Player Collector – keyword is “player”, tries to collect bulk lots of their favorite player, may have multiples of one card; cards range from commons to 1/1s, does not care if it is base or AU/GU just as long as it is the player; does not like to spend for a card most of the time, but will trade for it; will purchase other player cards at a low price to use as trade bait; may collect one or more players
Player Super Collector (Player Collector sub-category) – keyword is “player master set”; has at least 80% of the cards ALREADY IN-HAND from the player’s checklist that may also include non-listed, obscure, little-known cards and at 50% of 1/1s produced to date in their collection; has good overall knowledge of the player they collect; a super collector may also specialize in obtaining just a collection of all or most (70% minimum) AU or GU cards from the checklist; focuses collection on one player
Prospector (Player Collector sub-category) – keyword is “rookie”; primarily collects and hoards rookie cards of a player(s) yet to play; buys low and in bulk hoping the player pans out to score high with the rookie cards they have collected; some may sell when the player becomes hot or they may keep the cards to just to brag “Oh yeah, I got a hundred of them”
Team Collector – keyword is “team”; collects complete team sets and/or the star players of that one particular team; the star singles may vary from base to 1/1s but is within the theme of the team he collects; they do not care if it is base or GU/AU just as long as it is of the team; may do trades to complete a team set
Team Fanatic (Team Collector sub-category) – keyword is “the team is all”; collects not only cards, but jerseys, mugs, pennants, clothes, gear, mini helmets, blankets, bed spreads, table cloths, etc.; goes all out for anything that is team-related
Set Collector – keyword is “set building”; collects/builds complete sets, whether they are base sets or subsets or parallels; does massive amounts of trading; may often use the special or star cards as trade bait
Box Breaker (Set Collector sub-category) – keyword is “box break”; buys boxes hoping to score on rare cards for sale/trade or favorite player/team items for personal collection; may build at least one set from the base cards of a box break
Vintage Collector – keyword is “vintage”; collects cards and/or sets from 1940 to 1973
Type Collector (Vintage Collector sub-category) - keyword is "card type"; collects one type of each card manufactured for each year, usually rare issues; cards do not need to depict a star
Prewar Collector (Vintage Collector sub-category) – keyword is “prewar”; collects tobacco items, gum cards, post cards and ads manufactured before 1940; most of these items are won at auctions, very few, if any, are traded
Advanced Collector (Vintage Collector sub-category) – keyword is “origin”; collects rare tobacco issues, postcards, posters and artifacts from the early stages of the game; the items acquired are close to or even more than a century old; rarely do trades, most items are won at auction houses
AU/GU Collector – keyword is “auto/game-used”; exclusively collects autographed and/or game-used cards of one or many players and/or of one or many teams
HOF Collector (Vintage Collector and Vintage/AU-GU hybrid) – keyword is “HOF”; collects all types of cards of HOFers whether it be GU or AU or base; many start their collection working backwards by decade starting from the most recent inductees since their cards are more easily obtainable
Old School Collector (Post Vintage/Pre-Modern hybrid) - keyword is "what's a chase card?"; collects cards that were manufactured from 1974 to 1989, before the "chase card craze"
Dabbler – keyword is “oh, that looks pretty”; collects whatever comes his way or catches his fancy or what is currently in fashion; no particular theme involved; a lot of times collects what is currently hot, mostly star players of various teams/sports and/or cards in demand
Flipper (Dealer/box breaker hybrid) - keyword is "action"; player/type of card isn't as important as profit potential; typically "flips" almost immediately while the item is hot; has no problem parting with an item as soon as he believes he has a fair return on his investment and does not worry about "what ifs"; not greedy and only cares about selling at more than what it was bought for, usually at 20%
Weekend Warrior (Dealer sub-category) - keyword is "how to be a jerk"; dealers who attend card shows only to amuse themselves and show off their collection; are rock hard when it comes to bargaining; you can spot them by their never-changing inventories and lack of customers at their booth; they are not interested in selling unless you're willing to pay for their outlandishly high prices
"Specialist" (Type-collector/player collector hybrid) - this collector's quirk on collecting is narrwed down to focusing on one small aspect, such as 3-color patches only, on-card autographs only, one specific serial # for any card they collect, only cards that capture the batter in a swing, cards that only show dunks, cards of one player from only one card company, etc.
