I'd like to join, but really only collect basketball cards. I could buy a football GU or auto card somewhere I guess.

I haven't been active at trading for 6 months or so, and was taken aback by the changes at beckett's website. I had been using their checklist system for 10 years or more. And now all my checklists seem to be gone. I wish I could have backed them up to disc or something. Thanks beckett.

I mostly do basketball , which is the hardest sport, but some baseball. My record slow is Tiny Archibald, 15 months, though a different address came back in 2 weeks. (Sent the 2nd when I got a new address, never thought I'd see the First.)
Shortest is 5 days , don't remember who, but a retired baseball player.
My favorite success is broadcaster, NBA, U of MD star Len Elmore, because he was the center at Maryland when I was there.
Best success story Drew Nicholas, from U of MD National Title team, in two weeks from Bennetton team in Italy. (He was a teammate of Bargani)
Worst failure Ryan Randle from same team, over 1 1/2 years c/o NBDL team.
I've had pretty good success with my NBA at 50 quest including Jerry West, Big ) (though some claim it's a stamp), Kareem, Dave DeBusshere (before he died obviously), and a bunch more.
The Stan Musial postcard is cool too.
Jim Gentile is the only guy who ever sent me a bonus card.
Big George Foreman is another cool success.
And Martin Yan.
But the jewel of my collection is my hero (ine) Grace Slick.

For retired players it doesn't matter what time of year (unless they are active coaches or team execs). For players summer is better if you have home addresses, but early in the season or preseason is best care of team.
Also keep in mind some older players maintain summer/winter addresses. Like Florida in winter and hometown rest of year.
