Appearing at a Boston rally for Democrat gubernatorial candidate Martha Coakley on Friday, Hillary Clinton told the crowd gathered at the Park Plaza Hotel not to listen to anybody who says that “businesses create jobs.”

“Don’t let anybody tell you it’s corporations and businesses create jobs,” Clinton said.
“You know that old theory, ‘trickle-down economics,’” she continued. “That has been tried, that has failed. It has failed rather spectacularly.”

“You know, one of the things my husband says when people say ‘Well, what did you bring to Washington,’ he said, ‘Well, I brought arithmetic,’” Clinton said, which elicited loud laughs from the crowd.

I'd really love to know how I got my current job then. I guess it were by osmosis!

She is such a smart lady! She must have learned her loyalty to her her husband from Monica!

Jobs are created by those sitting on their butts with a sign begging for money. We should just cut out all of the businesses and stop trying to help them and only help the Democrats that take vacations every couple of months and do nothing for our country!

Context is an amazing thing, soundbites can be so easily manipulated and twisted so I find it quite pathetic when someone posts a soundbite with no comment on it and has clearly already passed judgement on what the person say. Here is the context if any of you are interested.

QUOTE
“Don’t let anybody tell you that raising the minimum wage will kill jobs. They always say that. I’ve been through this. My husband gave working families a raise in the 1990s. I voted to raise the minimum wage and guess what? Millions of jobs were created or paid better and more families were more secure. That’s what we want to see here, and that’s what we want to see across the country.

“And don’t let anybody tell you, that, you know, it’s corporations and businesses that create jobs. You know, that old theory, trickle-down economics. That has been tried. That has failed. That has failed rather spectacularly.

“One of the things my husband says, when people say, what did you bring to Washington? He says, well I brought arithmetic. And part of it was he demonstrated why trickle down should be consigned to the trash bin of history. More tax cuts for the top and for companies that ship jobs over seas while taxpayers and voters are stuck paying the freight just doesn’t add up. Now that kind of thinking might win you an award for outsourcing excellence, but Massachusetts can do better than that. Martha understands it. She knows you have to create jobs from everyone working together and taking the advantages of this great state and putting them to work.”

And she's right. Trick down economics doesn't work. Consumers drive the economy, not the top. Where do consumers come from? All classes, but especially the middle. In fact, the more wealth that's at the top is harmful to the economy because it reduces the number of consumers with purchasing power.

For example, a person only needs a certain amount of pillows. Pillow companies make their profit based on how many pillows they sell. A person with $10,000,000 in wealth isn't going to buy more pillows than 10 people with $1,000,000 in wealth or 20 people with $500,000 in wealth.

The economy is driven by the amount of consumers and the amount of consumers is determined by the amount of people with disposable income. Hilary is absolutely right when she says the theory of trickle down economics doesn't work.

Zimbow, you probably have your job because a company developed a product or service that customers felt was worth purchasing and had the money to purchase. Since more purchasers like the services or products of the company then the supply they had, they needed to find a way to increase the supply they provide, hence they hired you and all your co-workers. It wasn't because the CEO of your company was sitting on a pile of dough and decided he felt like hiring more people.

Not that this ridiculous comment is actually worth addressing, but no candidate who has run for any office in any political party has ever believed anything close to that or anything that resembles the idea you presented in this comment.

SO.

what came first the chicken or the egg?

since you apparently have the answer?

Let me tell you about supply and demand

One doesnt exist without the other.

Without a creation we have no world.

Conceptual if i produce an idea , a widget , we will call it, and someone buys it, and then the word spreads and I need help to create more widgets , so i hire someone to help me and pay him 1% of what a widget cost, Did not a BUSINESS create a JOB?

AND THEREby my friend why Hilary is a complete looney toon for thinking anything different! You actually answered your own question in explaining to Zimbow why he has gainful employment!

Or..

we can analyze any other conceptual idea in a capitalist society if youd like, just pose a perfect example like mine!

A concept, to creation, to supply, to demand, to .. hiring additional help!

Apparently you felt it was worth addressing or you wouldn't have wink.gif

And yes, the comment she made wasn't shown in its entirety, however, the fact still remains that no matter how much you raise the minimum wage, that DOSENT create jobs. Yes, more lazy people might get off their butts and get a job which helps the unemployment rate, but the jobs were already there.

I here people complaining about needing a job on a daily basis, but when I offer them one, the say no because there isn't enough money or they don't want to do this kind of work. Lack of jobs isn't the problem, lazy people getting paid unemployment and refusing to take whats available is.

When I was jobless and homeless, I never turned down a job, no matter how small it was or how little I was getting paid. But yet there are families that would rather sit and take handouts than accept a job.

Hillary Clinton already ran this country for 8 years, time to get some new blood. Have you listened to any of her speeches?