"Flavor of the Week" (Player/Team collector hybrid) - collects the hot player or team of the week or month or season; has no allegiance to any player or team so wants change from time to time, usually in mid season and usually more than once
I guess I'll go with team collector, but my biggest focus is Bagwell, Biggio, and Berkman. But if I see something from the Astros that catchs my eye, I'll buy it. I have autos from most of the Astros main players from the last 10 years.
When it comes to football, I collect current and Hall of Fame Raiders. So I gues that means I'll have to buy an Aaron Brooks auto when he gets one in his Raider uniform.
player
I chose Dabbler since the make-up of my collection fits this category best. However, the size of my collection shows that I'm pretty serious about my dabbling.
-Bob
Amazing list....hmmm with so many options who am I?!?
Well, of course, I'm a "Player Super Collector"
I had to go with Team fanatic...since I collect so many of the different Rangers players.
7 votes and 7 different answers so far...
-Bob
I am definately a Team fanatic as I collect all that is Yankees, Jets and Knicks (although my Knicks collection is rather light. I need to change that). Cards, hats, mini helmets, autos, GU cards, action figures make up my collection and I'm not done yet
Set collector here, currently working 2001 Fleer Legacy Hat set and certain 2002 Fleer Throwbacks insert sets... after that, who knows? Maybe I'll finsih my 2001 Topps Archives Reserves Helmet set...
I put in Hall of Fame collector, although it's specialized.
I put set collector , but I could also be a player or team collector also.I really do all three.
Quite the assortment we have here so far...
I did Team Fanatic. I got a room full of Bears stuff. McFarlanes, jerseys, helmets, clocks, signs, posters, signed footballs, everything you can think of bears. I also have about 200 bears gu/autographed cards
I have problems.
Didn't see any one choice that fit me so I went with player collector.....since I did go from Yao Ming to Delmon Young to Pete Rose.
I'm a little bit of this and a little bit of that kind of collector. I fit a few of those categories. I'm mostly a set builder. I'm building Topps baseball sets from 1975 thru 1995. I'm part player collector. I have a pre-war player collection. I'm a vintage collector. I have about 100 cards from the 50's and 60's. Mostly from the bargin bins from shows. And some times an old school collector. I have traded higher BV on cards just to get some lower BV cards I needed for my sets.
I'm just a player collector.
Wow, I am telling you, I am looking at the terrific descriptions Robert listed... and then I am looking at what some collectors classify themselves as... Indiana, I believe you should have created a "collector in denial" category...
I could fit in too a lot of those categories but I picked hof collector cause thats my current project!!
BOX BREAKER
i guess im a player super collector wannabe... lol...
Come on, people! Don't be shy!
Im a dabbler/Vintage collector....
I see no one here has fessed up to being a weekend warrior yet
I guess I had to best describe myself as a flipper. I have no trouble getting rid of any card(s). Basically need to fund my addiction so selling a card asap(while it`s still hot)is my way. I also enjoy building sets but they`re becoming much more difficult and confusing to do. You can also categorize me in the Team Fanatic class. I have a lot of New York Jets Collectibles from autographed 8x10`s to mini helmets to autographed and professionally framed/matted jersey`s. But I also collect anything football really. I have a few other signed jersey`s and lithographs of various stars like Joe Montana and Favre. Maybe I`ll get a few pics up one day of my Jets/football stuff.
Only 28 out of 3000?
Team Collector - but not necessarily interested in the 'complete team set' unless the players are all currently with my team, pretty rare anymore. Avalanche is all!
Team Fanatic - to a dabbling extent with pucks, team flag, hitch cover, jerseys, glassware, but it has to be a reasonably quality item of some everyday use to me, but no attempt to "finish sets" of anything in this category
Happy Collector - one who is content with the journey taken to architect their collection without regard to it's monetary value or perceived value to other collectors.
