Thinking of joining a Group Break?

Some things to think about if you are thinking of joining a group break, some hints/tips and things to think about.

You may not get much for your money- It is a risk or gamble so to speak. Not everyone will get a "hit", and depending on boxes broke may not get much for base or any at all (I have had one where I didn't get anything for that month for $15 spot). If you can't afford to lose the money, it is better off not to play (applies to gambling and other "habits" in life too).

Do some research of your own- Are you familiar with the member doing the Break? Do they have an established trading record on TCC or are have they joined the Site very recently? You can review their transactions, or PM folks that have been in their breaks or traded with them, and ask about the person and how things went. That way you have a basis on how well this break will go, and give you a gut feeling if any "red flags" are coming up. Also make sure the numbers add up to something you feel is reasonable for fees/shipping/supplies, as one doesn't want to feel like you are buying their spot or they are making a profit on the break.

If you post that you are in break, you need to be in break- Unless something drastic happens in life, if you say you are in you are being counted on being in. Don't just sign up for any break that comes along without having the ability to be in that break.

Group breaks can be fun as you get to know some members in the group, and it can lead to trading. Also for the price of a few packs you get a chance at hits from multiple boxes, or a chance at a "big hit". Just remember it is a chance and is same as buying a box on your own, your hit can be a "nobody who isn't even on a team roster", and unless you collect that player an AU from someone who hasn't made a team yet is not too exciting. Just remember to keep things in check, just like the hobby, as one can get caught up in it and spend more than you can really afford and pay for it at a later date (trust me it happens to most folks at least once in their life, I know this from experience myself).

Justin,

I would recommend starting with trading first before you do that. Take things in small steps, do some trades here first before you jump into anything like box breaks.

Do you collect just corrent Colts? Or would you have any interest in any from the 90's era? I probably have some around here from that era I could send your way (mostly base and some inserts I imagine).
Drop me a PM if any interest in those, as I will forget where I posted this otherwise wink.gif laugh.gif

Sorry double post laugh.gif haven't done that in awhile.

Oh yeah definitely I would start trading before I made that kind of investment, although from looking at some of the failed transactions I am a little skittish about trading as well, but it isn't something I would totally rule out!

Are there any breaks where you choose by where they went to college instead of their pro team? I have never been involved in a group break because I only collect OSU guys.

That would be tough as there are quite a few college teams out there, that would be a bear to sort too laugh.gif

I think Sports Showcase is doing a 09 Sage break where you can choose a Conference but otherwise I haven't seen anything like that.

Thanks for the info. That is the same stuff I have been looking at since I joined the site in December. I have been trying to find a baseball and football break to be a part of. Thank again for the advise. If you ever get any openings in yours feel free to let the world know:) Thanks again.

Today seemed like a good time to bump this thread up in hopes that more people would read it. If you haven't read Dwight's post, please do. It can be very informative, especially for new people who haven't yet participated in a group break, but are looking to do so in the future.

It's been a month since this has been at the top, so I thought it was a fine time to get it back up there. I'll go ahead and use the same text as last month once again. smile.gif

Thanks for posting this thread. I have been trading on TCC for a few months now and have recently joined 3 group breaks for 2009 Football Products. What I do is watch a previous group break they put on before I decide to be in their breaks. See how quickly the break fills, etc.

I really like the chat features the new streaming video features has up. Makes videos more enjoyable.

I agree live is the way to go, as the chat is almost half the experience, why feel live like in Ustream better than Youtube (only problem is when power goes out before you save on Ustream grrrr had that happen last week wink.gif ). That and you get to know other folks here, which can lead to folks looking out for what you collect.
