These school shootings are absolutely sickening. What a tragedy. Something needs to be done, too many innocent children are dying.

I wasnt refering to democrats in general.  I dont pick sides politically.  I wa reffering to the current harbage that the maids at the white house needs to throw out.  I have had enough of this presidency.  The entire lot in offie right now has done more harm to this country than the last 3 presidential staffs combineed.    Which is some feat

I will definitely agree with you that Washington right now (House, Senate, White House, even the Supreme Court) has just done an absolutely horrendous job in the last 15 years or so. I definitely am with you on that one and unfortunately it just doesn't seem to be getting any better.

QUOTE(aceecards @ Oct 28 2014, 08:10 PM)
what?

man you are absolutely clueless.

I suggest economics 101
*

How doesn't that make sense to you? Businesses only thrive in countries with developed economies where wealth is spread out. You don't see Apple trying to sell phones in some of the poorer countries in Latin America and Africa. Why? Because there aren't enough consumers. Sure you have the elite in those countries, but there aren't enough of them to buy enough phones for it to be worth Apple's while.

Obviously America is in a much different state than poorer Latin American and African countries but the concept still relates. The middle class is shrinking and the lower class is getting larger. The middle class drives the economy, that's where the most "consumers" come from in a thriving economy. Less consumers lead to less money in the economy which leads to less businesses succeeding which leads to less jobs which leads to less consumers. It's a circle THAT IS Economics 101. Now we may disagree on where the circle "starts" and that's fine, we can have a discussion about it. But come on, comments like that are so unnecessary and not even relevant to a discussion. I know discussions have been hard to come by on this site in recent years but can we atleast be respectful to each other? Good grief.

QUOTE(sasports @ Oct 28 2014, 02:11 PM)
Apparently you felt it was worth addressing or you wouldn't have wink.gif
And yes, the comment she made wasn't shown in its entirety, however, the fact still remains that no matter how much you raise the minimum wage, that DOSENT create jobs.  Yes, more lazy people might get off their butts and get a job which helps the unemployment rate, but the jobs were already there.

I here people complaining about needing a job on a daily basis, but when I offer them one, the say no because there isn't enough money or they don't want to do this kind of work.    Lack of jobs isn't the problem,  lazy people getting paid unemployment and refusing to take whats available is.
When I was jobless and homeless, I never turned down a job, no matter how small it was or how little I was getting paid.  But yet there are families that would rather sit and take handouts than accept a job.

Hillary Clinton already ran this country for 8 years,  time to get some new blood.    Have you listened to any of her speeches?
*

I will definitely agree that the minimum wage isn't the biggest problem right now. I think we need a president willing to take a stronger stance on big business and Wall Street (something President Obama hasn't done and something Hillary Clinton definitely won't do).

But regardless, your initial comment was inane and is honestly an example of why their is so much gridlock in politics these days. Painting any group of people or any political party as anything (especially so extreme) is detrimental to society and everything democracy stands for. How can compromise be had when you paint your "partner across the aisle" in such an extreme way. I don't mean to call you specifically out for it, because unfortunately it's something that's rampant in society these days. Politics have become to much of a sport and ofcourse the media also carries plenty of responsibility for it as well.

SO.

what came first the chicken or the egg?

since you apparently have the answer?

Let me tell you about supply and demand

One doesnt exist without the other.

Without a creation we have no world.

Conceptual if i produce an idea , a widget , we will call it, and someone buys it, and then the word spreads and I need help to create more widgets , so i hire someone to help me and pay him 1% of what a widget cost, Did not a BUSINESS create a JOB?

AND THEREby my friend why Hilary is a complete looney toon for thinking anything different! You actually answered your own question in explaining to Zimbow why he has gainful employment!
Or..

we can analyze any other conceptual idea in a capitalist society if youd like, just pose a perfect example like mine!

A  concept, to creation, to supply, to demand, to .. hiring additional help!
*

Yes, but you can create the greatest product in the world and if there isn't the distribution of wealth necessary to create enough demand to sustain the business then the business will fail.

Jobs are created by those sitting on their butts with a sign begging for money.    We should just cut out all of the businesses and stop trying to help them and only help the Democrats that take vacations every couple of months and do nothing for our country!

Not that this ridiculous comment is actually worth addressing, but no candidate who has run for any office in any political party has ever believed anything close to that or anything that resembles the idea you presented in this comment.

Context is an amazing thing, soundbites can be so easily manipulated and twisted so I find it quite pathetic when someone posts a soundbite with no comment on it and has clearly already passed judgement on what the person say. Here is the context if any of you are interested.

QUOTE
“Don’t let anybody tell you that raising the minimum wage will kill jobs. They always say that. I’ve been through this. My husband gave working families a raise in the 1990s. I voted to raise the minimum wage and guess what? Millions of jobs were created or paid better and more families were more secure. That’s what we want to see here, and that’s what we want to see across the country.

“And don’t let anybody tell you, that, you know, it’s corporations and businesses that create jobs. You know, that old theory, trickle-down economics. That has been tried. That has failed. That has failed rather spectacularly.