Anyone else?
I had to say dabbler, because I collect any star baseball players. Ripken, Griffey, Sosa, McGwire, Pujols, Andruw Jones, Chipper Jones, Greg Maddux, Pedro, Clemens, and so forth.
Probably a box breaker combined with a player super collector. Nothing beats the thrill of opening a brand new box of cards! I also collect all things to do with Mike Bibby!
How many members and only 40 votes????
Wow - good point.
Come on, don't be shy.....
OK, Player Super Collector, to be! I don't need to elaborate on who, but that s my vote!
Who voted "Advanced Collector"?
Team Collector. Collecting all the teams from 1903 to present. That's my main focus. But I also have some star players going--Mattingly #1, Mantle (just what is inexpenisve or a steal to get) Berra, Ford, Maris, Ruth, Gehrig and currently Jeter and A.Rod. I'd like to get all the base cards for Jeter and A.Rod. The same for Mattingly, except as many of the 1/1's as I can and other oddball items, as well. I also love the yearbooks. I've come to realize that I'd love to live in NY just to get the newspapers--I guess there is all kinds of added Yankee collectible stuff issued by them each year--I'm on the wrong coast.
Dabbler!!! I start Sets Teams and Player Collections all at the same time (no wonder i never get anything done)
can we add a category for In Need of Card Collectors Anonymous?
I think thats what I fit in best. I would guess I am dabbler/box breaker if I had to categorize though.
I voted box breaker though since I am addicted to busting packs.
I don't know what mine would count as. I collect Stars from the 60-70-80-90-now type, GU & AU cards, and My favorite teams players cards
For me Im a mixture of box breaker, team collector, player collector; but my main interest is AU/GU COLLECTOR. I think that the most value is in these type of cards(even though i will probaly never sell them). Also its just a cool concept to have a jersey or what not in a card
I am a mixture of Prospector and Team fanatic. I voted for Team Fanatic, because I have a lot of Dallas Cowboy's stuff in my room. I mean mini helmets and pretty much anything. I am starting to become a Prospector though, but who knows I just may drop the Team Fanatic and become a Prospector.
Team Fanatic. If it's got a Bears symbol on it, I'll collect it.
I chose player collector. I mainly go after base and sometimes GU/Auto. Usually prefer collecting players listed in my signature, but if I see something/pull something nice, I'll take it. I will collect my favorite players no matter what; if they are hurt, traded, team doing bad, player doing bad, I will still go after them. I've recently become interested in collecting sets, but not giant sets, just insert sets, since there are less of them. Sorry if I offend someone, but I don't particular like people who just tend to collect people who are "hot" at the time. It's basically saying you aren't a true fan of any particular team or player and you want to get the players while they're hot, mostly for money gain. I think of myself as a collector who collects for personal enjoyment. I often ask for prices on my cards, but I don't think I could ever see myself selling them. I like staying true to my favorite teams and players. I like originality, collecting to enlarge your collection, not collecting so you can get some money.
I'm leaning from dabbler to player collector....
i don't know if i posted al ready but i voted team collector. IF it's a card wth the o's logo on it, i collect it, i trade for them, buy team sets, strip the o's cards out of some sets. I'm at 529, and i'm probaly not even 25% of the way there but as my sig said, goin for 1000.
I'm also somewhat of a player collector with rickey henderson. I probaly have about 100 cards of him, but i'm sure there are 5000+ cards of him.
Your main focus was what I was after. I'm not solely a prewar vintage collector. I do collect Bengals multi-colored patches and some other modern stuff. But prewar is my main focus.
I picked Team Collector with a bit of Player Collector. Steve Yzerman is definitely the player that I hope to have the most of but if it's a Red Wings card than I've got a place for it in my collection!
Player super collecter. My goal is to collect every Klesko card made. What can I say, everyone needs some kind of goal in life. Only have about 300 so I have a LOONNNGGGG way to go.
