Some companies were plating the state quarters and then selling them. There were probably some examples that were stolen, or cashed in for the face value of the coins. Might be worth a little more than a regular quarter but there is probably not very much gold there.

The only other explanation is sometimes the copper center used in the planchlet (blank coin) strip bleeds through to one of the surfaces because the outer metal was too thin, but this does not appear to be the case since you have it on both sides.

That decision would be yours. It is a neat keepsake, and does not hurt at all to hold onto since you are only talking about a quarter. I am willing to bet somewhere out there are the remainder of the set that someone broke up. They probably originally paid a decent amount for them over face value.

Here are the ones the Franklin mint sells for $200 a set of 50: http://www.franklinmint.com/product1.aspx?...Product_ID=9538

I would say it is worth more than a quarter, but the little bit of gold electroplated to the coin is probably not worth more than a few dollars if that. I am not sure how much "gold" is electroplated to it in portions of an ounce, but I would imagine not very much based on how thin the plating is and the fact you can see wear spots where the gold rubbed out on the high points of Washington's face.

If it were mine I would put it away, since again it is only a quarter, just as something unique, you do not see everyday.

Who knows maybe someday gold will hit $10,000 an ounce and you will have a $20 coin there. laugh.gif

One of the local banks around here was selling Iowa ones....I think the normal ones in a "holder" was $1.25 and the gold ones were $3.25..I suspect that's what you have
