Topps revs up the 2012 baseball card season beginning today with its first high-end product of the year. Topps Tribute was scheduled to hit store shelves, promising a variety of autographs from legendary players it has under contract as well as a collection of current stars.

The typically popular Heritage issue will take the stage less than a week later. While each product is aimed at a different type of collector, many will chase both and the company isn’t giving much time for Tribute to get legs before the next big product release. Collectors may initially struggle to come up with the cash to pay for a box or two of each.

2012 Topps Tribute boxes, which have been selling online for $275 and up, pack a potentially potent punch. There will be six packs per box and five cards per pack and Topps has promised three autographs numbered to 99 or less—on card—per box along with the usual parallel versions and a trio of relic cards as well.