I would consider myself a Player Collector. But i have dabbled in prospecting and GU/Auto collecting. So it just depends on the time of year!! LOL My Barkley Collection has been on hold for a couple of years. (I have approx. 1000 different Barkleys. Not close to half of his cards.) The last 8 years have yeilded an obssesion with 03-04 Exquisite, a Marbury Auto/GU craze, Andruw Jones and John Smoltz "anything collecting", a buy "Lots" off ebay to resell(only they sit in boxes). Torry Holt and Rams collecting, and of course the Childress Auto Collection! ... I think I need help!! LOL
I chose player collector as I have multiple teams represented by the players I collect.....
If you ask my wife she would say "SUPER team fanatic" She said our computer room is a Nebraska shrine. I know there are guy worst them me but I do have a lot of stuff over 4200 diff cards of the huskers. Where does that put me??
Team Fanatic.
I selected Player Colector though I'm down to 1.5 players to collect.
With Thortnon in SJ and Razor in Toronto, I now only collect their back issue in Bruins uniform. That leaves Nabokov as a full fledged ongoing player to collect.
I also dabble in Bruins team sets each year and a goalie related collection...base and cool inserts like Mask and Goaltending Glory and the like.
I'd call myself a Super Player Collector - Aaron Rodgers - Green Bay Packers - Cal.
What started with a lot of 5 press pass cards in Summer of 2005, which I got hand Autographed by Aaron, migrated to collecting every Rookie card, insert, #'d, GU I could get a hold of. Got hooked on Ebay, trying to get anything I could under $20. Then picked up an Auto or two..(OK this is stating to sound like an AA or shall I say Card Collectors Anonymous confession) I started to buy lots of Rookies to get a hold of cards I didn't have. Then had a goal to get every card made, that I could get for less than $40. Parallel sets, I needed one of each number. Gu, I needed one of each color...At this point my price point has gone to to $55 or so. I have 35+ Autos, still need the high end ones. And have probably 85% of all cards with a BV of less than $50. And most I have from 2-75 of each. I still need to make a list of my needs...
I also began to collect a couple of other 2005 players JJ Arrington, Terence Murphy, Carlos Rogers to get some of the nicer cards I couldn't get of Aaron.
I also collected many, many 2005 Rookies, thinking I'd flip the players doing well to get more Rodgers. Also I had a terrible habit of Add-Ons, shipping was cheep so I bought more from the same seller of stars, RC or extras - And Lots, to get one card...This Is What I'm Trading now.
I also collect RC of other Packers and then added GU & Autos of Packers, 49ers from the 70-90's when I was a fan.
So yes, my name is Robert and I'm a Super Collector and I'm addicted...
BTW - I'll take any Aaron cards you want to trade...
Sorry - I was a little long winded...
Robert
Player Super Collector
If there is a Larry Walker out there I do not have it will be mine soon enough. My den is like a shrine with all the bats and jerseys. Then I am not even talking about his cards, photos etc.
I'm a combo; combination of many..cant vote!!..
I would say I major in AU/GU collecting with a minor in Player collecting and Box Breaking.
Playor Collector-Craig Biggio and Ike Diogu
I'm a TRUE player collector
I think I'll have to put myself in the same category as Ken did.
The problem with having so many categories is that you're likely to fall into more than one (or, in my case, MANY more than one).
I'll accept "dabbler" because I can define that as "collecting whatever interests me".
I collect Patrick Roy and Dan Marino cards, so that makes me a player collector.
I collect Avs, Dolphins and Lakers cards so team collectors fits too.
I do occasionally build sets.
But the sets I work on most are vintage ones (pre 1980 for the most part).
I collect auto/gu stuff.
I do bust boxes, hoping for big pulls to finanace the next box I bust.
Ehhh...just put me in the "Addicted" category and leave it at that.
I think I fall under the player collector as of now. Since I'm getting and keeping EVERY Brady Quinn card I can. If I already have 10 or 15 of one card if I find another one I'll get it as well.
