Okay, I've gotten a few of these, but I'm not sure what makes them so special. Does a lower number mean it is more valuable because it is short-printed or something? huh.gif

As a matter of fact....the lower the serial number the better. A card numbered to /999 is better (value wise) than a card that is not numbered at all. However, a card numbered to /599 is better than one numbered to /999 because the print run is shorter. The lower the print run the better. As far as I can tell....a card numbered 96/99 is better than a card numbered 1/500. The card being the first card in a print run might mean something to some people and they may a slightly higher premium because it is numbered 1/500.....but the value of that card shouldn't be any higher than the card numbered 96/99 because of the print run. Not to mention...people on EBAY will try to sell the card numbered 1/500 as a 1/1 because of the serial number.....that's one of the big EBAY scams right now.

First, welcome to the site! Glad to have you join us. wink.gif

If you have any questions as you look around more, just let me or another member of the TCC Team know.

As KHarmon already mentioned, the lower the number - the more valuable the card generally. However, please keep in mind that the standard rules of "supply and demand" still apply. So, while a low numbered card guarantees that the supply is low, demand may or may not exist for the card. wink.gif

What are the numbered cards that you have so far?

IT could, but some cards are not numbered and still have a limited print run. These 'short prints' almost always go for a premium regardless of if a number/number is printed on them. Numbering is just a bit more common these days in an attempt to bring attention to products.

Numbered cards can be a nice addition, but in the end it's still all about player and product popularity that affect the value.

Welcome aboard!

Right now, I have a 2005 Chris Drury UD Victory numbered 3/100 and also a 99 Leaf Emmitt Smith numbered 874/2500

I assume that the Drury is the third card printed out of 100 total and the Smith is the 874th card of 2500 total. Is that correct?

That would be correct. One thing you'll begin to notice about serial #'d cards is that the print runs on some cards are getting shorter and shorter. With the advent of the 1/1 serial numbered cards there are some manufacturers that are starting to short print the whole set of cards. I'm not sure...but I think the highest print run I've seen on a serial number from any of this years set is 1,500.

I'm not sure that I would say that the number corresponds to when it was "printed". It's simply numbered 3/100 and 874/2500. Without knowing all the details of the printing process, I think there's reason to believe that the order in which the cards are printed could be different than what they are numbered to - especially for hand-numbered cards. A minor issue, but something to consider. wink.gif

Collectors Edge brought this great innovation to the card world back in its football heyday...

It also led them to bankruptcy when collectors and dealers starting finding exactly matching serial numbers like my two Johnny Unitas's #3696/5000 from the Masters set of 1995 or 1996. They guaranteed a serial numbered card per pack!!

They also were the first company to put GU stuff in their cards and those were serial numbered also.

1995 Collectors edge football had pieces of super Bowl used ball in their cards..

I cannot recall anything before then ever having serial numbers, everything was designated with an SP or Short Print...Like the Jordan rookie baseball card from 1990? (im not sure of the year)

Anybody got anything earlier than those?
