An interesting (maybe) story regarding those Pee-knuckle cards in a can. I collect Packers cards and several years ago I came across a set of cards featuring the Packers and cowboys called "Showdown in Titletown" It was an interesting set and cheap (my favorite kind) so I bought it for the Packers half and sent the cowboys cards out a year or so ago to a cowboys collector. A few weeks ago I was at our local flea market and this guy had about a two dozen of the Pinnacle inside Showdown in Titletown cans. I bought one for $3.00 just to have the unopened can. I knew they were a score product but never knew they were from the PI collection. Not worth a lot but now I have the can and the cards to display.

The guy had no idea what they were so I suggested that if he opened one can and actually showed people what was inside he may sell a few more cans. I don't know if he took my advice or not. I also don't know if the complete set (22 cards) were in each can or if you had to build it like any other pack.

Keep em coming. If our customers had any idea what we were saying about them behind their backs they would never return. It may seem mean but it's all in fun and they make it soooooooo easy.

Oh, and I'm guessing from your last few posts that Danny was successfully located?

As someone who would have absolutely no interest in either card I would rather have the Bradford.

So I setup at my first card show and it was a great experience..

Also, I was sitting down in the beginning and decided to stand up. Once I stood up, people started flocking to the table and wanting to buy.

I don't even know why I bother making suggestions if people aren't going to take them to heart. Didn't I tell you not to sit down. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif Just kidding folks its a little joke.

Glad you had a good time. To me its one of the best parts of any hobby. I've sold at card shows, antique shows, breweriana shows, fish shows, reptile shows and a few flea markets and not much beats the interaction with like minded hobbyists I'd do it every weekend if I could (and I didn't have to work during the week because face it, everyone needs a day or two off now and then)

love dickering with other dealers..

Honestly its one of the things I hate most. Most of them want you to drop your price so they can take it back to their table and sell it for the same price as you had it priced at originally or even more. What's even worse is many of them expect it. I can't count how many times I've had other dealers ask me what my "vendor discount" was. I'd much rather give a customer a 20% discount on a card for his PC than give a dealer a 20% discount so he can make more money off of it.

If its the end of the show I can see it as some people would rather deal than take stuff home but before the show even starts... don't ask.

here is a link to thread that is a couple of years old but the info is still appropriate. My first (long) post to the thread is advice for shows in general and has no specific card show advice but it still may help.

It's not just at the shop that I get some "interesting" responses. As with any small business, I try to take advantage of all forms of advertising possible. There is a local classified ad site that has a "Collectibles & Antiques" category. You can post 10 free ads on the site. I usually keep a few ads on the site just to keep my name out there locally. This site has led to some sales for me over the years it has also led to some head scratching replies like the ones below.

I received the following 2 messages this morning both from the same person. They have not been altered or corrected in any way. What you see is what I got.....

AD #1: http://www.golsn.com/listings/collectibles...es/2842923.html

RESPONSE:

"hey do you have any threw duke of hazzard autographed item please let me know i would like to get this one but i do not have the 60 i could give 49 for it but i do not get paid and tell june 29 but am a big duke of hazzard fan so please let me know thank you and god bless"

AD #2 : http://www.golsn.com/listings/collectibles...es/2842937.html

"i am look for a couple pic they is super star if you have them please let me know how much and they are
Undertaker, triple h, hbk, kane, edge, and the hardy boys please let me know i am big fan of the undertaker and triple h and hbk and the hardy boys so please let me know if you have any thing"

If anyone out there is a current or former English teacher.........I apologize........your head probably just exploded.  laugh.gif

I am still trying to formulate responses to these fine inquiries. If this person shows up at the shop this weekend, you know there will be an update!  laugh.gif

I can only think of one appropriate (and one not so appropriate) response. The appropriate one would be a simple WHAT? The inappropriate one would have a couple more words attached but I will let imagination figure them out.

On a side note I never realized that Daisy Duke's head was so big compared to the rest of her body. Not that other parts of her body are small mind you. Maybe its just the hair or maybe its just that I never really looked at her head before.

Whenever I have two prices on a product and someone asks "what is the price on this one" I'll say "you can pay whichever one you want" I have yet to have anyone pay the higher price.

Live from the shop today we have a couple jewels already.

A couple youngsters poked their heads in my doorway and one of them asked, "Is everything in here a collector's item?" "Yes it sure is." I responded. "Does everything cost a lot?" the youinger of the two asked. "Not everything. I have some items that are only .25" I answered. "See I told you stupid!" the child snapped at the other one as they ran out the doorway. I'm always glad to settle friendly wagers, direct folks to the kettle corn, pork rinds, bathroom, ATM, or even help people decide which direction Danny went.