I don't think any one of those categories fits my collecting. I began as a player collector (Ken Griffey, Jr.). Then I was a player collector of Darin Erstad for a while, but not really now. Then I got into collecting several sets and player collecting Lamar Gordon. If I had to define my collecting, I'd call myself an aesthetic collector as I collect sets that I like the looks of and in the case of Griffey, I liked his swing and the way he played the game. The other two had personal connections to places I went to school. This is a really interesting topic.
I chose player collector (David Carr). Haven't reached 70% yet but I hope to get most of his cards in the next years.
I have another question for anyone who think they know the answer to. What would I be classified as if I collect anything and everything that I can get that has that players picture on it? For example I'm collecting Brady Quinn, but I collect anything that Quinn is pictured on, like I kept my package from my pack of Press Pass I bought because Quinn is pictured on it.
I like everything but still mainly collect orioles, i'm a mix
I am a Sad, Pathetic, Dying & 11% Set Collector!
This is so bleak that I believe I'm going to have email Judy Heeter!
Collect Hard, Gentlemen!
I went with Team Fanatic not because I necessarily have a lot of Red Sox cards, but just items in general.
AU/GU and HOF and some TEAM.
I'm a combination of Team Collector (my vote), Dabbler, and Prospector.
Team Collector--I collect any and all Yanks
Dabbler--If I see a GU or auto or a refractor that catches my eye on the bay, I'll go for it.
Prospector--I love collecting autos and refs of minor leaguers, in fact I just won a Brandon Wood auto.
"Player Super Collector"
I don't have exact figures available regarding overall %, but am pretty sure I meet the requirement. Check out my bucket, which has almost everything except base cards and high numbered parallels.
Very very very very nice collection Adam.
I went with player super collector (who else has 100 different GU or Autos of Kurt Warner...I know I know he's a scrub now but I'm not in it for the money (unless I get engaged lol j/k)
voted box breaker.
I'm really wanting to become a player super collector at one time with my Calico collection, but it'll be a while before I can do that. As for now, I'll just stick with Player Collector (Tyrone Calico) and Team Fanatic (Notre Dame Fighting Irish). I'll collect anything that has anything to do with the Fighting Irish.
box breaker 4 sure.
I said team collector beacuse I collect everything cardinals.
Nice topic. I would say I am a dabbler, although I have player collections of Shawn Marion and Miguel Cabrera.
I'm a combination of things. I guess I'm mostly an Old School Vintage Dabbler with a touch of Team Player.
I am mostly a player collector. Main focuses are on Brett Favre, Ernie Sims, and recently Lawrence Timmons...I could almost be considered a supercollector of Ernie Sims, because I have 2 or 3 1/1s of him, but I have slacked off since the end of last season so I would have to buy a few lots to get that ranking....Brett Favre has been a really up and coming thing with me lately, when I was younger I always loved pulling cards of him, but now I am really pushing to get as many different cards of him as I can before he retires and his prices skyrocket...Lawrence Timmons...hmm I haven't been trying to hard with his collection and I'm not sure how long I will continue with it, if he develops like Sims I will try to keep it going, but other than that I migth just forget about him if he is a flop.
I went for set collector, as the first project (possible mini project) I have gone for since coming into the hobby is to put together all 16 of the Rivals cards and all 25 of the Playbook cards out of 07 Gridiron Gear. I Could also come under 'Soon to be Player Collector' as I am wanting to start a collection of Jay Cutler cards.
I thought it was time to bump this sweet thread!!
I chose player collector, but someday hope to get to say super player collector.
I also do some team collecting (browns, ohio state).
Focus on play though!
If this would have been posted last year, then I would have been a AU/GU collector and Dabbler, since I just collected what caught my eye. But now that McFadden is in the picture, I'm a player collector.
I love how some of the descriptions have more of a negative tone than others. No bias at all, eh?
I'd say I'm both a "dabbler" and "flipper."
I also love how you say that a flipper breaks a lot of boxes, when in fact, you rarely get that much profit, if any, by breaking boxes.
