I shoulda known the minute I mentioned Battle Royal that Billionaire Ace would start pokin' his stinkin, no-good, cheatin nose around our ring. Let's up the ante. I'm puttin a bounty on Ace's bony skull. Whoever tosses Ace over the top rope, will get a mystery prize package.

Posted by: aceecards Jul 20 2015, 07:45 AM

and do i retain the mystery package if i send everyone scurrying?

Posted by: msw_sportscards Jul 20 2015, 08:13 AM

If you think you can last with everyone gunning for ya, it's all yours.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOO

unsure.gif OH Boy! fear.gif (said as Sam Beckett from Quantum Leap)
I recall a few years back I tried this thing, it drove me nutty trying to come up with what to post. I think I made it past one round maybe. My problem was knowing some of the HOFers of the sports I don't follow, or not having a card in one category (and forgetting I had a Goodwin Champs or A&G card of that sport).

My biggest challenge will be finding where I have my cards from some of the categories, and not getting my neck broken by Aceman.

OK I guess I'm in.

Surprised we haven't heard from the saucy one in here chippin off about his newly acquired goods.

Posted by: 19th Century Indiana Jones Jul 21 2015, 09:08 AM

A card no more than BV $50? I haven't bought a Beckett price guide in years. Would there be an official single consultant for this?

Posted by: msw_sportscards Jul 21 2015, 10:16 AM

Certainly. And value is also condition sensitive.

My prediction Chipster..

PAIN

Pain and more Pain

Posted by: msw_sportscards Aug 2 2015, 01:44 AM

You want pain????? I'll give you pain!!!!!

Round 1- Field A Team

Cards/Team can be from any team sport and of any type. There must be a card for each position and the player depicted on that card must actually play or have played that position. If you choose baseball and use cards from an AL team, you must have both a DH and a P as well as the other positions. All players must have the same team on their uniforms.

Entries must be posted by 11:59 PM on Tuesday August 4th.

Let's Rumble.

How's that for pain?

As you can see, the Cubbies are going to have a tough time getting anything to drop in for a hit today.

You might have the greats........but I got all of em.

After Gibby, the rest of the rotation looks like this:

This guy has eaten up inning after inning for the past 4 seasons
http://s1265.photobucket.com/user/ForLoveOfTheGame13/media/SP2_zpszouylc6f.jpg.html
Lance Lynn

This guy has electric stuff and is the most promising young pitcher in the organization

Carlos Martinez

This lefty has been plagued by injury, but continues to impress when he's healthy

Jaime Garcia

and in the No. 5 spot, I'll give you the last Cardinals pitcher to record a no-hitter

Here's my entry...I was going to post a Washington Redskins team, but I didn't want to "say my prayers and eat my vitamins" like the racist one, BROTHER! Being that Washington has a non politically correct team name, I will avoid them during this round...sorry Joe Theismann, Art Monk, Sean Taylor, The Hogs, etc.

This is a BATTLE ROYAL...not a HR Derby or a Punt, Pass, Kick competition...it's a battle royal with rasslers!

So here are the TEAM members that comprise the tag TEAM group better known as the Beautiful People. Who doesn't like a bit or a whole lot of TNA.

Any backlash to my submission makes you "one of the ugly people" as the Beautiful People put it and also qualifies you for a Makeover!

The Beautiful People are:
Angelina Love, Velvet Sky, Madison Rayne, Lacey Von Erich and "fashionist" Kip James

As for the bench we're gonna look to the future with the exception of a rebooted pitcher and a veteran who hit for power:

http://s1265.photobucket.com/user/ForLoveOfTheGame13/media/B1_zpsyghm4kye.jpg.html
Jack Clark

the powerful and speedy youngster
http://s1265.photobucket.com/user/ForLoveOfTheGame13/media/B2_zpspk7bzazl.jpg.html
Kolten Wong

the pitcher turned power-hitting rightfielder
http://s1265.photobucket.com/user/ForLoveOfTheGame13/media/B3_zpsced1uzzf.jpg.html
Rick Ankiel

the utility guy
http://s1265.photobucket.com/user/ForLoveOfTheGame13/media/B4_zpsjqeiuvep.jpg.html
Pete Kozma

Some pinch-hitting power
http://s1265.photobucket.com/user/ForLoveOfTheGame13/media/B5_zpsdp6kcqks.jpg.html
"Big City" Matt Adams

and I guess we'll need a catcher. I'd like to go with this guy who grew up across the street from Yogi Berra and was regarded as the better prospect out of high school:
http://s1265.photobucket.com/user/ForLoveOfTheGame13/media/B6a_zpsduqizu1c.jpg.html
1951 Bowman Joe Garagiola

but sticking with my all autograph theme I'll go with this promising prospect
http://s1265.photobucket.com/user/ForLoveOfTheGame13/media/B6b_zpsyletatly.jpg.html
Sean Bean (kinda looks like the kid that played young Archie "Moonlight" Graham in Field of Dreams.

Cmon now.....I'm not even 40.

Posted by: captkirk42 Aug 11 2015, 03:17 PM

The truth is the Ernie Banks is the only one of those I showed that I have had for as long as I can remember. The Next "longest" one I got was the Jurgensen I got from Ebay in Oct 2009, The Useld Ruler and the Wings card I also got from Ebay a few years later (I'm too lazy to check my mailblog for those right now, the Jurgensen took long enough to hunt down the date) the Hockey one I recall getting with another vintage Hockey card a few years ago from a sportlots auction I think. So Yaz don't gots to be over 50 to get 50+ year old cards. (actually 45 years + for the contest round rules) Just need the determination to hunt them down and look for whatever price you are willing to get them for. Some of them vintage cards are really really surprisingly cheap. People tend to think of the super cards like Mantle Rookies and Babe Ruth cards from when he actually played and how expensive those are they tend to forget that the "commons" from many of those sets/years are still affordable in some cases.

