Collector Zone _ Hobby Talk _ What do you enjoy the most about this hobby?

Posted by: ffman Jan 21 2008, 11:51 AM

I saw a similar topic on a different board, and I'm eager to hear responses from fellow TCCers.

What do you enjoy the most about this hobby?

For me, it's the thrill of getting a nice pack pull and interacting with other collectors.

Posted by: nameant Jan 21 2008, 11:55 AM

Well, I love the trading part of it. Interacting with generous members who WANT to help your collection and being able to contribute to other people's collections is great. It just gives me a good feeling.

Like you said, the thrill of pulling something you want is great as well.

I dunno exactly what it is about the hobby, I just love collecting cards. I have since I was a child.

Being able to swap junk I don't care for, for other junk I do care for. laugh.gif

These days it seems that what I'm looking for is like a treasure hunt.
So when I find it I get a most excellent feeling.

5. Going thru a box of commons from 04-05 and finding 3 Carey Price rookies!

3. Trading for the exact card I wanted no matter what the cost!

2. Completing a set!

and the number 1 reason I love this hobby..

It is a way to "touch" my great passion for sports and interact with a community of similar minded individuals. It is my #1 leisure time activity.. kind of my "Calgon take me away moment" ! rolleyes.gif wink.gif

Going thru my old "higher value" box and finding guys that not worth the $90 a ton recycle rate for cardboard laugh.gif Marinovich and the like, but brings back the old days, and keeps me in perspective when others are chasing "who's hot" at this current time frame, hindsight always 20/20.

But seriously

1. I enjoy pulling a sweet card out of a pack or box, makes me feel like a kid again or in some cases like I won on a lottery ticket. Like when I pull an AU, even if it's not a current hot player or when I pull a sweet looking GU card (those RPMs are sweet, not sure what it is about them but they like eye candy to me laugh.gif )

2. Love this site as I can trade for players I want for players I don't want (or in some cases players I never heard of that someone wants for vice versa).

3. The feeling of an "extended family" that TCC has given me, that adds to the hobby for me (I probably wouldn't have got back into the hobby if I hadn't found this site).

4. Having a closet of cards that I can spend hours getting lost in and still not have any idea what I really have in there, though got some of the listed RCs pulled out of my duplicate boxes in FB over the last few weeks, found a few over 20BV so that was just like a pack pull with those smile.gif (blast from the past)

Posted by: Daze_fan Jan 21 2008, 06:23 PM

I honestly like nothing in this hobby anymore.

The overpriced garbage the companies put out now.
The Asinine people that think they are better than you because of what they have.
People who use Gimmick words now, I.E "hit", "Come Strong"
Seeing a post from someon 2 minutes after you posted saying they did'nt see anythign they could use, when it's obvious they did'nt look at your bucket or site.
The back stabbing that happenes alot more than everyone will admit too.
Someone that thinks because a card is older than them its gotta be worth a ton.
People who complain that GU are junk, but only want those in return.

Not to sound like a whinner or bitter, but the hobby stinks, and is just gonna get worse.
Hopefully I can finish the few sets a have to do and get out.

5.Getting That Great Pakc Pull!
4.Using Some Christmas And Birthday money to buy boxes or packs.
3. I LOVE being on TCC!
2.Helping People With there Collections
1.Being able to go to another persons house and look at and trade for there cards Like Me and ffman do.

Oh and Helping a Smaller Child get into the Hobby, Like ffman Did with me and Like me and ffman did with one of our little friends, i gave him an auto and a GU, and ffman Gave him an auto and GU, he is like 10 or 11, and as ffmans Mom Says, "Yall Created a Monster" laugh.gif

2- Trading, and discussing the hobby on TCC.

The 5 best pieces of hobby advice I was given:
1. Collect with a specific focus in mind; it would help more in building a meaningful collection and prevent meaningless clutter.
2. If you are after a value-only collection and aesthetics are secondary, then it would be prudent to only go after the higher-dollar cards.
3. Do your own research (e.g. I see a trend that the sticker AU is becoming more commonplace than the on-card AU)
4. Never tell everything you know.