Yes, but you can create the greatest product in the world and if there isn't the distribution of wealth necessary to create enough demand to sustain the business then the business will fail.

I will definitely agree that the minimum wage isn't the biggest problem right now. I think we need a president willing to take a stronger stance on big business and Wall Street (something President Obama hasn't done and something Hillary Clinton definitely won't do).

But regardless, your initial comment was inane and is honestly an example of why their is so much gridlock in politics these days. Painting any group of people or any political party as anything (especially so extreme) is detrimental to society and everything democracy stands for. How can compromise be had when you paint your "partner across the aisle" in such an extreme way. I don't mean to call you specifically out for it, because unfortunately it's something that's rampant in society these days. Politics have become to much of a sport and ofcourse the media also carries plenty of responsibility for it as well.

How doesn't that make sense to you? Businesses only thrive in countries with developed economies where wealth is spread out. You don't see Apple trying to sell phones in some of the poorer countries in Latin America and Africa. Why? Because there aren't enough consumers. Sure you have the elite in those countries, but there aren't enough of them to buy enough phones for it to be worth Apple's while.

Obviously America is in a much different state than poorer Latin American and African countries but the concept still relates. The middle class is shrinking and the lower class is getting larger. The middle class drives the economy, that's where the most "consumers" come from in a thriving economy. Less consumers lead to less money in the economy which leads to less businesses succeeding which leads to less jobs which leads to less consumers. It's a circle THAT IS Economics 101. Now we may disagree on where the circle "starts" and that's fine, we can have a discussion about it. But come on, comments like that are so unnecessary and not even relevant to a discussion. I know discussions have been hard to come by on this site in recent years but can we atleast be respectful to each other? Good grief.

I will definitely agree with you that Washington right now (House, Senate, White House, even the Supreme Court) has just done an absolutely horrendous job in the last 15 years or so. I definitely am with you on that one and unfortunately it just doesn't seem to be getting any better.

Really? dont be so uninformed. Apple sells everywhere. they are a global market. Im sure there are just as many idiots in Africa and latin America that buy Iphones. Businesses thrive everywhere! On a global perspective , latin america and Africa , are least populated due to climate and terrain but believ me in thriving populous' like johannesberg, cairo, nairobi, and mexico City, apple probably has a bigger share than any other provider.

Obviously America is in a much different state than poorer Latin American and African countries but the concept still relates. The middle class is shrinking and the lower class is getting larger. The middle class drives the economy, that's where the most "consumers" come from in a thriving economy. I know discussions have been hard to come by on this site in recent years but can we atleast be respectful to each other? Good grief.

And if those middle class and lower class employees do not have jobs, then they resort to crime correct? ######. The economy has changed because our feerless leaders in Washington tried "Stimulus" which only lined the pockets of their constituents , not us the people. And then because of those stimulus and a lack of oversight , the government got it self in deeper debt, thereby having to take a reactionary response to taxes and more cuts to welfare etc etc etc..

If our idjits that run Washington DC would butt out of the private sector that is capitalism in its core, then and only then will our economy "correct" itself and capitalism will thrive.

You seem jealous that some folks have more than you? And jealousy is 1 of the 7 deadly sins! I say those "wealthier folks" probably earned their wealth by the sweat of their brow or their brains. i suggest that you stop worrying about what others have and how unfair it is and put your nose to the grindstone and work for what you want .

Thats what i did, that is how i was raised.

But in closing , so that i am not accused of making rude or obnoxious comments.

Hilary is just another "wealthy" idiot who doesnt have a clue and never "worked" a day in her life. Why anyone in this world would listen to this bag of hot air is beyond me. I find all politicians worthless , they are not even a necesary evil , except , we the people, have them forced into our psyche by the media. Some of us hinge on every word they say. Businesses create jobs , without them we are all on our own. If a man gets wealthy cause he takes a risk and starts a business then good for him! And if he hires 20 people and feeds 20 families cause he took that risk then he gets a star from me!

As far as what is wrong with "big government" I say send them all packing and lets get some real leaders in washington , set some 1 term limits, get rid of the PAC and lobbyists and get focused on "we the people"!

I have to agree with Steve here. I have traveled the world and been to some nasty places. I saw more Iphones in Thailand (poor country) than you see in the US! Don't get me started on Nigeria! The Iraqis, not only do they have some of the best phones out there, but I visited an Apple store in downtown Baghdad during the peak of OIF! Colonel Walid, our Iraqi Police Chief in Anbar, had a MacBook computer, Iphone, and an Ipad with him at every meeting.

That aside, businesses thrive anywhere! It depends on the business. You can take the poorest county in the world and still find thriving businesses! For instance, a farm or ranch is considered a business is it not? Especially a larger one that produces food for an area? My uncles farm employs 8 people and provides foods for at least 10 different markets!
