NEW YORK — L.A. Galaxy forward Edson Buddle, who has been on a record goalscoring tear to start the 2010 season, was recognized today as Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) following his two-goal performance last Saturday against defending MLS Cup champions Real Salt Lake.

WATCH: Buddle puts LA 1-0 ahead vs. RSL

WATCH: Buddle scores his seventh of the season

The 28-year-old striker has become the first player in MLS history to score the first seven goals for his club to start a season. After four matches, the Galaxy are perfect and Buddle has accounted for all of his team’s goals.

The New York native made up for his last appearance against RSL in MLS Cup 2009, when he missed the final Galaxy penalty kick in the shootout that decided last year’s champion. At The Home Depot Center this weekend, his 12th-minute header gave L.A. the momentary lead and his 76th-minute blast from the top of the box proved the game-winner.

“I always stay level headed,” said Buddle, who was unaware of the record he set after the match. “I’m not a person to get over the top because there are ups and downs. I’m just enjoying it right now. I’m glad I’m in a good rhythm and just hope I can keep scoring.”

Last week Landon Donovan joined the chorus from the experts in making the case for Buddle to be given a chance at the U.S. World Cup team. Buddle’s only U.S. national-team appearance came seven years ago in March 2003.

“I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it,” Donovan said. “The goals are going in but there are other chances in the game that he’s just missing. He’s getting pulled around by people like you wouldn’t believe. He’s getting fouled and hammered.”

Now in his 10th season in the league, Buddle won two Player of the Week awards in 2008, another two in 2004 and once in 2003, 2005 and 2006.

“Forwards are supposed to score goals, he’s scoring goals,” Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena said. “He’s been great. What more can you say? His performance has been outstanding. I don’t know how else to describe what he’s done to date.”

•Buddle is the first MLS player to score all seven goals for his club to open the season
•Buddle's brace helped the Galaxy to their fourth win in four games
•This is Buddle's eighth career Player of the Week award

http://mlsnet.com/news/article/convey-not-...y-disappointing

The composition of the 30-man preliminary roster for the United States’ World Cup squad represents a win-win for the San Jose Earthquakes.

While several Western Conference foes will need to do without the services of key components -- most noticeably Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle from the league-leading Los Angeles Galaxy -- the Quakes don’t need to fear losing the man who has been an integral part of their resurgence: 27-year-old midfielder Bobby Convey.

“To think that I’m not one of the best 30 players in our country is very disappointing,” Convey told MLSsoccer.com. “I think I’ve spoken to [U.S. coach] Bob Bradley three times in my entire life, so I don’t know what he’s thinking, and it’s not up to me. All I can do is play and work hard and that’s about it.”

Convey has been succeeding at that, and in a big way. Since taking over full-time on the left wing after sharing the duties there with Darren Huckerby last season, Convey has registered five assists -- second in the league behind Donovan’s nine and two shy his career MLS high -- to propel San Jose to a 4-2 record to open the season.

In addition, Convey's two-way work with left back Ramiro Corrales has significantly strengthened what had been a weak leg in San Jose's defense last season.

“To Bobby’s credit, he’s been doing a great job,” said center back Bobby Burling, who converted a Convey corner kick into his first career MLS goal Saturday against New York. “Obviously, his services have been great.”

To Burling, Convey’s assist total doesn’t tell the whole story, but instead just scratches at its surface.

“He does a lot of little things that don’t show up on the stat sheet, and I think that now that he’s getting those assists, people are thinking, ‘Oh, he’s back to where he was,’” Burling said. “People don’t see it day in and day out like we do. He’s one of the fittest guys on this team. In fitness drills and stuff like that, he can run for days.”

Nevertheless, Convey won’t be making the trip to South Africa, which means he will be available for Quakes duty on May 22 (at Seattle), May 29 (vs. Toronto) and June 2 (vs. Columbus).

Although the 2006 World Cup veteran accentuated the positives of staying home and being able to focus on his team and family more, he admitted that he would have loved to be a part of the national team.

Oh DC, you need a real DP in midfield or you will stink on toast all season.