Unfortunately, I sold most of my non-hockey vintage cards as part of my estate sale.

I do have a couple of baseball left, of which this is my submission:

1950 Bowman Johnny Vander Meer:

and for hockey, a 1968-69 Topps Jean Beliveau:

Had to get creative on this one, but we'll get to that.

First, I'll see you a legendary rookie and raise you and HOFer:

http://s1265.photobucket.com/user/ForLoveOfTheGame13/media/original3.png_zpspobksvum.jpeg.html
1969 Topps 4-in-1 Bryan Piccolo RC/Chris Hanburger(HOF)

I tried to Shatner you last year, but that didn't work. So, let's try a Vulcan Death Grip:

http://s1265.photobucket.com/user/ForLoveOfTheGame13/media/original3.png_zpsil7ttrjb.jpeg.html
1967 Leaf Star Trek #10 Spock's Box
This set was only released in 3 states making it highly sought after by non-sports collectors and Trekkies alike.

Now for my oldest and favorite card:

http://s1265.photobucket.com/user/ForLoveOfTheGame13/media/pepper_zpsty7str6k.jpg.html
1935 Diamond Stars (produced by the National Chicle Co.) #26 Pepper Martin

This is where I had to get creative. I thought I was finished. But. Then I remembered that Alex Karras was a professional wrestler while suspended from the NFL for gambling. So

http://s1265.photobucket.com/user/ForLoveOfTheGame13/media/original3.png_zps2slodyds.jpeg.html
1969 Topps 4-in-1 Alex Karras

Let's hurry up and get to the voting so I can celebrate while listening to this:

Since there were only 4 entries that satisfy the terms of this round and two of those are very loose interpretations, a half point for every category submitted will be awarded to those who were unable to fulfill the complete terms of this round. In addition, Mr. 264 gets a point for showing us his new grandbaby.

Just one card?

Hmmm I might be going down to the wire on this one.

Posted by: aceecards Aug 17 2015, 03:01 PM

I have about 100 ideas of where i wanna go with this

just... which one

Posted by: aceecards Aug 17 2015, 06:14 PM

I have chosen

I deliberated for a long time between the 1972 topps in action Roberto Clemente which is still one of my favorite photos of all time on a card, the 1955 Bowman Hank Aaron which is a pure thing of beauty the 92 ud hockey time elapsed photo of gretzky, the 89 ud time elapsed photo of nolan ryan and instead chose an iconic affordable card of someone everyone knows.

http://s1235.photobucket.com/user/collectorshotcorner/media/Baseball%20graded%20rookies%20sketches%20and%20inserts/20140541_zps24af76f6.jpg.html

look at the sheer expression of joy of MJ's face and the back mentions the words "upper deck"

So here folks is arguably the greatest basketball player in the world 3 years before he would forego a four peat to join the white sox minor league birmingham barons.

Its affordable and a great card to build a foundation on in either baseball or basketball or both!

Posted by: jaderock Aug 17 2015, 09:06 PM

I interpreted this category a bit differently focusing on CARD DESIGN and not a player, so I choose 1995 Pacific Crown Royale Base cards. The 1995 was unique, stunning and attractive because the base cards (rather than inserts) were die cut rather 4 cornered. The gold foil crown really makes the design pop. The 1995 set was so popular that it continued yearly as a concept until 2002 when the company was dissolved. The design is so desirable that it was brought back by Panini in 2011.

The top left is the 1995 Crown Royale followed by 96, 97, 98, 99 and 2000. It just so happens that Mark Brunell is pictured in each one tongue.gif

I think each of you is half right. It has to be a great design with a quality player. While we're at it, why grab one non-collector when you can get the whole family involved. Thus, I present you with:

In showing off the beauty of a base card and attempting to get new collectors interested, I would use a combination of the old and the new.

For the old, I would suggest the classic 1963 Topps design, but for the new, it would be from the Heritage set and would feature the best player currently in the game!

Posted by: msw_sportscards Aug 25 2015, 10:44 PM

This was so hard for me. I'm still torn over what I should post. I'm a sucker for retro products and, as a result, I'm left with a difficult decision. My collection is a bit narrow in focus and none of my GU and autos of the Cardinals greats are on retro products which makes the decision even more difficult.

I thought about going with 1 of my 2 favorite retro GU cards:

http://s1265.photobucket.com/user/ForLoveOfTheGame13/media/1_zpsdzcezpa2.jpg.html
http://s1265.photobucket.com/user/ForLoveOfTheGame13/media/2_zpsz9vrfqbo.jpg.html

I don't think they'll be good enough.

So then I thought maybe I should go with my favorite player of all-time on my favorite brand:

http://s1265.photobucket.com/user/ForLoveOfTheGame13/media/3_zpspopfukfg.jpg.html

I just don't think GU is going to cut it though, so maybe an auto of one of the new St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame inductees:

http://s1265.photobucket.com/user/ForLoveOfTheGame13/media/4_zps0qc7sgqa.jpg.html

But I just don't think that would be truly appreciated by anyone who isn't a Cardinals fan....you can't please everyone so I'll just work on pleasing myself.

I have to go with an auto of my favorite current Cardinals player on my favorite brand:

Can't say I got this myself as the only in person autos I've ever gotten was Leo Nomollini (sp) on a wrestling magazine when he was the promoter of AWA wrestling in SF. However, I have plenty of in person autos from a collection I purchased from a "busty" female collector. She says that was her biggest asset in getting players to sign!

Of the three, I choose lance alworth