Until next time.......

I'd bet anything that the "stupid" one was Danny.

I can't confirm that it is custom made but I can say I've never heard of a 2003 Fleer Tradition 1/1 Brett Favre either. I've gone back through a couple of my older checklists (I make new ones every couple of years because I always seem to screw them up somehow) and none of them have it either. I've always taken my CL info from Beckett.

I also noticed that the numbering they did use for the mini's and the tiffany's was on the back above the name at the top of the card. I don't know why they would have changed the location for a 1/1

The item description is funny as well, If it were a 1/1 don't you think they would have pumped it up a bit rather than just saying it was found in a box of cards in the back room.

I'm guessing its a custom made card (just a regular old base with a fancy 1/1 stamp) and the seller duped someone. Whether he did the stamping or not who knows. I'm sure if you ran across a card with a 1/1 stamp on it though you would check it out before you put it up for sale wouldn't you.

I've got AJ Green on my fantasy keeper team so I guess I'd have to say him but if the Jones card had his real name instead of Julio I'd take that simply because it sounds really really funny.

Neither Sage or Press Pass is licensed by anyone, hence the lack of team logos. Even when those companies held an NCAA license, the cards were never considered true rookie cards throughout the hobby. UD has the exclusive NCAA license now and has had for a couple years. Both Panini and Topps hold an NFL license. If you are a fan of draft pick/college products, give the Leaf products a try. They are unlicensed as well but do a much better job with card design and quality over Press Pass and especially Sage.
*

Thanks, when I was writing I new the word contract was not really right but I couldn't think of license (couldn't think of press pass either.) Anyway, I'm only interested in Packers uniform or Packers logo cards so none of the college cards interest me. I'll take a college uniform card if it comes out in a month or two and says "drafted by the Packers" or something along those lines but that's about it.

what do you mean first true rookie cards? Is it because sage and the other company (can't recall the name for some reason) don't have NFL contracts?

If I were to do the trade...

I would get:

Bryce Harper Bowman Chrome Autograph RC

Bubba Starling Elite Extra Edition Redemption Autograph RC

Anthony Rendon Contenders Autograph RC

Ryan Braun Topps Museum Booklet Autograph 4 patch (one patch is the entire M logo from the brewers) /10

Tim Tebow Topps Supreme Autograph /20
He would get:

1986-87 Michael Jordan ungraded RC
*

Which would I rather have? Of all the cards listed the only one I would be interested in might be the Braun so I would have to say I'd make the trade. If it came down to money, flipping, buying, selling, what have you, I'd have to say I'd probably sell the Jordan, buy the Braun (if I really wanted it) and pocket the rest of the money. If I thought I could make more making the trade I'd probably make the trade.

Really it comes down to why you want the cards. If its for PC go with your heart, which would you rather have? I'd rather have the Braun. If its for money then... well I almost said who cares but that's a bit harsh so I guess I'll just say go with the one that will make you the most money. Which one that is I have no idea.

Bottom line, whatever you decide move on, don't beat yourself up over it by saying woulda, coulda, shoulda, a month or six down the road.

What exactly are you fighting may I ask? He said he was unhappy with the card and you said you would give him a refund. We all know what he did. Its a clear case of buyers remorse but how do you prove it. I'm not sure what ebay can or will do. If you think they will tell you to send the card back and let you keep the money I seriously doubt that will happen. They are certainly not going to let you keep them both so they will probably make you give him the refund. At best you might have ammunition to use to get the negative removed if he leaves you one. He may also get a strike against him but I doubt it. Oh, and you might be able to get the SNAD removed. If that is what you meant by fighting it I understand now, Duh, Sometimes I don't think straight. I think you should just consider yourself lucky to get the same card back and not a damaged one that he might have switched it out for.

I agree.  I wish I could say I buy more from my LCS but I don't.  They don't carry much.  They only order a couple of boxes and when they are gone that's it.  He doesn't reorder anything.  He just got in a shipment of Totally Certified and I asked when the next shipment was going to be and the answer was not going to be one.  Did the same thing with SPX couple years back.

That goes back on him then. If they don't carry what you want no one can blame you for looking elsewhere. Especially If you express an interest in a product and he says he isn't getting any more I'm not sure what more you can do.

You are absolutely right and on point.  However, I have always done business with this particular shop when I was in this area visiting.  The main reason, was to see what he had in comparison to the shop in Lubbock where I have been living for the last11 plus years.  I was here the last week of February when many of the soldiers were coming home from deployment and this shop was raking in business left and right.  In less than a month the sign was off the building and this guy is just gone.  I was hoping that he had moved to another location but that isn't the case.

