The Official BKB Box Break Club - June 09

Introduction


Hey guys it's time for the Big Break. This is the two year anniversary of the the TCC Basketball Group Box Break. This month the fees are going up to $100/spot as this is a special break, but will go back down next month. This will make for $1,000 in boxes to break.

How it Works (Official Rules)

Each member pays $100 ($102 if paying via PayPal). That covers about $1,000 in boxes, shipping, and supplies. You get one team (you cannot take a team that has already been taken) of your choice. The remaining 20 teams go to the members via a draft. This gives you a total of three teams. Every single card pulled out of a box that has a player from one of your three teams goes to you. The box breaks are done via a video break, so there is no question as to what was pulled.

Fees are due by the 15th. The boxes are ordered and the draft begins as soon as all fees are collected. As soon as the draft completes and the boxes are in, the video breaks are done. The cards are then shipped out by the box breaker as soon as the results have been posted. We decide as a group what boxes to break each month.

In regards to box selection, I usually try to push for a Topps product, but their just really aren't any great Topps products out right now. Also, since there were no rookie exclusives I don't see the need for Topps. I really like the products suggested above.

I haven't looked at prices, but didn't we do OK with 07/08 Echelon? I'd still like to see at least one topps product since we've only broken 1 box of topps products in the last 3 or 4 months.

You have a valid point, so if you want Echelon that's fine by me. Blowout doesn't have any Echelon in stock at the moment, but at Dave and Adams it's about $150.

Basically we would be swapping a box of Chronology ($153) for Echelon ($150). Between the two I think Chronology is the better product, but I do see your side. Personally, the only advantage I see to Echelon is the shot at an Oden or Wade auto.

I have nothing against Topps products, I just don't think their releases of late are worth the money (Treasury, Signature, Hardwood, Murad... just not that good). You also need to consider that if we should happen to pull a redemption out of Echelon Topps will not honor it. You will end up with a Topps Signature auto instead of whatever the Echelon redemption should have been.

So how does this list sound to everyone?

(1) 2008-09 UD Black $230 (2 Hits)
(1) 2007-08 Chronology $154 (4-5 Hits)
(1) 2007-08 Topps Echelon $150 (4 Hits)
(2) 2008-09 UD Premier $480 (10-12 Hits)

That comes to $1014. Blowout has the best price on Black and Chronology, but Blowout does not have Echelon or Premier in stock. Dacardworld.com has Echeclon and Premier. The prices on these boxes have all gone up in the last week.

Black is cheaper, so maybe we want two boxes of Black and one of Premier? However, a box of Premier has 4 hits as apposed to Black's 2 hits.

Hey guys, I don't think that D3foot10k is going to be in this month due to his CTO restriction. He hasn't been on since 5-26-09. I hope that everything is okay with him and his family. With that being said, Booth9919 is first on the waiting list for the Bulls. Booth9919 will take the Bulls for this break. That now leaves one spot still open. Fourkids was interested in a spot, so I'll send him a PM to see if he's still interested.

I'll keep everybody posted.

What about droppin the black and getting another box of premier, That would be more hits for the buck and I think a better shot at hitting something nice

Currently Premier is more expensive (and harder to find) than Black. I did just find a good price for both at www.dcssportscards.com. Currently it doesn't look like Blowout or Dacardowrld.com have premier in stock.

I don't want to give up the Black to be honest. My favorite part of the big break is the very high risk product. Premier isn't exactly a sure bet, but I'd really rather not lose the Black.

I agree on the high risk box, such as Black. There is a better chance to pull a much nicer card than a lower end box. Premier is getting harder to find for some reason also. I asmlso Pm'd Fourkkids about the open slot burt he doesn't want to spend that much on a break this month, so that means that we still have one slot open.

I found that both www.dcssportscards.com and www.sccentral.com have both black and Premier for decent prices. I have ordered from both in the past and haven't had a problem. I still prefer blowout, but if they don't have the boxes the two aforementioned sites will work.

Come on people, lets get some payments in so we can get these boxes ordered before they become to scarce to find.

Hey Matt,

I saw the pricing you posted. Didn't we swap out one box of Chronology for a box of Echelon? I prefer the all Upper Deck break, but I think mixing in the Topps made the others happier.

Speaking of others... where has everyone gone? I think you and I are having our own conversation in this thread.

Mike, you are right about the Echelon. I'm sorry but that slipped my mind. I'll get the prices for that and update. I don't know where everybody is. Basketball has slowed to a micro crawl here.

Hey guys, in the past few days I've seen about 4 box breaks of Premier that didn't have any autos at all. How about only breaking one box of Premier and switching the other out for another Chronology plus we could add another box with the extra $100 that we would have.

I'm fine with that. Plus, since I'm going to buy the box of Black, that's a few more dollars to put into an extra box. Instead of contributing $205 or so, I'm putting in $230. That would give us about an extra $125.

pavi, booth, and kinfisher good to hear from you guys. What about Topps signature? Yeah, the cards have zero sell and trade value, but this break is all about the PC items anyway right? blowout currently has signature for $100.99. That would use up the $100, bring in another Topps product, and give us a decent chance at an 'A' level autograph.

That would make the break:
- UD Premier $240 (dcssportscards)
- UD Black - $226 (blowout)
- UD Chronology - $142 (dcssportscards)
- Topps Echelon - $150 (dacardworld)
- Topps Signature - $97 (dcssportscards)

Total: $855... we could throw in a second box of Chronology making it $997 or drop the Signature and do a second box of Black or Premier.

on other note, from what i heard there will still be some nba cards produced by upperdeck and topps with their signed players ;

No, I have not received the sheet. I email them at the beginning of every month and every month they respond with "we'll be sending it out shortly". I don't know if it will ever come. I use to check for an update on the Upper Deck redemption website everyday. I don't bother to check anymore.

I know that Upper Deck is releasing a new set for the 09-10 season in September. It is supposed to have the largest auto checklist of any Upper Deck set. I think it will be UD's version of Signature.

I wouldn't be surprised to see sets that don't feature the NBA logos kind of like what Donruss Threads was like last year. I know that UD just signed a contract with Wade.

After seeing what Panini did to Prestige, I'm not to excited about what is up and coming for us basketball collectors.

Yep Mike, Brittany is hoping for a Dr. J auto I think. Thanks for ordering the Black Box. If Mike joins also, that means that the Knicks will be gone also. There are a ton of Knick autos in Chronology.

The prices you see are book value. Of course I'd sell well below that. If you see anything you like, just make the best offer you can. I will sell the lower end game used pretty cheap if you're looking to buy at least a few of them.

I couldn't agree more. I don't really care what comes out of the rest of the break: I've got what I was after. Of course another LeBron wouldn't hurt my feelings a bit.

For the majority of my two years in this break I haven't done very well at all. Then all of a sudden the last three months have been all me.

I've got what I want, now I hope we see the Jordan, Bird, and other big names for you guys.

There's no way Kobe is winning another title this year. The Spurs just got better in the west with RJ, even though we still need a couple of 5's. Which will happen soon as soon as Sheed becomes a free agent and possibly Marcin Gortat. And if they get by the Spurs, Shaq & Lebron will lay the proverbial smack down on Kobe. I can't wait until next season.
