Ok, over the weekend I hit a yard sale and found a box of 30 or so hockey cards from the 1980's. I purchased the box for $3 and it included some unscratched 1980-81 Cards in EX-nrmt shape, as well as a Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemeiux from the 86-87 Topps set. The bad news was that whoever had the Gretzky and Lemeiux did not take good care of them and both were creased. I still think they were worth it as I picked them up figuring you do not see too many of those cards, although they are not as rare as the 50s and before cards.

My question is do other people collect creased cards, as fillers or do you think I wasted part of the $3?

I just want to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

I wouldn't have a problem if a card was creased on a vintage card. As long it didn't go thru the face of the player on the card. But on a modern card I would use it as a filler card until I could find a better condition card.

Kindling for the fireplace unfortunately.

Burn baby Burn...

At card shows collectors reguialr pass up creased or damaged cards (real Collectors that is).

Cards like the ones you are describing are nice to keep for yourself but with the plentifulness of those cards in better condition...welll you get where I am going..

I have a 1961 Mantle that looks like a broken vase becuase of all the creases. It was given to me by an old girlfriend so I keep it for sentimental value only...It is not worth a red nickel to anyone else...

Once a card has a crease, it really can only get a VG grade at best. So, the cards would have to be valuable (vintage, key rookies, etc.) to be worth much of anything with creases.

With that said, I normally keep my creased cards as well to use as fillers, etc.

If it were a pre-war card, that crease would not give it an eyesore but 'character' - if you see where I'm going with this. smile.gif

Here is the way I was looking at it. I figured that the book value those two cards would have if mint, makes them key cards to that set. In 15 - 20 years who knows how many of those cards may still exist and with them both being HOF players, I figured they might be worth something someday. How many cards get lost or destroyed each year in fires, divorces, etc.

your cards would still be worth something, seeing as theyre superstars. how much are they in mint condition, anyway?

im starting to have a very bitter distaste in my mouth for these damaged cards. lol.

must've been dented when searched. just another reason to strictly minimize pack searching. rassum frassum...