I have always enjoyed going to the local shops to shoot the breeze with the owner and other collectors and have always spent money while I was there.  I'm just trying to figure out how a shop, in a military town and a local population upwards of 300,000 can just vanish at a time when it's biggest client base is just returning with money burning holes in their pockets.  I am in the car business and since the soldiers have started to return we have gone from 161 sales in January to 216 in February and we are over 200 sales this month with two days to go.

Another thing to consider is that people do close shop for reasons other than business failure. For his sake I hope that is the case.

QUOTE(THUNDER9 @ Mar 21 2012, 11:34 PM)
Not to mention the disappointment of buying a moderately priced box with a couple months allowance and pulling nothing exceptional.
*

That's the biggest letdown I have of the hobby. Not the disappointment of pulling nothing exceptional but rather the expectation that there has to be something exceptional in there in the first place. What ever happened to collecting cards of your favorite teams and players.

Its not the price of the products. There are lots of products that kids can afford. Heck, a lot of kids nowadays have more disposable income than adults. I put a $20.00 bill in my nephew's birthday card and when he opened it at the party he was very happy with it. He got $25.00 from a classmate. What a cheap uncle I am I guess. I realize that the $25.00 most likely came from the other kids parents but my point is he hauled in almost $75.00 from that party and that was not counting the cash from his two sets of grandparents. He could by boxes and packs if he wanted to.

KHarmons first two point were right on the head (though I disagree with his third as I have pointed out above) kids have too many more options and those options are much more fun.

What kids need to get into the hobby is an adult to show them what it can be like. What I mean is someone who can show them the satisfaction of completing a set or reaching a goal for a certain number of cards of their favorite player or team. Unfortunately if they do get any guidance it usually from someone bragging about how much money he can get for this or that card on ebay which set the totally wrong example to get kids interested longterm in the hobby.

When you talk to kids about cards don't bring up values or money. I got a 1/10 insert of a Bears nobody in a lot that I got for my nephew and I pointed out that there were only 10 of those made. Only 9 other people in the entire world could have that card. I didn't point out that these cards are worth more than ones that there are more of because I don't want him to get fixated on value. Well... that and because I probably only paid a buck for it anyway... but still, my point is don't focus on the value. Don't say things like "this this is only a base card" or " the only ones that are good are the numbered cards" that tells them that only certain cards have value and the object for now is to get them to believe that all cards have value.

Don't tell kids that if they complete the set it will be worth a lot of money or if they put these cards away in a safe and don't ever touch them or look at them they will pay for their college one day. Mostly because its probably a lie and lying to kids isn't usually a good thing but even more importantly kids live for today. They need immediate gratification. If they put it away for the future they will most likely forget about it.

Don't tell the kids that their cards have to be locked away in a hermetically sealed case of virtually indestructible plastic and viewed through three inches of UV proof glass Don't tell them they can only handle their cards after they have washed their hands for 17 minutes with an industrial strength disinfectant and donned three pairs of hypo allergenic latex gloves. Lose the penny sleeves. Let them handle the cards. Let them feel the cardboard. Let them touch the patch eek.gif Better yet, do it with them. Kids are hands on they want to be a part of what they are doing looking but not touching is a good thing to teach kids regarding other peoples property but it won't work with cards. Especially with younger kids.

Here is one suggestion. If you know a kid who has more than a passing interest in a particular sport or team or player but has not really showed any interest in collecting cards buy them a huge lot of cheap base. This probably works better for sports and teams than players since favorite players tend to be the ones that cost more (even for cheap stuff) and it allows for more hands on activities. Explain the different ways the cards can be sorted, by team, by player, by position, by card manufacturer by team set etc. Point out the difference in the card types. Base, parallel, insert, rookies etc. don't mention anything about current or future value. Chances are if you bought a huge lot of base there is nothing that will be of value now or in the future anyway. Telling them they may be worth money someday will do two things. It will give them unrealistic expectations about all cards which will only set them up for disappointment later on and it will take the focus off the cards and put it on money.

Most importantly get involved. Someone on another thread mentioned giving out cards for Halloween. That's a great idea. Buy a huge lot of "junk" base of your local team and make up packs. Buy a few boxes of "junk" wax and give them out.

There are a lot of things you can do but IMO one of the most important things is to not bring up the money or value side of it. If they get hooked on the hobby they will unfortunately most likely figure that out for themselves eventually anyway.