Pretty hilarious that we shipped a boatload of stuff to Philly for the right to select Troy Perkins, who has been awful since he came back, only to actually deliver a top notch young goalie from our academy in Bill Hamid.

Oh well, looking like a lost year unless we pull a rabbit out of our hat.

Footie @ Wrigley????

http://www.chicago-fire.com/news/2010/06/fire-wrigley

After seeing hockey fans fill an icy Wrigley Field to watch the Blackhawks and Red Wings on New Year’s Day 2009 and hearing the buzz surrounding November’s Illinois-Northwestern football game at the ballpark, it appears the Fire want “next.”

According to a source with knowledge of the negotiations, the Fire and Cubs are kicking around the possibility of having Chicago’s MLS club play Mexico’s Club America in a friendly at the Friendly Confines.

A Cubs spokesperson confirmed the teams have been in talks but said in an e-mail that “there is nothing confirmed for 2010 or beyond.

“That said, we have looked into hosting a soccer game at Wrigley Field over the past two seasons and can contemplate seeing soccer at Wrigley in the future.”

The exhibition would be the first soccer game at Wrigley since the Chicago Sting of the defunct North American Soccer League stopped playing there in 1984.

In an interview with the Tribune in April, Fire president Dave Greeley talked about the possibility of the Fire playing at Wrigley Field. A Fire spokesperson said the club had no comment.

The Fire has played its home games at Toyota Park in Bridgeview since 2006 after spending its first eight seasons at Soldier Field and Benedetti–Wehrli Stadium (then called Cardinal Stadium) in Naperville. In four home games this season, the Fire have averaged 14,333 fans, in the bottom-half among Major League Soccer’s 17 teams.

America is among Mexico’s most popular clubs and has a strong following in the Chicago area. The Fire signed a multiyear marketing partnership with America in April 2009, including two exhibition games last season

NEW YORK—The New York Red Bulls earned their biggest road win in five years on Saturday, thanks in huge part to Juan Pablo Ángel's brace.

The pair of goals helped New York defeat the Kansas City Wizards, 3-0, and earned the Red Bulls' Designated Player the MLS Player of the Week honor for Week 13, as voted on by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) on Monday.

The former Aston Villa and River Plate marksman put the Red Bulls 2-0 up in the 82nd minute after holding off Wizards defender Aaron Hohlbein before firing a half-volley through the hands of Kansas City goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen.

WATCH: Angel gets his first

Ángel then iced his performance with a superbly taken solo effort.

After collecting a long ball fired from deep inside the Red Bulls' own half, Ángel again threw off Hohlbein's challenge before taking the ball to the end line. Nielsen came off his line to try and corral the striker, but Angel weaved his way around the goalkeeper and then fired his effort into an open net.

WATCH: Angel makes it 3-0

The 34-year-old Colombian now has eight goals in 13 games this season to lead the Red Bulls in scoring. He has tallied just one fewer than the Los Angeles Galaxy's Edson Buddle, who leads the league.

This is Ángel's fourth career MLS Player of the Week honor and his first since Week 20 of 2008.

Ángel narrowly edged out the Philadelphia Union's Sebastien Le Toux for this week's honor. Le Toux scored a goal and added an assist in the Union's PPL Park opener, in which they defeat Seattle, 3-1.

Ángel will have a chance to add to his impressive tally on Sunday, July 4, when the Red Bulls travel to Colorado to face the Rapids.

CHICAGO (June 28, 2010) – The third round of the 2010 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup kicks into action Tuesday night, June 29, as six Major League Soccer clubs enter the competition to face winners from the tournament’s second round. The third round concludes on Wednesday, June 30, when 2009 champion Seattle Sounders FC travels to Portland to face the Timbers while 2009 runner-up DC United hosts the Richmond Kickers. Three United Soccer Leagues Second Division teams, five USSF D-2 Pro League sides and eight Major League Soccer clubs comprise the remaining squads in the 97th edition of the tournament.

The winners of this week’s games advance to the quarterfinals, to be held July 6-7. The semifinals are set for Aug. 31-Sept. 1, and the final will be played Oct. 5.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, which is recognized as U.S. Soccer’s National Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. The tournament has crowned a champion for 95 consecutive years dating back to 1914. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
