Collector Zone _ Group Box Breaks _ Boxbreakers BIG BREAK Draft Thread

BIG BREAK DRAFT:

Welcome to the 2nd part of our Boxbreakers BIG BREAK... the Draft! We just concluded busting all 39 High End Boxes and all the details of each box are provided in posts following this one. Please use this thread for making your box selections and if there are any trades made please post them here so I can keep the draft order accurate.

Each person will have a 12 hour timelimit to make their selection however we will only run the clock from 9am-9pm(ct) so basically you do have a whole day to make your selection. However, in the interest of keeping the draft moving so people can get their cards sooner please be open to making your selection much faster than that. If you may not be around the thread when your turn is approaching please feel free to PM or email me with a short list of preferences so I can make your pick for you if you're not around. I will make every attempt to warn someone when their time is drawing short but the responsibility is yours to get a pick in so at the end of the time period if a pick has not been made and I can't reach you we may bypass your pick. If we do, you will be welcome to still make your selection at any point upon your return to the thread. Hope I didn't forget anything but let's remember this is supposed to be fun so I want to make sure everyone gets their pick in and gets something that they want.

Not yet... me thinks he has a few offers on the table to think through. Clock expires at noon(ct) tomorrow.

Posted by: Gottabe Apr 6 2009, 03:21 PM

Sorry about the delay guys. I actually had to work today. laugh.gif

Ok, let's get this moving.

I'll be selecting Box #16 2008 Exquisite with the Ben Roethlisberger 1/1.

I am still fielding offers on it, but since none involve another draft position with it. I'll let everyone else get on with their picks..

I am interested in the Caldwell 1/1 and the Pete Rose from Prime cuts.

Happy picking guys...

Hey Rightmoa, you can have the Stewart now biggrin.gif

Posted by: rightmoa Apr 6 2009, 03:28 PM

sorry to sound rash, did not think about the trade offers. Nice pick on the Big Ben. I will not be taking Jonathan Stewart just yet. Might be looking caldwell, someone just sent me an email with a overpriced offer, I must think about it a little.

Joking of course..........take your time.....I might...will be a tough decision!

Also, still taking offers for the #3 pick, either trading down or selling/trading. Just pm me.

Just an opinion but, The Stewart should sale the best, The Thorpe is a great card to keep.
Caldwell...too early..
I think he might be in the 5-8 box range.
Now if the Caldwell had been auto'd, that's a different story.

I'll give you my box (minus Ben of course) for that spot... laugh.gif

Do what you need to. I actually think 3-10 are gonna be the toughest decisions.

Posted by: rightmoa Apr 6 2009, 07:32 PM

those brady quinn boxes are nice for the 8 through 10.
You could trade down for that and then they are gone and you lose
your mine

Posted by: Tb40 Apr 6 2009, 07:46 PM

I'm very glad that I got in this break. I just hope that there is a decent football box left at #31. On another note, if you want to do this again Chris I'm definitely in. Thanks fdor all of your hard work and time.
Thanks, Matt

Posted by: barrow Apr 6 2009, 07:51 PM

I think if this happens again there may need to be a draft, to purchase spots. I think there will be a lot more interest the next time around, and don't think a first-come-first-serve approach would really be fair.

Maybe you have x number of days to sign up. Chris randomizes the list of people creating a draft order. Then you choose which spot you are going to purchase in that order. That way every one has an equal chance at the opportunity at purchasing whatever spot they want. Then after the draft, the remaining slots would be first come first served.

Posted by: mo2116 Apr 6 2009, 07:57 PM

i think the way w did it works just fine but chris had an idea for the top spot with a silent auction also returning members should get first crack lol

Posted by: Tb40 Apr 6 2009, 08:02 PM

I agree on the returning members having the first shot at joining. I'm fine with the first come first serve idea.
Thanks again, Matt

You think a race to claim a spot is more fair than every one interested having an equal chance at the spot of their choice? I don't see how you could reason that. I just don't see why we wouldn't implement a system to make it as fair as possible if we could. Like I said, Chris was a PIONEER with this break format. If he does it again it's going to be a lot more popular, and the upper spots are going to have a lot of interest.

OK, that's the #1 spot, but not every one wants the #1 spot. I don't care, I'm fine with first come first serve, I was just making a suggestion so every one has an equal chance. The more I think about it, it probably doesn't even matter. A lot of people talk, but then when it comes time to pull the trigger and sign your money away there's major hesitation.

