This is old news by now, but Mr. Emerick ( aceecards) goaded me into firing up this forum and that I intend to do with a vengeance.

A member of the Armed Forces goes through a vigorous background check before he or she is ever trained in firearms and marksmanship, yet one can purchase an AR-15 from the internet or at a Gun Show without so much as an ID card?
Believe me, the four Democrats that voted with the 2nd amendment worshippers will pay for their short-sighted lack of guts and logic. I don't even care that they may be replaced by Republicans. The fact is, our representatives, whether Senators of House members need to be awakened to the fact that this is not he "Wild, Wild West" anymore. A simple questionnaire is not too much to ask for before purchasing a weapon that could conceivably kill and maim dozens of people in a matter of minutes.

QUOTE(RGBII @ Apr 26 2013, 03:08 PM) Only criminals break the law, correct?
Republican talking points that I tend to disregard in the same manner as Astrology. Of course! That's a great idea, actually! Let's just disregard all statements containing facts that we can't twist and turn until they meet our own agenda. On a serious note, though, my point didn't have anything to do with who does/doesn't break the law. My point is that there are already measures in place to prevent online sales to people who don't posses a FFL (people who haven't had a background check done on them already), but they don't work. Global background checks won't prevent the illegal buying and selling of weapons, either. It will just further prevent the legal buying and selling of weapons. I have yet to see any evidence that would convince me otherwise. If you would like to provide some, though, I'd love to see it.

Is it a good idea to check for past crimes, insanity or just plain stupidity when the sale of firearms is involved?
Answer the query, please.

QUOTE(mjda @ Apr 26 2013, 04:59 PM) That wasn't an argument. It was my opinion. I also gave you a chance to persuade that opinion. Unfortunately, you would rather call my opinion insane and move on. I think I'll follow that suite and stick to having these types of discussions with people who actually want to provide facts and legitimate statements trying to make me see their point of view, rather than those who are just looking to take stabs at my personal opinion. Fair enough . . .
Did you read the title? They took this vote under filibuster rules. Rules that were initiated by the NRA and their contributaries.
I loathe the sanctimoniousness that the Right tends to bellow about the Constitution. How about majority rules? 51 votes, that is a majority. The amendment would have passed without their childish manipulations of Senate rules.
Collect Hard!, RGBII*by the way, my word was inane, not insane. There is a difference,

Look I am sorry, but IMO our whole 2nd amendment right has been stretched further than my stretch Armstrong doll in the 70s! I am all for hunters owning guns to hunt, but hunters don't need AKs firing 50 rounds a second to take down a deer, those are meant for killing people and lots of them. If you loose a relative (not even a close one) by a handgun for the less than $30 on their person, you realize the stupidity of gun ownership in this country. I know a criminal committed the act, but where did the gun come from? The bigger issue for me is how little value is put on life because of the availability of guns. Now kids in school settle petty disputes with gun fire rather than fisticuffs, with no understanding of the value of life. I am not looking for an argument, just hope and pray your family is never on the opposite side of a horrific act from gun violence! This video shows just how far things can go over something somewhat petty: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeMSer2RQv4This post has been edited by northicehero99: Apr 27 2013, 07:29 AM

I agree completely with what you're saying, Brian. I wouldn't care if AR-15s were banned, either. I, personally, don't own one and probably never will. I simply don't see a need for it, personally. For me it's not the ban on the AR-15 that bothers me, as much as it is this government just further trying to control what I can/can't do. That said, what do you (honestly) think a ban on assault rifles will do to prevent assault rifles? Do you think banning them will get rid of them? Drugs are illegal. Heck, we have a "war on drugs". They're still here. They also kill more people than rifles do. Drunk driving is illegal. Does that mean we don't have drunk drivers? Nope! In fact, drunk driving kills a LOT more people than rifles do!! Where is the outrage to strengthen the penalty for driving intoxicated!? I'm sure you've all heard both of those comparisons before. I'm also sure they're deemed as "inane" comparisons that will simply be disregarded. However, they are the facts. Another fact is that neither drugs nor driving a vehicle are rights explicitly given to us by our founding fathers to save ourselves from a tyrant government. Why the call for a ban on assault rifles anyways? According to our own FBI, you're more likely to be killed by hands, fists, feet, etc than you are by a rifle. You're more likely to be killed by a blunt object (such as a bat, or hammer) than a rifle. You're over 5 times more likely to be killed by a knife than a rifle. You're also more likely to be killed by a shotgun than a rifle. So why are we talking about banning rifles? Why not ban knives and shotguns? If you think banning guns will get rid of them, you're sadly mistaken. If you think a global background checks is about preventing unlawful citizens from buying guns, you're also sadly mistaken.
