QUOTE(snkpoct137 @ Feb 24 2010, 03:11 PM) Not to mention the lions need elite players and thats what Mcoy and Suh are. Okung is far from elite and just because he is the best OT available doesnt mean we should jump on him at #2. If Jake Long or Joe Thomas were in this draft it might be a different story. Yup, the top 5 picks are all about getting elite players, or finding a desparate team who is willing to trade up and reach. The value of a #2 pick does not lie in the value of the player you may need at that spot, but of the players AVAILABLE at that spot. If you are dying for an OL, you could reach for an Okung at #2, but the value of that pick to other teams that may need QB, S, DE would possibly be higher. You could get more (in terms of draft picks) by moving down and still getting your guy. That may be difficult though. The CBA expires this year and 2011 is an uncapped year and the rookie salary cap IS coming. This is the LAST year for rookies to get mega-contracts. Teams are going to want to pay less than usual at each draft slot this year to adjust the market down for 2011. Agents are going to ask for the same money as 2009. There will be nasty holdouts for sure, so the top picks are as much of a headache as a reward. QUOTE(aceecards @ Feb 24 2010, 03:23 PM) Wait a second... The Lambs from St Louie have done nothing but pick DL or OL for the last 10 or so years! Most of them start for other teams like Jimmie Kennedy! and you can have Alex barron and jason Smith and Chris Long and... I feel for the Packer fans lament! That's true Steve! Glad you understand. Your stacks of Brian Leonards and Tye Hills would look nice next to my stack of BJ Rajis and Brandon Jacksons... You have to go back to 2004 and Steven Jackson to have any hobby value, and even his is not much.

QUOTE(cardinal @ Mar 3 2010, 07:42 PM) After a terrific combine, measured and weighed at 6' 5'', 307 lbs. with 36 inch arms, and putting up a very very impressive 38 reps in the bench press, do you still want to say that he is "far from elite"? Okung is a blue chip prospect. I am not willing to take back my statement but i am willing to say i underestimated him a bit. Its still what shows up on the field and i didnt see "elite" things from him. If you want to judge by the combine, Bruce Campbell would be the top OT and a top 5 pick. That being said, if somehow we are able to trade out of #2 and Suh is gone, i would not be upset with Okung if the FO feels he can be that franchise type LT

The only thing you could say Bruce Campbell truly has Russell Okung beat in the combine workouts was the 40 (4.85 compared to Okung's 5.17), but regardless, a 40 time is almost obsolete for an OT. I think trading out of the #2 spot would not be a bad idea. I don't know why Jim Schwartz is under this illusion that Jeff Backus is a franchise LT that solidifies the roster spot on his team.

There is now a very very high chance they will draft Okung, and if the Bucs draft Ndamukong Suh (and they probably will), Gerald McCoy could fall out of the top 5.

Fun to re-read this thread from last year before the draft!! Lots of debate about who the Packers and Lions should pick (both did pretty well) and some good predictions...along with some that were waaaaay off!
My suggestion for the Packers was:QUOTE(faulkrules @ Feb 20 2010, 11:03 AM) C.J. Spiller...not only would he provide RB depth (and a push to Ryan Grant), but he would finally add a threat to the return game and help our pitiful special teams. Thank you for listening and I hope this year you draft the final pieces that will put us in the Super Bowl! Spiller was gone early, but the Packers did get the pieces they needed in James Starks and Sam Shields. Special teams remained pitiful though...QUOTE(faulkrules @ Feb 21 2010, 09:44 AM) My point is, at pick 28, there will be no elite OL prospects available this year. Whoops, maybe there were a few, including:QUOTE(snkpoct137 @ Feb 21 2010, 07:07 PM) charles brown or bryan bulaga could be there at 28 SnakePocket was exactly right about Bulaga!QUOTE(aceecards @ Feb 24 2010, 03:21 PM) I liked that RB from Fresno State . I watched that bowl game and he seemed a perfect fit for a team looking for a RB push! And Steve was dead-on about Ryan Mathews!QUOTE(faulkrules @ Feb 25 2010, 06:01 PM) Well, the good news is all of the early projections have the Packers picking an OL. The early projections are NEVER right! And once again I was wrong. The Pack took Bulaga. Although again there was nobody of "hobby" value picked in 2010, I will never complain again because the result was a Super Bowl victory!!!
