I didn't really get the just of it from the little I watched of the Packer/Colt preseason game last night. Most of the first quarter they had the picture from the game and the sound from Wipeout. It was quite distracting.

Anyways - my understanding is that the quarterback cannot hike the ball until the referee who put the ball down is beyond the furthest player in the backfield. Generally the running back or quarterback in a shotgun. The Colts were trying to run a no huddle offense and were called a few times for an illegal snap because the referee didn't get back quick enough.

Did anyone else see or hear of this new rule? I think it will slow the game a little bit and could take some precious time away from a team doing a 2 minute drill.

I jsut looked at the boxscore from last night and Indy was called for 12 penalties. I know in the small amount of time I saw the game I saw 3 or 4 of these penalties.

I saw it, and totally hate it. I'm pretty sure they made the rule because the umpires were getting beat up standing right in the middle of the defense. If it goes on all year, I bet numerous games will be affected by it.

Well, the rule was supposedly implemented to make sure that the ref got into position to see the play. There were complaints last year that the refs had there back turned when the play started when the play started as they were hustling to get into position.

I don't like the rule and I say to the refs... run backwards. wink.gif

"Baseball players will take anything. If you had a pill that would guarantee a pitcher 20 wins but might take five years off his life, he'd take it" MLB pitcher Jim Bouton about drug use in the Major Leagues... quoted in 1969.

This rule will kill half of what the Colts do great! The run the best no huddle hurry up offenses ever! It was probably team complaining about it, because they Colts always were killing them with it! But IMO. smile.gif

Or they get faster refs.

I just thought it was terrible with the number of penalties called. Manning was getting very upset with the refs last night. With 5-6 plays in a hurry up and taking an extra 2-3 seconds means 2-3 less plays a team will be able to run in the 2 minute drill.

I don't understand, they want to make the game go quicker, but only at their convenience. Now we have to wait for the ref to get into position? Add an extra backfield ref, you morons! And if it's the case of waiting for the ref then they CANNOT start the clock until the ref is in place. This feels like a setup for someone to get paid by altering a close outcome. I'm sorry, but this rule is backasswards.

And they thought taking away TD celebrations would speed up the game.
