QUOTE(JasonS @ Apr 9 2010, 11:06 AM) Sad news today. Jim Pagliaroni passed away. He was a catcher for the Pirates and a heck of a nice guy. I sent him a card to sign once, and since he lives in the same town (pop 11k) as I do, it came back very fast. He answered all my questons and was very nice. I met him a few times at the store and out and about. He always had time to say hello and ask about things. He will be missed alot. http://www.theunion.com/article/20100409/N...entProfile=1053I remember Pags well. Mostly I remember the '69 season and the Pilots, his final major league season. I heard nothing but great things about him. He really seemed like a nice man. I am very sorry to hear of his passing. |

QUOTE(nolan34ryan @ Jan 28 2010, 12:00 AM) I hear you on this one but I'm kinda torn when a player like Dawson is so close to having an equal stint at two spots, and I think his MVP season is better than his playoff wins and roy award. As a Rangers fan don't get me wrong I'm Glad Nolan went in as a Ranger but seriously the guy played 27 years in the bigs and it was his third briefest stay. And the only team he spent less time with the Mets he won a WS with in one of the most remarkable comebacks ever. Because he was a Texan I think they should have put him in as an astro. But if you go by impact he has to go in as an Angel...I mean super sick numbers in California. As a Texas Rangers Fan I'm very Thankful but feel undeserving that we got him. I think we got him because they knew felt bad for us never having been represented before or since in cooperstown. Actually, it was because of a contractual agreement he made with the Rangers when he signed his last playing contract with them. The Rangers would pay him X amount of $ if he went into the Hall as a Ranger. It was a bonus. He would have had to pay the bonus back if he went in with another team. Nolan decided he became a HOFer as a Ranger, and that's what you see on his plaque in Cooperstown. It was, however, contractually agreed upon years before the event. |

QUOTE(2000 rushing yards @ Jan 11 2010, 06:23 PM) I suppose, if it was legal before they weren't doing anything wrong then (at least legally), I'm gonna have to change my position on this. Steroids were banned from baseball in 1991 or 1992 by then Commissioner, Fay Vincent, after hearing stories of what was happening in Oakland. Stories that it was circulating around the major leagues were already around at that time. Any use of steroids after that official bannishment of the substance was an illegal use. Any player using it as such was using it illegally. As for andro, unlike anabolic steroids, it is or was an over the counter type of supplement you could pick up at GNC at the time. Yes, it has steroid qualities, which is why it was used. It was not, however, listed as one of the banned substances at the time. It was banned shortly after it was found in McGwire's locker. Thus, that useage would be a gray area. However, McGwire confessed to using more than andro to get the results he wanted. It wasn't just the andro, folks. He said he started experimenting in the late '80's, and began using it regularly around 1993. This is after steroids were listed as a banned substance. I would recommend checking out this link... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wogDnpYhRkNow, if one still wants to believe it was just andro, take a look at this link... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=942HcHKbOnoPlease note his response, in that testimony, to the question, "In addition to andro what other substances did you use?" It's a look at his responses to those questions today, and how he addressed them before. To me this is all spin. He may want to believe he could have put up those huge home run totals without the stuff, and he may truly believe that. If so, he is deceiving himself and trying to deceive baseball fans all over the world. Yes, he had God given talent, and yes, he would have hit home runs...but not as much without the juice. How many would he have hit we will never know. Today his records are tarnished because of steroid useage. That doesn't make him Hall worthy. He was a great player and fun to watch, but he needed steroids to put up the numbers he did. Yes, in the record books he is right there along side Harmon Killebrew. However, one needed steroids to inflate his numbers, and the other did not. Sorry, but I say no to the Hall of Fame for McGwire. I'm glad he cleared his psyche, so to speak, and will no longer have to live with the hidden truth, but coming forward does not improve his chances for the Hall. I also do not believe that improves A-Rod chances, either. Unlike McGwire, A-Rod is still playing and can build on what he has accomplished, so far. It's what he accomplishes from this point onward that Hall voters will be looking for. For that reason, and not because he's a Yankee, or playing in New York, A-Rod stands a better chance of enshrinement. As for McGwire, at least he now has a chance to start talking about the future and cleaning up the image of the game that has been tarnished by PED's. In short, you don't have to be a Hall of Famer to act like one. For some it may be a few years late, but I applaud Mr. McGwire for coming forward. |

QUOTE(JasonS @ Feb 6 2010, 05:19 PM) Today the mailman brought me one of my best returns yet. One of my favorite illustrators/artist Joe Sinnott signed my Defenders comic in exactly one months time. He and I are both huge SF Giants fans so I sent him some Giants autographs. He returned my comic with a nice letter of thanks. Great guy and one heck of an artist too. Joe Sinnott PO Box 406 Saugerties, NY 12477 Sketches are available for sale on his website. www.joesinnott.com Jason, I got burned out on comics abou6t 30-years ago, but those returns of yours are simply outstanding! Keep 'em coming! You make me want to pull out some of the old comics! |

QUOTE(whalerfan @ Jan 22 2010, 12:46 PM) Nice to see those come back that you've given up on. The extra cards cost about 2 years each... Yeah, I sent him two and he signed those and added two more signed cards, so I'm definitely not complaining. That was a very pleasant surprise and worth the wait. |