This question is for everyone including myself and may not be specific to this post but it applies for all purchase you make not just cards. My comments are also not aimed directly at anyone who has commented in this thread or others like it. They are just general comments, though if you take them heart it just may help out some of those local shops. Anyway, disclaimers finished on to the real reason for my post. The next time you are lamenting the loss of yet another local mom and pop card shop (or video store or gas station or anything) ask yourself these questions.

When was the last time I bought something from that shop?
When was the last time I bough something on line (or from another shop) that this shop carried?

If the answer to the second question is more recent than your answer to the first one you just might have had something to do with the shop closing.

Now I realize that certain circumstances come into play. Maybe the shop is far away from you? Maybe they didn't have the things you want? That's all well and good and they are legitimate reasons for buying elsewhere but if that local shop is down the block and you just bought penny sleeves and top loaders on line to save a couple of bucks you have no right to lament the closing of the shop.

Traditional retail is changing that is for sure and mom and pop shop owners have to adapt or die there is no doubt about that. However, as a retailer and a mom and pop shop owner nothing bothers me more than people claiming to be saddened by the loss of yet another mom and pop business when they are buying all their stuff from ebay and amazon.com. Don't get me wrong, money is tight these days and people have to save money. I don't begrudge anyone saving a few bucks wherever they can. Heck, I do it myself. What I don't do however is sit back and cry about how much I will miss the local shop after it closes down.

I've got customers who buy everything from me even though they know they can get it cheaper elsewhere. I appreciate these customers and I give them breaks whenever I can. I've also got customers who tell me how happy they are that I sell crickets because the next closest place is 20 miles away but they have no problem buying everything else the need to keep their lizards alive on line so they can save a few bucks.

Once again, I stress that I am not saying any of you are like this. Maybe some of you are and maybe you are not. If you support your local shop then I am sure the owner appreciates it. If not well that is your choice and the choice will get easier eventually when he closes his doors.

I don't like the idea of giving partial refunds so I understand the sellers policy and if they stick to their guns that's fine by me. I understand why people would say give him the partial refund and let him keep the card because the card will be in less demand with the damage but if its a low # and for a PC you might be surprised. I'd want it back and try to re sell it.

I would think getting all your money back would be acceptable to the buyer. They may want the card but obviously they don't want it as badly if it is damaged. I don't think the buyer should keep the card for the price he paid if he is not happy with the condition. He is entitled to some sort of refund. He is only being offered a full refund so that's what he should take if he doesn't want the card in its condition.

It sounds to me like the buyer won't have to pay return postage. "We offer Full refund only and your return postage." sounds to me like the postage will be refunded as well.

It looks to me like the seller knew the card was damaged. Why else would he have bothered to show close ups of those exact areas? He may have took the pictures in a particular way to minimize the severity of the damage and by not mentioning it it certainly looks suspicious but its hard to believe he was not aware of it. IMO all damage should be noted in the description even with a photo. Not mentioning it might indicate that the seller is trying to slip something past someone.

The buyer either didn't realize there was damage or was not expecting the damage to be as bad as it was (perhaps the damage was made worse in shipping.) It's hard to say really. I mean common sense might say just give the guy a few bucks back and be done with it but look at it from this perspective. Everyone assumes that everybody else wants their cards in mint condition to be the most valuable. That's not always the case. If it for a PC some people would prefer a less than perfect item at a reduced cost, perhaps even a greatly reduced cost, than a perfect item at a higher cost.

From a buyer standpoint I could understand asking for a partial refund. I want the card but if I had known the damage was this bad I would not have paid as much as I did. I'd pay this much so give me the rest back. Makes sense to me, but if all I was offered was a full refund and I didn't want the card in its current condition for the price I paid I would take the full refund and be happy that the seller didn't say "I posted pictures of the damaged areas so you knew what was wrong with it, its not my fault your eyes are bad. Tough luck, you are stuck with it now."

From a seller standpoint would I want one buyer to dictate the final price I get for the card? Even with damage it has value. The buyer says he will give me this much, maybe someone will give me more. Send me the card back, I'll give you all your money back that you are out and I'll try to sell the card again.

One thing I would look for if the card does go on the market again is if the seller use new pictures and changes the description. If not I'd definitely stay away from him in the future. I'm not saying he is or was trying to scam anyone since he is offering a full refund but his listing practices are a bit questionable to me.

A hit like that, of a player like him, in a product of that caliber!?!?! If they pull this mess with high profile products and players like that, what's to be said about all my Jason Campbells?!.... oh have mercy!

No kidding, I think if I was going to relieve some poor schmuck of 20+ grand I just might throw in shipping and I'd probably even insure it. Heck I might even drive it to him myself. Nice free road trip.
