1. Reach at least 200 Different non 1/1's Yamon Figurs Cards. Would love to hit 250 if possible.
2. Add at least 2 more 1/1's to my Yamon Figurs collection.
3. Reach 100 Indians Gu/auto and add 1 1/1 to that collection.
Please go ahead and post your own.

I've cut back on a lot of card activity but here's three goals:

Add as many new white sox cards as possible(currently 12322)
Add some more Nellie Fox cards (currently 94)
Add to my 1955 Bowmans (currently 187/320)
Perhaps start a 2004 Bowman Heritage set.

I occasionally collect coins - usually anything I get from my grandfather.

I also have a small pocket knife collection, which was started from both grandfathers on both sides of my family.  My mother contributes to the collection now, usually with one new piece as one of my Christmas gifts.

Aren't grandparents great. When I was six my gramps give me a roll of buffalo nickels. Most were wore off but I didn't care, I started collecting them that very day, still got em. He's gone on but I still remember.

Matchcovers (2000 +different)
N guage Model Railroad (strictly armchair)
Science Fiction (especially Analog Science Fiction Science Fact)

Most on a backburner with bb cards in first. My wife says if I collect much more we will have to get a bigger place.

QUOTE(parker95 @ Jul 26 2009, 10:55 AM)
Why would anyone buy this?  If a seller is guaranteeing a specific card in a pack, tells you the type of card and guarantees it, it is obvious to me that the seller has already opened the pack and has resealed it:

GUARANTEED PACK

I mean if you really think about it, why would a seller guarantee a specific type of card without knowing what is inside?  I can only imagine what the seller would think if the person who buys the pack emails the seller and says that the guaranteed card was not inside.  Do you think he would refund his money?  No way, because he already knows what is inside that pack!

I hate it when people search packs!  To me, it is no different than buying a scratch off lottery ticket with no chance of getting a higher dollar prize.

What are your thoughts?

Craig in Texas

What Boston5761 says: Pack searching; mainly by weight. I noticed he doesn't specially guarantee a specific card only the chance of pulling one. He's knows most probably a certain kind of pack is there that may contain the card mentioned.

Do I like these type of auctions? Nope, too close to lottery's and grab bags and such for me.

QUOTE(marcus42 @ Jul 20 2009, 08:42 PM)
That's a great memory, Richard! and Richard smile.gif

Mine is a no doubter...

I can't remember the exact day, but it was a summer day and I used to visit my Granma's once every couple of weeks in the summer and I'd stay the night with my siblings. Well she would usually take us out to lunch or dinner when we went over and this one particular day we went to Target after lunch. I saw some 2002 Donruss Classics baseball sitting on the shelf. I used to be a baseball collector, but now I focus more on football. Ok back to the story, I got like 4 packs of classics and a couple of packs of something else. Caught up with my Granma and we checked out and were on our way home.

See my parents didn't mind me collecting, but they would never really fund my hobby, my Granma spoiled me with cards. I only really got to bust packs when I was with her, and she loved to share it with me. So I'm ripping the packs open on the way back to my grandparents house, and I wasn't too knowledgeable so I didn't really know about the Game Used craze and such, I just wanted base cards of Indians or Ken Griffey Jr.

I get to my last pack, and saw something that was definitely not a decoy...out pops a jersey card of my all time favorite player, Jim Thome!
I hollered so loud my granma freaked out! The smile I had made my Granma's day and my own. Though I don't collect baseball much anymore, and my Granma has passed away (about 6 years ago), this card brings a smile to my face each time I see it.

Jim Thome is one heck of a hitter and an all round great guy too.
Washburn is a small farm town (1000) about 30 miles northeast of Peoria,
Thome's home town. I live in Normal, about 40 miles east of Peoria,
so he's from my neck of the woods.

Reply with the first thing that comes to mind after reading the following sentence:

What is the most specific memory you have regarding this hobby?

I'll go first. Setting an example, and all.

I was at a local card show with my father. It was 1996 or 1997, and I had yearned for a box of 96/97 Bowman's Best basketball. Sadly, all were out of my price range ($20 from a month of allowance savings). So, we walked around, and I found nothing I wanted... Until we came to a complete base set of 96/97 Bowman's Best. Now, back then, I loved building sets. I prided myself on building mint-condition sets. The price of the Bowman's Best set? One-hundred smackaroos. Ouch. Father and I began leaving, and he told me to wait for him on this bench while he went to the restroom. Several minutes later and he came back with the set in his hands. I was the happiest kid that day, and that's the most prominent memory I have of my time in this hobby.

Your turn biggrin.gif Keep it to one memory: the most memorable one, of course.

Standing outside of the local newspaper-candy-soda store in Washburn Illinois in Summer of 1955 and opening a 5c (one half of my allowance as a 11 year old) pack of 1955 Bowman. I got a great big piece of gum and 9 cards the second one being Nellie Fox, my favorite player for my favorite team. I was one happy kid. I've Liked baseball cards ever since although in my late teens it was guitars, pool cues and gals until Uncle caught up with me. Started up again with my son in 1985 and have been fooling around more or less ever since.

Great post, when I was a young fella I learned one thing from my dad, and that's honesty was the one thing that no one could take from you but was also the one thing you could throw away. I guess it boils down to conscience and empathy while treating others as you would be treated.

