I wrote a few weeks ago about my lifelong passion of collecting sports memorabilia, especially baseball cards. Though the hobby has changed in leaps and bounds since my younger days, it still holds a fascination to me that is sometimes difficult to explain, especially to my wife. She doesn't understand the numerous piles of small pieces of cardboard stashed away in various parts of the house.
My collecting tendencies end to go in cycles. As a youngster, I was a big fan of the Cincinnati Reds, the Dallas Cowboys, and the New York Knicks. So most of my collecting centered around those three teams. Roger Staubach of the Cowboys was my idol then (and still is, if a 49-year old can have an idol), so I grabbed up everything I could with his picture or name on it. One of my prized possessions is his father's business card as he was a salesman who often visited my parents' business.
My father was smart enough to realize in the 1970's that the baseball card industry had the potential for future growth. I guess it was his sharp business sense. He encouraged me, and paid for, additions to my collections by the name of Robinson, Kluszewski, Campanella, Aaron, Mays, Banks, Clemente, to name just a few. I was never in it to sell, though Ebay has changed that philosophy recently.