I emailed Chris about this when most of the Top 10 was available and kick myself for not taking part in this break.

I will not make that mistake again.

Posted by: barrow Apr 6 2009, 08:33 PM

Actually I just re-read Chris's original post. This is apparently a KEEPERS LEAGUE. All slot owners will have the opportunity to lock a slot for the next BIG BREAK (owners of multiple slots will only be able to keep one).

Just kidding!

Posted by: NYMETSJETS Apr 6 2009, 08:33 PM

Sorry for the hold up, still looking at a few trades, waiting to here back. Was really hoping the Stewart box would be here at #3 so still trying to determine what I want to do. Know which box I'll take if I keep the spot but trying to work out other deals to trade down.

I don't remember saying that? I would tend to not honor the same slots but to just give the participants of this break prior notice before I post a public thread. If I said otherwise I will try to honor my word but I couldn't find where I said that? Either way I am receiving enough positive feedback through these posts and by email that I do believe we'll try thois again. I'll wait until we're all done and try working some numbers to see what we can do. I already am sold on the silent auction on the top slot but have some other thoughts as well. Despite Prime Cuts not showing too well I still like the idea of the dual sport idea as well. The only question in my mind is to just cut one case of 07NT and leave Prime Cuts at 15 boxes to make a 30 box break... or cut out Exquisite which will drive our costs down but also eliminate the possibility of some major hits (like this breaks #1 hit). Lots of options but I think after some time we'll try this again.

Posted by: über Apr 6 2009, 08:51 PM

Prime Cuts was pretty weak for the price. I'd suggest going for something different (still baseball) instead.

I agree. I'd seriously consider getting in next time, particularly if there was an all-football one. I'm an 'old school" collector who actually prefers Hall-of-Famers to the hottest rookies. NT is a great product for someone like me, but Prime Cuts seems to lean a little too heavily on Rookies who probably won't make it.

Thanks Bill...there is actually a limit of 12 daytime hours to make the picks. I expect the picks to come in much faster once we reach pick 5 or 6 but the top spots are getting some offers that they want to field first so I don't blame them for checking out all the options. Things should pick up soon.

I have decided on my pick. Couldn't wait any longer to hear back on other offers. Pretty exited to add this baby to my collection for now:

user posted image

It is available for trade for other picks or for trade/sale as well. Love to have this in my collection but not typically what I collect so will still entertain offers on it.

Posted by: Gottabe Apr 6 2009, 10:27 PM

Nice pick NY

Hmmmm What goes next

Caldwell Young or Rose. Just my guesses
The Montana's and Quinn's are eagerly awaiting their arrivals to the plate.

As for Chris's break choosing methods and fairness. I'm not sure anyone noticed that the slot I purchased was called for and then went unpaid. I even waited until it was available. However he choses, I'm ok with, I wasn't even in it before that spot opened. But no matter how he does it I think those that want should pay and soon. Wanting a spot for weeks and holding up those who would pay, isn't fair either no matter how the draft is selected. I've seen him wait the extra day and take the extra slots to keep these things going. I know cash on hand can be difficult for a lot of us, but we shouldn't make it Chris' problem trying to get the break going..

I do like the NT for the HOF's

Exquisite is pricey, but some sweet cards.

Multi Sport Break YaY!

And yes I'll be back.

Posted by: faulkrules Apr 6 2009, 10:28 PM

Not a baseball guy...were any of the rookies pulled from Prime Cuts considered big hits?

Posted by: Cardman123 Apr 6 2009, 10:35 PM

Yes, the Buster Poseys and the Gordon Beckham are considered no-risk prospects. I don't think Mike Stanton is as hyped up as those two. The other highly touted prospect coming out of Prime Cuts as an encased hit are the Rick Porcellos but we didn't get any in these cases. I personally think the encased hits should be reserved for the HOF'ers and legends of the game, but those three mentioned above are very good prospects.

Very well put and I agree. I kicked around the idea of picking up the top spot after the first person backed out but thankfully (not so much after seeing the hits) Gottabe picked up the spot. Please keep in mind at one time Chris was signed up for 6 or 8 slots and I am sure he would have kept them in order to keep the break going if he had to....thanks again Chris. I am in on the next one as well and I am up for however it is easiest on Chris.

I will take box #38 with the Joe Jackson Bat / Ted Williams Jersey / Lou Gehrig Jersey #22/25. By the way, where was the case hit for the 07 Exquisite. UD sure does love to put one good to ok card with 4 other crap cards. For the price the Exquiste didn't deliver. I think National Tearsures and Prime did a lot better.