Well i'm a supercollector of John Beck and Wes Welker.
cant totaly say beck by what you say i have over 220 different but he has over 900 cards. thats less than 30 %.
Welker i can say i am as i am only missing a few 1/1's and very few recent paralles.
I am also a team colelctor as i collect any and all dolphins. but mainly focus on my main 2 guys.
I'm definitely a team collector. I want every Steeler card in existence! Past, present, you name it, I want it.
I will take duplicates.
I also collect Auburn alumni:
Mostly Bo Jackson, Jason Campbell, Carnell "Cadillac" Williams, Carlos Rogers, and Ronnie Brown.
[Ryan]
i think i am a combo collector. I dabble in a little bit of everything team, player, and neat things. plus dual game used and any auto
team and player
weekend warrior here
I'm part team collector, player collector, box breaker, rookie collector and old school.
But I voted for old school. I love buying cases of older cards and busting them open. Most of my card buying is older wax/cello/rack boxes.
nice 2 c u back AMG!
HOF Collector
I recently changed from player collector to Auto/Game-Used. The wallet is definitely going to feel it. :/
Packers team fanatic here. Actually cards are one of my lowest priorities because they focus on the player more so than the team. Player items I like the most are things like the pizza hut glass set with Lombardi, Starr, Hornung, Davis, Nitschke and Kramer. Or the RC cola can Packers team set, or the coke cap stuff from the 60's and 70's or the Drenks potato chip pin set. Other than that I really like team oriented glassware and team oriented die cast but I will collect anything Packers if I can get it.
No Favre rookies or Jets cards in my collection. here are just a couple of pictures.
Attached thumbnail(s)
Lol, not sure what I'd be classified under.. My collection is all over the place from I guess Super Collector, to team, hof, dabbler, set, autos etc etc..
Team Collector all the way
el bumpo...
Still a super collector. Just not much out there left, lol.
Went with player super collector but I also dabble in a version of team collecting.
I'm sorry, but I had to re-edit the definition of super-collector. I also re-did the count for that particular category. More research has to go into this category.
Remember, this is a poll of your current practice, not what you wish to be.
Two prime examples of super collectors are Jaderock and labguy42. You wanna be one? Match them...
so i voted- super player collector. do you think i fit that vote????
I put mine under player collector, although I do think of myself as super..... crazy for collecting Luke Jackson
i think i fit the super collector status. 90% of the cards that i need are commons or 1/1's. but i own close to 60 1/1's already. plus the player i collect has, (and this is just in becketts player list) at least 475 rookies. i think that # is closer to about 510-520. 10 times harder to complete than a player that has 20-30 rookies. and Edgerrin has at least 20-30 1/1 rookies or more. if thats not a lot of work than wow
I'm going with Player Collector. Don't have enough to be called a "Super Collector". Only difference from the description is that I mostly buy stuff, as opposed to trading for it.
I voted before for Player Super Collector, as the only thing I collect is Brian Leonard!
definitely a team collector! I don't limit it to the star players I collect all Colts, if they are wearing a Colt uni then they are welcome in my collection! I bleed blue and so does my PC!
Justin
Can we add Serial # Collector.....or a Serious Nut Case....
That way I can vote...
Can't belive I never posted in this thread.
My current and possibly final status in the Hobby isn't listed.
Retired - just trying to finish some olders sets & get rid of all of the extra stuff that's gathered over the years, after that I'll just fade away into the sunset.
I'll guess I'll remain as a player collector, although additions to all three player collections have been quite slim lately (Sosa, Wright, Lee).
Team collector slightly fits the bill in the football department, although I go after very little and don't chase the entire team.
Feeling a little guilty today, this is bad and I confess my transgressions.
My Goodies Box, I have to file these cards n get a holt of myself.