“One of the things my husband says, when people say, what did you bring to Washington? He says, well I brought arithmetic. And part of it was he demonstrated why trickle down should be consigned to the trash bin of history. More tax cuts for the top and for companies that ship jobs over seas while taxpayers and voters are stuck paying the freight just doesn’t add up. Now that kind of thinking might win you an award for outsourcing excellence, but Massachusetts can do better than that. Martha understands it. She knows you have to create jobs from everyone working together and taking the advantages of this great state and putting them to work.”

And she's right. Trick down economics doesn't work. Consumers drive the economy, not the top. Where do consumers come from? All classes, but especially the middle. In fact, the more wealth that's at the top is harmful to the economy because it reduces the number of consumers with purchasing power.

For example, a person only needs a certain amount of pillows. Pillow companies make their profit based on how many pillows they sell. A person with $10,000,000 in wealth isn't going to buy more pillows than 10 people with $1,000,000 in wealth or 20 people with $500,000 in wealth.

The economy is driven by the amount of consumers and the amount of consumers is determined by the amount of people with disposable income. Hilary is absolutely right when she says the theory of trickle down economics doesn't work.

Zimbow, you probably have your job because a company developed a product or service that customers felt was worth purchasing and had the money to purchase. Since more purchasers like the services or products of the company then the supply they had, they needed to find a way to increase the supply they provide, hence they hired you and all your co-workers. It wasn't because the CEO of your company was sitting on a pile of dough and decided he felt like hiring more people.

QUOTE(sasports @ Aug 15 2014, 09:48 AM)
I feel the hobby has made several changes for the worst, but I feel like we, the collectors, are to blame.  Very few people collect just to collect any more.  Its about how much can I get.  That's why I started my Free Kids Cards initiative when I was setting up my shop.  When I go to the flea market or even if I just see a kid looking at cards at walmart.  I make sure to give kids cards to try to get them back into collecting.

Cards are like most collectibles, the industry will rise and fall, but 100 years from now, cards will still be a hobby.
*

I know I'm late to the party but I feel the need to comment on this post. I feel this post is accurate in the fact that there are less people "collecting to collect." But I wouldn't blame that necessarily on the collectors themselves (or atleast completely on them). I feel that what you've seen over the last 10+ years in the price of packs and boxes has shot through the roof. I remember when I first started collecting seriously I could get a box of 2005-06 SPx Basketball (18 Packs with 3 Hits Per Box) (With rookies likeChris Paul, Deron Williams, Danny Granger, etc) for around 60$ (About 4$ per pack). In 2007-08 Upper Deck announced that SPx would become 10 packs per box with 1 hit her pack the boxes all of the sudden became $150+ per box ($15+ per pack). Unfortunately this became a common trend of the times which not only led to a dramatic increase in the cost of collecting but it also led to the value of the average card going down because autographs and game used cards became so much more common. It became harder and harder to find decent mid-end products for reasonable prices.

Once collecting becomes that expensive, it's hard to keep justifying it as a hobby as the amount of money being spent to maintain a decent collection keeps increasing dramatically year after year. At a point, the amount of money being spent doesn't justify the feeling of collecting anymore. That's why I think you see many more "casual" collectors focusing on the money side of the hobby than you used to. It's because they want to keep collecting but they can't justify the amount of money being spent to collect without some sort of monetary return to reduce the expense of their collection. I would argue the hobby has forced collectors to focus on the monetary side of collecting in order to justify the amount of money being spent to collect.

There's a great place in the City of Industry (Not too far from the Anaheim Area) known as Frank & Sons Collectible Show that's open every Saturday morning/afternoon and Wednesday night. I haven't been there in a year or so, but theres about 20 or so dealers who sell singles and such as well as a few wholesalers selling boxes at pretty good prices. It's my favorite place in the Los Angeles/Orange County area to go for boxes and cards in general.

Bob,

Posted it here because it said suggestions were needed. Whether or not it is decided by one or many, when one of the CZT is constantly harassing another member for sometimes annoying but seemingly harmless behavior until it provokes said "egregious behavior", it's a problem. Last thing I'll say on the subject.

Comrade Marc
*

That is the biggest reason that alot of older member either left the site or were provoked into doing something that resulted in a ban. I think it had a much bigger effect than most assume.

I think updating the front page is also a must. When the most recent "Hobby News and Headlines" are from 2006, and the most recent "Featured Reviews" are from 2009, it is a major turnoff to potential new members. This is something that needs to be updated.

I don't think the lack of trades is an issue at this point. The lack of new members, which means that their is a smaller "inventory stream" and no new faces to trade with is why there is a lack of trading. Once the recruiting issues are fixed, so will the trading problem.

I remember when I was new to TCC that Bob also ran openchecklist.com, but that site also remained largely ignored and lacked updates for new products, so I was surprised to get an email today from them informing me that a new beta of the site is coming. Which made me wonder, and I figure someone on this site knows the answer, is Bob still active working on Open Checklist and making this update, or have other people taken the reigns like what has happened on this site during Bob's lengthy absence?