Thanks for the work Chris.

Calvin is a nice hit. But the rest of the stuff in the box is pretty much worthless. A one color jersey card in a $500 dollar pack. A event worn one color swatch. Even the Calvin is event worn. How much does that jersey really cost them. I mean at least put nice looking patches on the base jersey cards. They won't be worth that much more but at least they are nice for someone's collection. I get better and bigger jerseys in Gridiron gear and they are worth the same as the $500 pack jerseys. I think pretty much every pack of Prime was a better deal than 4 of the Exquisite boxes.

alright guys....its a little late, but I got it done.

All 39 boxes in an excel spreadsheet with all pics of the cards embedded. I formatted it so it prints three boxes to a page (landscape) - with room for notes. The first four boxes chosen in the draft are grayed out.

I will update the file at the link location, so if you want an updated spreadsheet just revisit this link.

** I formatted and proofread/double-checked the best I could (quickly) - so I don't think there are any errors, but I don't make any promises...

hope this helps....I know I need it to lay out in front of me to see all at once to help me decide my picks

By the way we should do a trading card central fantasy league and see who drafts based on their collection vs best players. Would the seahawks guy take julius jones with a first pick or would i take jason campbell as a my number one qb?

A horrible pick to you might be an awesome pick to another person.

I know. I am just bored waiting for picks. At this point there are no really bad picks.

Personally, when my picks come up, I am just picking the box that has the card(s) I would be happiest to add to my personal collection. I'm not going to worry about which box contents has the best chance of earning the biggest dollar on the market. Then again...I didn't join this break to make money.

Posted by: TTYLER516 Apr 8 2009, 04:07 PM

if i took something for my PC it would be the Roger Maris pack, but i dont think i could use a $340 pick for that. I am leaning toward the slaton pack if tileman doesnt take it or the pete rose if he doesnt take that

I think you should trade up for my Thorpe so I can pick a football box biggrin.gif .
Actually, I think these should be the next to go in my biased opinion (maybe not in this exact order):
#15 - Caldwell Logo/Slaton RC Patch auto
#21 - Calvin Johnsohn Patch Auto
#35 - Pete Rose Quad Jersey Auto
#1 - Quinn Patch Auto/Moon-Cambell Dual-Butkus Patch
#13 - Montana nickname / Sims Auto / Mendenhall Jumbo Patch Auto
#5 - V Young Patch Auto - Edwards Patch Auto / S Rice Patch Auto

Posted by: Cardman123 Apr 8 2009, 04:14 PM

So if Tileman really is out of town, and Chris is also out of town and has limited online access...what exactly happens if no pick goes down tonight? Does the whole draft stay stalled until they re-appear?

Posted by: TTYLER516 Apr 8 2009, 04:17 PM

tell ya what NY, if you can cut the cash part of the deal back to $50 I will make that trade.

I think the young patch and sidney rice is a big gamble. Sidney has done nothing and Vince may be 3rd string. The trent is still good. Th slaton is good, but did cadwell if play last year? But there are about 5 boxes better than that, as far as value and stuff I would collect.

Hmmmm. Tileman's a regular of Chris's breaks, as much as I'd love everyone to move up a spot if he doesn't make his pick. We should probably wait for him, assuming he has a good excuse.

Anyone picking in Draft Slots #7-12 and looking to trade down PLZ PM me. I have some interest in possibly moving up. I have Picks #14-16-27-28. I will be leaving soon for a couple hours for my Son's game but will be back around 8:30PM PST.

Posted by: Gottabe Apr 8 2009, 07:06 PM

I know I have picked and my opinion may not count much, but here is my two cents....

Let's take the first pick as an example even though it is extreme it is still the same principle.

I had first pick and suddenly had no internet access. Couldn't get to the library, family illness or whatever. Second place takes the first pick, in this case the Big Ben, I wind up with the Stewart or worse... I would be a little ticked and if it were your pick I think you might as well.

It may not be the Big Ben at stake but it is still the most important card of what is left which is what was paid for...

It sux both ways I know, and personally 2nd or 39th I wouldn't mind waiting for the guy. Chris did set a time limit, but things do happen that sometimes we can't control.

It's up to you guys. Even though Chris made the rules I am pretty sure Chris wouldn't have a problem if the rest of the group willingly gave a little time to Tileman or whomever it may be throughout the picks.
I could be wrong, it's just my opinion.

