The only real strategy I can give you is TIMING. Thats pretty much everything with this test and you have to move fast. If you do not know how to do a problem move on either fill in an answer or come back if you have time and try to work the problem out
make sure you answer questions even if you dont know the answer its not the sat so you dont get extra points taken off. eat a good breakfast, because its a long test, and you will get hungry during it.

In the writing section make sure you answer all the questions in your paper that they are looking for. Make sure you have the amount of paragraphs that you should have. make sure that you have everything that the graders are looking for. And you probably know to answer the question which ever you ahve the most points for you dont have to agree with it, and it will allow you to get a better score as well.

i got a 25 everytime I took it which was twice!

I still got 4 full paid scholarship offers for academics USC, memphis and two smaller schools!

I do think its important but dont think its as important as some counselors make it out to be.

Timing is everything, Pace yourself! The protocol for taking the test is just as important as the answers themselves!

I graduated HS in 2005 and I don't recall taking a writing portion (may i did??). I scored a 29, but my SAT was not that good. Don't worry over it, anxiety will do more damage on test day than a lack of knowledge. One test won't make or break your college destination-

Uh oh, I see some score bragging starting to happen. wink.gif My best advice is to practice and study the math. I presume everything except the writing is still about the same as when last took it(2002 or 2003) and the reading, English, and science are all mostly about reading quickly and comprehending what you read. The math, though, can allow you to increase your score the "easiest". The last time I took it I didn't study for anything but the math, I increased that score by 5 points which brought my overall up a full point by itself. Depending on your high school, there may be some problems that you haven't had any experience with, so it may be a good idea to get a practice book and work diligently on the type of problems you don't already know. Aside from that, relax. Stressing too much can easily be detrimental to your score. Don't study too much the night before, a little refresher is all you need at that point. Chill out and get a good nights' sleep. If you don't know the answer skip it and come back. If you still don't know, don't agonize over it, it just wastes time. Make your best guess and move on, come back to it at the end if you finish everything else and still have time. Last, but not least, believe in the test, and ace yourself! cool.gif

Don't worry, you'll be fine. Concentration is key, make sure to think things through (first answer that comes to mind is generally the best answer).

Make sure to practice over the weekend so that you aren't rusty and are ready to go. This is a very important test, so might as well put forward your best effort.

Good luck!

As a high school senior, I HIGHLY recommend taking the SAT as well. Standardized tests probably won't break you for a college decision, but they could make you. Honestly, it's just about repetition and practice. The more practice tests you take the better. I suggest a big SAT book. Good luck Alex!

I find these tests quite frustrating. I usually psyched myself out. I loved the essay section as it was my strength.

I'd definitely study by taking the practice tests just to familiarize yourself with what it will be like. I'd say the biggest part is relaxing and focusing on time when taking it. Just keep in mind the ACT/SAT isn't the only thing colleges look at on applications. They look for whole package!

Good luck and nice to see you again, Alex. smile.gif

Thanks for the extra advice guys,
Ive taken a ACT prep class and we took the ACT
from 5 or 6 years back and I scored a 26, with a 29 on the math
so it was nice to see what the test was going to be about in general.
Im not looking forward to the english/reading sections but hopefully
some reviewing over the weekend helps out... Nice to see you all again

Best of luck! Just wake up early to keep your normal routine going. Your body and mind knows when there's a change in the midst, so keep it regular. What I mean by that is...

Do you go jogging before starting your day? Eat a hearty breakfast? Take a shower?

If so, do those things! Don't change anything throughout your day. The ACT is just something you're doing that day and isn't something that should hamper your routine.

Your mind will react accordingly, and the rest will fall into place.

best of luck to you in the ACT first off!

Secondly, make sure to get a lot of sleep, that is most important, and have a healthy breakfast, make sure you have the energy to think.

Thirdly, don't stress about it too much, it'll just make you over think.

I ended up doing all of those and got a 29, so it worked out well

lol, i took my act's 3 minutes away from the national act headquarters lol, in Iowa City. In fact i drove by it going to the test. by the way, great improvements can be made, i went up 6 whole points from a 20 to a 26.

My only advice would be time management. I think I ran a little low on the science portion of the exam.

Good luck! I thought I did horrible but did much better than expected (30).
