Collector Zone _ Everything Else _ Ordered a new desktop computer!

Posted by: bob_TCC Mar 8 2009, 04:26 PM

I'm not sure when I purchased my last desktop computer, but I believe it was about 10 years ago or longer. ohmy.gif

So, earlier today, I ordered the following desktop computer from Dell:

Studio Mini-Tower
Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q8200 (2.33 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB) w/ 4 MB cache
4 GB DDR2 SDRAM 800 MHZ- 4 X 1GB DIM M
Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 Home Premium 64-bit Edition English
640 GB Serial ATA 2 Hard Drive 7200 RPM
16X DVD+/-RW DRIVE
Dell 22" Wide (S2209WFP)
ATI Radeon HD 3450 256 MB supporting HDMI
Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio
Dell Wireless Desktop Keyboard and Mouse
Integrated Media Card Reader
Integrated 10/1000 Ethernet
ADOBE READER 9.0 MULTI- LANGUAGE
1 Year Limited Warranty and Next Business Day, Desktop

The new desktop computer is expected to arrive on Friday, 3/20/09. biggrin.gif

In addition, I'm expecting to receive a laptop from work in the next 1-2 weeks. So, I'll soon be using an upgraded laptop for work - especially when working from home each Friday.

Then, my current laptop will likely end up being used by my wife and son more - leaving the new desktop computer to be my primary computer for TCC and then the old desktop computer will be moved into the basement as part of my card storage room. Maybe I'll actually use it to list some cards on eBay! laugh.gif

I'm not sure if I can wait until the 20th though! This is going to be tough!

True! My current desktop is about 19-20 GB and my current laptop is about 37 GB.

My current deskop has 384 MB of memory and my current laptop has 512 MB of memory.

I should be flying around the site! biggrin.gif

10 years ago-----you got a squirrel running around inside your current computer for power?

Possibly. That might explain the noise that it makes at times! laugh.gif

It feels "old" having a PC with 512 MB when most new gigs have around 4 GB today. Oh well, I don't use it for gaming or high-tech applications!

Only 20? I would think 200 is a breeze for those specs laugh.gif.

Definitely a future proofed rig that will last a long, long time if the maintenance is kept up. Good call on the purchase.

I've been considering getting a new laptop and giving this one to Matt because we constantly are whining to have the laptop haha. Congrats on your new PC Bob, I take it TCC will be running VERY smoothly once you get it since you'll be able to be in 30 topics at once tongue.gif

That will be cool. Definitely better than what I'm currently on. The only computer in the house is this little Acer Aspire One. It's a mini. 8.9 inch screen. Pretty fast though and it has a built in web cam which takes really good pics all things considered.

I know you gotta be ready to get the new system up and running. Have a blast with it.

Posted by: ffman Mar 11 2009, 10:53 AM

I considered purchasing one of those - dumb question but does it have a port for an ethernet cord? The display mainly emphasized wireless access, which I don't have.

Yes, there is a port for ethernet and three USB ports. Ports for speaker and microphone and a couple of others that I have no idea what could be plugged into them. One thing I would like to know from someone is where I can find a plug and play external CD Rom drive. I've got nine million things I would like to download on here.

The best thing about this system is that it comes with XP Home edition because I hate Vista.

Posted by: ffman Mar 11 2009, 11:50 AM

Nice. How long does a typical battery charge last?

Sorry for all the questions....I'm trying to decide whether to TRY (key word) to save up enough for one.

Battery life, depending on how many apps you have running is around one and a half to two hours. They also offer an extended life battery that will go six hours. That, and an extended life battery will be my next pickups.

Posted by: ffman Mar 11 2009, 11:56 AM

Ouch. Thanks for the assistance.

Well, the new desktop computer arrived this morning! However, I've been a "good boy" and kept focused on work. I'll get to play later tonight! biggrin.gif

If you can believe this, the 2 boxes from Dell remain unopened! ohmy.gif

For the first time in a very long time, I was actually able to go with my wife and youngest son to dinner at the in-laws on a weeknight. I'm really enjoying the increased family time that working from home 1-2 days per week provides!

Honestly, I've waited 10+ years for a new desktop computer. One more day isn't going to hurt me. wink.gif

The Acer 1000HE has 9 hours of battery life, WinXP, 160gb hd, 1gb ram, webcam... For about $350-75 bucks. I'm almost sure I'm getting one and getting rid of the Mac (it's too much machine for what I do, which is what you likely do, Cody - surf, write papers, chat, and email).

Also, for external dvd/cd - you can get those with USB connection.
