non-sport, old, new, etc. smile.gif

What a coincidence this event is around the time we get our tax refunds in the mail.

I don't know if I will bust anything or not.

My birthday is the week after next and I will be opening one or two hobby boxes then, so I might not bust any blasters.

Posted by: tj2373 Mar 30 2010, 07:37 PM

I'm only going to be able to participate on Saturday, having family over for Easter Sunday. Saw the Base Exchange got some 2010 Topps Heritage in stock, may purchase a few more packs.

Posted by: 5toosweet Mar 30 2010, 09:00 PM

I will be bustin a box of 07 Prospects Plus. I will do this break probably late on Sunday night live on ustream. I will post pics along with a link to the video after Im done.

I think we're going to need a brand new thread for the box busting itself, what say you all?

I've got some old school stuff ready that I mentioned plus some Non-Sport stuff I just got. I"m tempted to open the Non-Sport stuff now, the other stuff has been sitting around for a while. I was going to go into detail of where I got the stuff but I'll wait for that when I bust the stuff. Anyway my stuff.

1990 Fleer Football
1991 Pro-Set Football

1991-92 Upper Deck Hockey

Non-Sport:
Inkworks Catwoman Movie
Inkworks Family Guy Episode IV A New Hope (Star Wars Parody "Blue Harvest")

Posted by: mikeadd10 Apr 1 2010, 12:08 AM

I hope I can find a LCS that still carries some 08/09 Legends Masterpieces HKY if not I may just have to pick up a blaster at Wal-Mart...

Posted by: cbware88 Apr 1 2010, 01:39 AM

I'm in.........I've got FIVE boxes so far!!!!!

are we doing them individually, in a special thread, and/or by sport????

Posted by: Tromni Apr 1 2010, 09:13 AM

Agreed that we need a special thread.

I've got 3 boxes:

1993 Studio Baseball (aka, the best base set ever)
1999 HoloGrFx Football (so shiny you better wear sunglasses)
Rittenhouse Quotable Deep Space Nine (1 auto and 2 costume cards for $40)

Posted by: sahetu Apr 1 2010, 09:14 AM

Well, I don't have the required superpowers to make another stickied thread..

Posted by: gwynn_fan Apr 1 2010, 10:46 AM

Hi
Well, if I get some Paypal payments that are due, I will try and get a box of 2010 Finest, since I have had the "bad luck" to get the Finest Rookie Redemption #10 in 08 and 09 (Oh, yeah Joba Auto in 08 and Hanson Auto in 09)
If not, I have a retail box of 1999 Ovation that's been sitting around since 1999 biggrin.gif I haven't busted it, since I pulled a Chipper Auto out of the box I did open. (long gone) I do have a bunch of 1999 ovation cards and inserts.

I'm in! I got a box of 2010 Topps Series 1 and a blaster of 09-10 Champs Hockey.

Posted by: Tromni Apr 2 2010, 10:43 AM

Thankfully Andy, I do have the required super-powers

Please post all breaks in the official pinned thread in the box breaks forum. I will un-pin this planning thread now.

Posted by: 2006BowmanDraftFan Apr 2 2010, 10:14 PM

I have picked up a box of 2002-03 Donruss Estrallas baseball to bust.

Have several blaster boxes ready to go. Thank you Kmart!!!!

And I won $100 on a scratch ticket today, so off to the Crack store tomorrow to pick out something. If he has 2009 Bowman Jumbo at $59, that is what I am getting. If not, Finest seems to be the way to go.