Things I enjoy about this hobby:

1) Watching a father pass his love of sports on to his son or daughter and tell them about the good 'ol days of sports as they gaze into my vintage showcase at the shop.

2)Watching customers bust packs and get a great pull that makes them happy.

3)Meeting all the great folks here on TCC that share my love of sports and who have taught me that people still exist that collect because they love it and not because they stand to profit from it.

Posted by: ffman Jan 22 2008, 03:32 PM

Other things I enjoy:

1. Watching other collectors acquire a card they really enjoy and appreciate, either through trading or a box/pack.

2. Helping another collector expand his collection.

For me I like this hobby for a number of reasons:
1. You get to spend more time looking at, and talking about sport's.
2. The thrill and excitment when you find a card up here on TCC or on ebay you've been looking for, for ages.
3. The satisfaction of completing a set.
4. Meeting some great people.

What I enjoy about the hobby is....

I think I found a possible future trend (something that is getting rarer as time goes on) but no one seems to be catching on because there's a LOT of stuff I disdain out there, keeping the competition busy because they do not or cannot differentiate. smile.gif

For my hobby of game used memorabilia, what I enjoy most about it is the fact that you can simply get that piece of the game in your hands, PLUS fakes are harder to come by now. Wayyyy back then, there were Score Board jerseys which were made to have Set tags just like major league jerseys, and nobody knew if the jersey they had was game used or a replica scoreboard. Now, we have all these marketing companies so we can get game used direct from the players, plus there's MLB authentication, Steiner, MeiGray, etc.

Also, I LOVE photomatches. I'm known on another website as the "photomatch king" (as they say) since I've been able to find photomatches for my memorabilia from the most smallest things like loose stitches and tiny itty bitty marks. I'm very specific with my photomatches. ###### I love this hobby biggrin.gif

I love this hobby for many different reasons. Off the top of my head, here are a few:

1) It's something I can enjoy with my wife. She loves opening packs as much as I do smile.gif

2) Meeting different people from all over the world. I always think it's pretty amazing that pieces of cardboard can help form friendships!

3) I love the fact that there are so many beautiful cards out there. Ain't it grand to be like a kid in a candy store? biggrin.gif

4) Helping other people with their collections/cards they need. One of the greatest thrills is seeing someone else really appreciate a card that I myself might not really appreciate.

5) Tracking down a hard-to-find card!

Posted by: autocut Apr 27 2008, 01:10 PM

The part I liked about the hobby was finding "true" rare cards that had incorrect release information. I was never on bandwagons, so to find these true gems were always fun. Very, very low supply, no demand as no one knew about them.

Posted by: sschind May 22 2008, 03:15 PM

My first response to the question was "not much" and I felt like I could make a much larger contribution to the "what don't you like about this hobby" thread. As I was reading through the posts in this thread however, I realized that my initial "not much" response was not in answer to the "What do you enjoy the most about this hobby?" question but rather was more of an appropriate answer to a more specific question such as "what do like most about what this hobby has become"

A little background if you will permit, and an advanced warning that this will get a bit long. It's a slow day and this is my first venture back to a card collecting site in about a year so I have a lot of things to say. You have been warned. log out now or hold your tongue later.

I started collecting Green Bay Packer cards probably not quite 20 years ago. My first trip to a card shop came when I was in my early 20s. I had alway been a Packers fan and I had a few odds and ends laying around but not much in the way of cards. I went into a card shop just to check it out an I got hooked. My first few visits were spent splitting my time between admiring the new Packer inserts that were selling for outrageous amounts of money in the case and going through the guys nickel box for commons. After a few weeks I had depleted those nickel boxes of cards that I needed and I moved on up to the quarter box. After a couple of years the 50 cent and dollar boxes eventually fell victim to my relentless pursuit of all cards cheap relating to the Packers. Remember, 20 years ago a buck could still buy you a decent looking card and not simply because they had been overproduced ad nauseum.