NY Take the deal....lol

NO ONE is losing anything by waiting......

next time you could be the one without internet access and we skip you -- would really suck then

I agree with Gottabe....no harm in waiting

PM sent and hopefully deal reached!

On the wait, think we need to be patient. There will be zero chance of others picking before Tileman. Not really fair to hold everyone up either but things do come up and if it is prolonged, Chris might just have to pick the box most valuable in his mind (or what he thinks Todd will want). No way is it fair to skip his pick untill he returns. Also, Todd is usually offline during the day and gets on late at night, so hopefully he will be on later tonight (unless he really is out of town).

Correct. Thanks for the trade Tim. Now the dilemma is mine with what to pick with #8.

Posted by: Cardman123 Apr 8 2009, 07:59 PM

Just to be clear....I was in no way suggesting that Tileman's turn be skipped. He paid big money for that spot and deserves to get the box that would mean the most to him. I was just wondering out loud what is going to happen if he is indeed out for an extended period of time (out of town could mean days?) and Chris' availability is also in question right now.

My two picks are in the early and late 20's so it is going to be a long time before I even have to think about what I want....and extra day or two isn't going to kill me.

Posted by: Takeobeavis Apr 8 2009, 09:34 PM

There will be no skipping unless Chris decides that. I would imagine Tileman is smarter than us and just decided to pick on his day(6th) instead of sitting here all day everyday and hitting refresh cause we had nothing better to do. But the trash talking and whining is still fun.

Congrats Todd! Big boy at 6.3 being 4 weeks early (not that I really know what I'm talking about). Hope mom and the boy are doing good! Peyton...hmmm, I like the sounds of Joe Willie a little better...lol, maybe when my turn comes around in a few years.

No problem Todd. Thanks! Just so everyone knows, still 5 opens spots in my current break which is 3 cases of UD SP Authentic 06/07/08 - 36 Boxes total! Link in my signature. (Sorry for the plug in your thread Chris, but since your in my break too thought you wouldn't mind)

Still going over my options for my pick. Traded down hoping by slim chance Tileman would go with a different box at #7 so now am re-evaluating the other boxes.

Congrats Tileman! That's terrific news. You'll be pleased to read that you have some pretty good friends here as the overwhelming concensus was to give you more time to make your pick even though nobody knew the great reason you had behind the delay.

As for names...I lost out on all accounts for my suggestions of Bernie or Otto for my boys names....that's why the dogs name is Brady.

Thanks again for updating the thread!

throwing my 2-cents in and hopefully by the end of the day, Gottabe and I should have a nickle or even a dime...

I took my time and paid for that right to pick 5th. i had a ton offers, wanted to look up book values, sell values, and see what my best option was. I would have been ###### if i would have been skipped.

the only complaint about this break that i have had was people not being patient. I never once said anything to the top 4 spots about time. actually in TK's case, I supported him with my opinion on his pick of a box and told him to take his time.

this would be an awesome break if people would just have some patience.

good luck to all...

I had no idea the draft would be on me when I got home, partly because I didnt know when we were even coming home from the hospital. After starting to read the thread when I got on, I was getting worried from reading the post of some rookies. But luckily the core of this break and any that Chris runs as well as the ones Joel and TK (webbgem and nymetsjets) operate are people that I consider friends, and once again I say thank you to you guys for being patient.

Also, to those picking in the next few packs or later, the Caldwell 1/1 rc Logo patch from 08 National Treasures is available. PM me some offers if interested. Would consider trading for lower spot, cash/paypal, or cards.

I will be away from comp from around 12 CST until 4-5 CST today as we have to take Peyton to the pediatricain to do some blood work and tests. PM me and I will get back to you ASAP, when we get back from the Dr's visit.

Posted by: NYMETSJETS Apr 9 2009, 01:36 PM

OK guys. Sorry for the delay. After much debate, I have decided to draft the Calvin Johnson Box #21 with the #8 pick in the draft. This was a very tough decision as there were other boxes that were very close behind that had multiple cards that I would have liked rather than just the one big one.

That being said, if someone below me in the next handful of positions was hoping for this box let me know, I would have no problem trading down again if a deal could be reached. Or if others are interested, just let me know, took the card mainly for trade potential.

NP- you are going to get your first choice. I have just made a trade for the #9 pick but since he doesn't have a TCC account he isn't able to post on here so waiting for confirmation from Chris before making my pick.