QUOTE(mjda @ Jul 13 2009, 08:32 PM)
Earlier today I was browsing Andrew's (sahetu) blog and read his article on 2009 Donruss Americana. I actually didn't even know they made blasters of this product, but after reading his article I knew I had to get one. So, like the addict I am, I went to the nearest Walmart this evening (about 10 minutes ago actually) to see if they had any of these boxes. Luckily for me, they had 2. I assume you thought I was going to say I bought them both, then tell you what all I pulled right? Instead, I'll explain to you what I saw when looking at the boxes.

Box number 1 was already opened!! The top of the box was completely ripped off, and all cards and packaging missing. You wouldn't believe the disappointment, and sheer anger, that went through my head at the very moment I picked that box up.

Well, so much for getting 2 boxes of this stuff tonight! I guess I was just left with 1 box. At least that's what I thought!! Box number 2 was smashed to about 3/4th it's original size! Are you kidding me!! After looking at the boxes for a minute or 2, wondering who in the world would have done such a thing, I took the already opened box to the head cashier and told her that the front end guys might want to keep a better eye on their cards. I also told her about the 2nd box, and explained that she might as well get that box off the shelves too because nobody was going to buy it. Not to my surprise at all, however, she just shrugged it off like she didn't care. By the way, she didn't go get the other box off the shelf either!!

So then I noticed that they had a large box full of loose packs. I know, it's a big time no-no to buy loose packs of cards, especially at walmart. However, I wanted to open some of it just to see what it looks like. So I pulled out about 10 packs and started looking for my wife so that I could put them in the cart. On my way to find her, though, I noticed that even some of those packs were opened as well!! I immediately turned around and marched those packs right back to the box where they were found. Now, I've heard of pack searching before, but never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that someone would have actually stood there opening a full box and several packs and not have anyone say anything. When I took those packs back, I started looking in all the loose pack boxes. Yes, every single loose pack box on the shelves had packs in it that had already been opened and peaked into.

I came home empty handed tonight, unfortunately. sad.gif I really had the bug to open something up, but it was completely foiled by some loser, and terrible surveillance. Tomorrow morning, at 8am sharp, I will be making a phone call to speak to the manager of our walmart store to share this exact experience with him as I've just shared it with you. With any luck, he'll care more about what I'm saying than the head cashier did. I generally buy 1-2 (sometimes more) blaster boxes from our walmart every month, but if the conversation tomorrow doesn't go any better than the one I had with the lady tonight, I will not spend another dime on cards here at our walmart. Something has GOT to be done about this!
*

Bad business indeed. Pack searchers are the lowest of the low. If you're looking for big hits retail is a lost cause.

and as well as talking to the Walmart manager send a strongly worded email to Wally worlds on line complaint department. I had a problem at our local walmart and did just that expecting little but I had a call from the assistant manager within the hour with an apology; Apparently someone down in Arkansas monitors those complaints.

Alright, maybe I really am a geek, but I have a sports card fantasy....it involves opening what I refer to as a Masterpiece box of Donruss Classics, no base at all.....18 packs, each one with an auto, GU, and GU auto in it.  Wouldn't that be an incredible box to open?  What's your sportscard fantasy geek??
*

Fantasy? OK. Mr Peabody to loans me his wayback machine to take a trip back to Bowman's Loading dock in Philly. First stop 1953 - case of Bowman color next stop 1955 - couple cases of the TV set, then off to New York to Topps in 1952, some of those cases that were later to be dumped into the Atlantic. That would be great.

Dont' regret spending that at all, especially the time spent with my son when he was a kid at shows and such.

If I could get a graded Fox Wilson Franks dirt cheap on eBay, I'd do the happy sox fan dance around the computer and be a pretty happy camper. I don't think there are many 1954 Wilson Franks packages around in fact I doubt any exist.

.... serial-numbered cards below 10,000.

And there were only insert/chase cards.....

What would you be collecting? I already have my answer, but would like to hear others first.

Pretty much the same as I do now, team collector of White Sox cards especially Fox. Secondarily, 1955 Bowman and 2004 Bowman Heritage. I have some the listed cards in my collection but do I emphasize them? Nope, never have.

Click on the about link on the blog.

It looks like a former Beckett employee is highly displeased with the way
the current owners are operating, and that's putting it mildly.

Beckett certainly has changed the mags and internet sites, we'll see if they succeed, I for a fact don't like either much nowadays.

Ive never gotten infected on photobucket and I've used it almost every day with no problems. but I keep my firefox, java, avg and zone alarm updated religiously.

The bad guys continually redo their efforts to exploit any and all vulnerabilities they can find, and I think that Photobucket has problems with some of their ads being vulnerable and could be better with their vigilance. I can understand the OP has a valid complaint.

Well the over 59 is now 24, just updated my profile.
I'm 65, collected back in the fifties as a kid, then started up again with my son (then aged 6) in 1987 and still at it. It's a great hobby and I agree if I wasn't retired I probably would not have as much time to mess around with it.

Here a few of my problems with some of the trends in collecting of modern cards:

1. MLB for limiting the number of licenses while allowing a deluge of sets and parallels from the two remaining. Result: lowering of quality and rise in cost

2. Speculation rather than collecting Result: Abandonment of collecting in favor of profit. However, in essence that profit is far less than expected. In other words an economic bubble that will in time seriously damage the hobby.

3. The manufactures making sets of hundreds to thousands of parallels of basically the same card.
Result: Player collectors in dire straits , with completion a thing of the past.

4. Cost of boxes and packs forcing kids away from the hobby Result; far fewer kids in the hobby ultimately damaging the hobby.

5. High cost of set collecting, making it a endangered species Result: Affordable set completion almost a thing of the past. Sad.