That's when I started buying packs. My reasoning was that if I pulled a decent Packers insert great, I would keep it, if I got an insert of some other stud it was almost like pulling my favorite player because I could always trade it. At that time Favre, Marino, and Smith were all booking for the same so a 20 dollar Emmitt Smith insert was the same to me as a 20 dollar Favre. All I had to do was find someone with the 20 dollar Favre who wanted the 20 dollar Smith. Enter usenet newsgroups and rec.collecting. whatever it was called. I made lots of trades and built up my collection, and had a lot of fun. Soon the packs turned to boxes and I was sitting there with team lots of hundreds of cards that I had no interest in. Usenet to the rescue again. Trading team lots became my thing and again I had lots of fun my and my Packers collection grew and grew. What also started growing was the box prices, and the strict attention to "book value" when it came to trades. It was no longer acceptable to trade my 500 Bears cards for your 500 Packers cards. Everyone wanted to know the player breakdowns and the number of inserts etc etc. Then they would come back with comment like my lot books for $20.00 more than yours so I will pull out a couple of the inserts to make it even. Thats fine as far as it goes but it was getting that so a mixed lot of 500 Packers commons might only net me 2 or 3 cards that I needed and the few inserts that were being pulled were the ones I really needed.

I really started to get disheartened by the whole thing and was cutting back when the whole autograph thing started up big time. Autographs never meant anything to me. As far as I was concerned if you didn't get the autograph in person what was the point and I couldn't think of a single person that I would have waited more than 2 minutes to have sign a piece of cardboard for me. Game used was next and then ultra low count parallel sets and ultra high prices to go along with them. I quit completely for about 5 years. I started up again about 5 or 6 years ago but found that everything I enjoyed about the hobby back then was even rarer now than when I quit and the things that made me quit were even more rampant. I did do a quite a bit of buying of Packers lots on Ebay and did build my, by now seriously lagging, Packers collection back up to where most of the base cards and low end inserts were now safely tucked into their respective 9 pocket holders in their appropriate binders. However, after a couple of years of trying to trade my low end cards for other low end cards that I still needed I found that no one was interested in them any more. I was not one of those who tried to trade my three 1995 one per pack inserts for a brand new 1 per box game used. I was realistic in what I was looking for but it seems like there was no one interested in the low end cards any more. So I quit again.

The Favre race to 420 has once again renewed my interest. In watching Ebay I see that most of the cards can be had for about $1.00 $1.50 each. That is a doable thing for me and I may try to go for the set. I clicked on my old link here and this is one of the first threads I found. After a very long and probably not so mesmerizing post here we are. What do I like most about his hobby. Most of them have already been mentioned. Finding that one particular card that you have been really searching for and finding it in a box of commons for that matter. Finding the only card ever made of that one player that only played for one season as a #4 wide receiver. Getting the new team set of whatever brand when a team set was really a team set and you didn't have to pay extra for the rookies. Getting that last card to fill your 1976 wonder bread team set. The list really does go on. The two things that I like most about the hobby though are number 1, seeing posts from people in this thread who haven't forgotten what it was like. And # 2 seeing my 7 year old nephew's face light up when he opens a cheap pack and pulls a common of Devin Hester or Brian Urlacher or Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. I've been buying packs again just for him and I am dreading the day when he picks up his first Beckett. Until then, I will try to enjoy the hobby again for what it has meant to me and the heck with what everyone else thinks.

If you are still reading I think you will know exactly what I am talking about and I wish you all the best in your all collecting endeavors.

I quoted Cody's message because it was shorter, but I also agree with the things posted. Even though I started collecting last year, I notice that almost no one collects because they like a player, the BV issue pops almost inmediately when trying to trade. I must admit that sometimes I ask for it, but it's just to make sure I'm not scamming the other trader.

sschind,

Haven't seen your snake avatar in a LOOOONNNNGGGGGGG while, glad you are back...trading "low end" stuff is VERY hard nowadays...the hobby does have it's way of turning people off especially with the prices!!!