2008 Topps HR-BW Brandon Webb highlightsjsy
2005 UD Origins Rich Harden Auto
2007 Donruss #113 Justin Jackson Auto 321/850
2003 Topps Blue Chips Milton Bradley Auto
2005 Prime Patches Carlos Lee Auto/Bat
2006 Topps #153 Nelson Cruz Auto
2005 UD AutoFacts Casey Kotchman Auto 150/599
There are alot more in the box, but for brevities sake I won't go there. I realized today I'm sick with this. To have these cards just sitting in a box not even priority is bad.
othecardman
I think I will have to add a couple more categories...
Added one more category.
Upon further thinking and debating I believe I fall into three of these categories. (AU/GU Collector, Player Collector, Team Collector)
I collect from two teams (NY Yankees and NY Giants) but my collection has been narrowed only to include certain players from these teams with a particular focus on Autos or Patches of these players. I used to have a broad stroke in regards to players from these teams but it made my focus more than I personally or financially would like.
That being said though I am a player collector in regards to my favorite ball player of all time, Don Mattingly. Also I dabble (lightly) after Patches and Autos of Donavan Tate.
Although it seems getting the guys that I like from these teams is like pulling teeth as they are NY teams and sell well. Most of my additions tend to come from card shops or places such as Ebay.
Basically I confuse myself..
Adam
Well, I'm definitely still a player collector!
Not a player supercollector yet though, although I'm almost to 33% of all non- 1/1's!
these are estimates of my collection. i have not counted everything. but i feel these #'s are close to the range i put!
im not sure if i have 80% of all edgerrin cards. i would say closer to about 60% maybe more but theres like 4,500+ listed in beckett. i probably have about 50% of all his 1/1's. about 80%-90% of all his rookie year card most of the rest being 1/1's. every base rookie card he has 100%. 70%-80% of all his base. about 50%-60% of his autos and game-used. and countless things not listed in beckett!!! but i still consider my self a super collector. it my only true focus. and most of whats held me back, is stuff not surfacing on eBay. and i just came to the site back in august. before that i never traded. but im only little over 2 years in so.......
What does the new blood at TCC say?
Team Fanatic here, I guess my avatar name kinda gives it away..
Jerad
I used to be a player collector. Was only interested in Brady Quinn. I actually had quite a few cards.
However, I quit collecting over a year ago, so now I'm clearing out all except a few autos and one or two patches.
Wow. Things sure have changed for me. I still pick up vintage every now and then, but have concentrated more on Team Set Collecting on Bengals, and now Rangers.
Just two years ago I learned the proper rules of hockey and I didn't realize how much I was missing. I started off with the Blue Jackets (because they were mentioned on Chicago PD) but then heck, this is a home team I can root for. I guess I was gravitating more towards hockey now because the price range made it accessible for me to attend games. Plus, out of my friends I hang with there is one that is a Rangers fan. My other friends only know my collection interests as "sports" other than the ones who play poker, they only focus in on when I play the ponies.
I never thought I would follow hockey. It was the LAST sport on my list, although there was a short stint when I did because baseball was pushing out a GLUT of stuff. Pavel Bure. Mannon Rheaume. That Devils Pressure Defense. Yeah, all early 90's and even back then I STILL did not understand the game.
What I've learned the past 10 years?
You don't need the most expensive cards to be a good collector.
You don't need ALL of the cards to be a good collector.
What you need is your passion for your sport or team.
So what if you don't have that RC? I have an OPC 14 Zuccarello card and I'm happy with it. I don't have his RC because I really don't like the design of his RC, no matter how much in demand it is in. I don't need a RC for my collection to be worth something. It's worth something to ME and that is all that matters.
Now I am starting to collect full team sets. I don't need to grab that single everyone else is wanting. If it's ugly, I don't want it. The only ugly I like is on pre-war vintage. They went through the years without help from today's technology. You think a T206 slabbed back then if they had today's technology be worth so much?
And I LOVE group breaks. Pay for the team and hope for the best. Yeah, sometimes you get hosed, but when you get a hit, it is definitely euphoric. I would like to give the box breakers (and the TCC team) my eternal gratification for putting up with me. You guys know what I mean.
how long id preach hockey to you..LOL

but my non sport collection still is my current focal point for growth .. blame two girls!