In the meantime I'm trying to decide between two boxes

I'm not sure what I'd be able to work out, but if anyone has a pick at 20 or better, I might be interested at trading INTO the draft. Keep in mind, I don't have a pick at all.

I might like to arrange something should a particular box or two drop. PM me if you're interested.

Draft price has dropped to $240 level (current pick)

There are still 5 Boxes of 07 NT left (don't know that price).

2 boxes of 06 Exquisite $354 per
1 box of 07 Exquisite at $333 per and
14 boxes of the play off prime at $240

Who said you weren't going to see an Exquisite box for $200?
It just may happen.
Everything from here is cheaper than you could have purchased it.

That has to be a bargain in anyone's book...

Thanks, the trade was confirmed and I'll update the list. That was a box I was starting to look at moving up for as well... nice pick up.

Tony (SportsStash)...welcome to TCC. GGlad to see you got the approval to post so there's no going back now!

Thanks Tkin on the kind words. I think this draft portion has worked even better than I thought (despite the slow speed). I wanted trades to be a big part of it but what I didn't count on (and I'm very glad to see) is the offers from non-participants to trade for cards that are on the draft board so the participants selecting a box can work out a nice deal for something they really like even if there's not a box out there that they are in love with.

I think we'll be doing this again!

When Chris was busting I could read the descriptions but could not see the pictures but knew that box was nice. I wish the patch on the one was a little better centered but its still really nice. Had a tough decision between that and the Eddie Murray. If it would have been a Dale Murphy it would have been a no brainer.

It does have some good re-sale value but would have been too early at #10 in my opinion. But it was the top box left on my list of preferences.

Seahawks, that new Boz signature of yours is a monstrosity, I LOVE IT!  I literally laughed out loud when I saw it, but in a good way because it's so ridiculous.

Hopefully we'll get more than 2-3 picks in today wink.gif I never imagined this draft would take this long.

With that being said Picks #27 and #28 are still FOR SALE (discounted) for anyone who wants to jump in here. Some decent tradebait will still be available at these picks and possibly even an Exquisite Football Box biggrin.gif

Sorry Matt...too far a drop for me.

Posted by: mo2116 Apr 14 2009, 02:35 PM

deal was also suppose to be for a swap of the 30 and 38 picks so i will wait for tileman to respond before my pick

Posted by: tileman Apr 14 2009, 06:15 PM

I thought Mo2116 agreed to one trade and he thought I agreed to another trade, so as soon as he gets on this afternoon everything will be official....just making sure there are no misunderstandings...

Posted by: tileman Apr 14 2009, 09:04 PM

after going over details with Mo, he has decided not to complete trade as posted earlier. I am waiting to hear back from another member who pm'ed about 20 minutes ago. If i dont hear back in next couple minutes, I will keep spot and draft

Posted by: tileman Apr 14 2009, 09:15 PM

21st spot has been traded to tb40 for his 31st spot and combo of cash and cards

Posted by: Tb40 Apr 14 2009, 09:17 PM

I agree. Chris do you need the details of this trade or do we need to post them in the thread?
Please lmk. Thanks, Matt

No one has been posting details of their trades in the thread-just as long as you both have noted (agreed to) within the thread a trade has taken place things can move along. Chris has been in and out a lot during this draft.

Matt...the details of the trade do not need to be posted in the thread. Those are private between you, Tileman, and possibly Chris. Please make your pick when you are ready so we can keep this draft moving. My pick is ready once yours is made, no matter what you pick.

Thanks...Joe

Thanks, as long as both parties agree you can proceed and make your pick without having to wait for my approval. I'll note the change in the draft board.

You chose wisely. You picked the only box of football I was considering at that spot, but I would have only chosen it for resale value. I prefer to collect stuff for PC, so you made my choice easy. I was 50/50 on taking the Addai rookie.

Posted by: WestCoastSkinsFan Apr 15 2009, 12:27 AM

Minor nudge for anyone with an upcoming pick: I'd still be interested in trading into a slot.

I thought maybe that box had a chance to fall to me with all of the football guys in here-the NEFTALI PEREZ AU adds some nice support to that box with him being one of the better rookie autos available in this product.

If your interested in trading that murray let me know.

I was struggling over boxes #2, 17, and 12 with the Otto Graham cut, and went with #17 because of the Addai. I might want to jump back in with a trade if anybody is interested.
Thanks, Matt

TGo22 emailed me as he still hasn't received authorization to post on TCC as a new member. He is open to trade offers if anyone wants to contact him at gmantd2@yahoo.com.