Ease on back and enjoy the hobby once again!

I enjoy the fact that if you're collecting for enjoyment that you can actually enjoy it again! That sounds odd right? Let me explain:

When I was a kid I so wanted three cards: the Score Bo Jackson FB/BB, a Dale Murphy rookie and the infamous Billy Ripken obscenity card. Tha amount of money to get them seemed astronomical then!

I now own all versions of the Ripken, two Murphs and about 20 Jackson FB/BB cards. I might have $100 in all of them laugh.gif For me it's a really fun and affordable way to remember the simpler times.

So what are you going to give me? smile.gif

Sorry, thats all I ever think of whenever I see that line. "its better to give than receive"

The freebies are nice for those just getting started but once your collection has grown I think it is fun to give a little bit back to others who are just starting out.

I remember back when I started collecting breweriana. I was about 12 and I was after anything and everything I could find that had a beer name on it. There was this older guy at a swap that must have given me about $100.00 worth of junk. I doubt anything was worth over a $1.00 but I was the happiest kid at the show. I organized a bunch of that stuff into a large (about 3'x3') picture frame type display that had probably 60 or 70 pieces on it and it hung on my bedroom wall for about 5 years. Then I started to concentrate on a few local breweries and the frame was relegated to a closet for another 4 or 5 years. I was doing some house cleaning and decided I need more room so it had to go. A friend of mine had a kid (who was about 12 years old) who was just getting started collecting and I gave him the frame. Just like me, he was happy as a clam. About 5 years later I went to a guys house to pick up a few items I had bought and I see the frame hanging on the wall. Turns out his kid was just getting into the beer stuff as well and this guy Jake had given it to him. Thats about 15 years and 3 young kids who received a ton of happiness over a bunch of worthless trinkets all because one old man took it upon himself to be generous to a wide eyed kid at his first swap. I saw the dad of the last known owner of the frame about 3 years ago and asked if his kid still had the frame. He said that he didn't and that he didn't know what happened to it. I imagine a few of the pieces had gained a little value and someone tore it apart to get at them. Either that or it all continued to be worthless junk and someone decided to throw it away. However, I like to think that somewhere some young kid is just getting started in the hobby and its hanging on his wall because some old guy just gave it to him. Of course any 12 year old getting started in the breweriana hobby today would probably spark an investigation of the parents by social services but thats the way things have changed.

That's my little hallmark moment. I know it doesn't have anything to do with this hobby but the principle is the same. Get kids hooked early and hopefully they are hooked for life.

Example, someone is getting in a Brady Quinn jumbo Auto/GU pull out from 07 Gridiron Gear, and they're selling it to me for $75 DLVD, when usually, those cards get listed on eBay with a BIN price of $120+.

Off the top of the dome, in no particular order:

1. On-card autographs are still in circulation.
2. The generosity of other collectors.
3. The interaction between collectors from different parts of the world.
4. A deeper appreciation for the sport and the athletes that play(ed) the game.

Posted by: heynetboy May 24 2009, 10:18 PM

What I enjoy the most is how autographs have become so common place that you can pretty much afford any auto card of a player other than the big ones like Ruth & Cobb. I for one love that the manufactures have done autographs of lesser known players that other wise woud be hard to get because the don' t do shows.

I also love how most collectors are ignoring 90's inserts. This has led me to coming to close to completing several sets that I may have never been able to otherwise.

Out of the blue someone just saying - "Hey send me your address and I'll send that card out to you just because you want it."

Particularly nice when the postage is going to outweigh what the card would sell for, even when you just can't find it anywhere locally.

Finally finding that shop where the owner actually does trade. ohmy.gif cool.gif And walking out of the shop spending $0, because everything you picked out that you wanted -- he just took the stuff you brought in for equal trade, and it actually seemed fair.

I still haven't found the show where that happens, but I continue to hold out hope that one day that will happen. smile.gif
