I'm thinking about starting another hobby...metal detecting! It seems really fun and interesting. Does anyone on here do it? Any suggestions for a metal dector for around $200?

I don't do it, but I read a lot about it on various forums... Anyway, for just getting into it, people swear by the Garrett Ace 250 (it's about $200-215).

I personally don't have time for it, but wish I did.

as I don't own the domain, have that blog, or rip much wax these days.

Thank you!
And after doing a little browing myself, I have found that that model is also very popular. It sounds like a really fun hobby to get into. One problem I can think of though, would be finding places to do it that isnt banned by some type of law, nowadays. Other that that, it seems...almost as good as card collecting! laugh.gif

Yes, federal parks are off limits unless you want to risk losing your car, detector and possibly more. State parks you need to check with the ranger of the park or the park office. Some of them allow it, some prohibit it as they don't want hundreds of holes left.

I used to do it. I used a Bounty Hunter, Whites, and a few Garretts. My favorite was the Whites as that was the one I found the most with. Cannot remember the model number but I think it is a 5000, sitting in my closet. As for getting a detector do your research first. I bought several via local classifieds/flea markets and made/wasted money. I bought my Bounty Hunter from Kelly Co. Link: http://www.kellycodetectors.com/indexmain....CFQHX5wodxD7jAQ
Bought my White's from someone who was upgrading to a better White's, probably the best detector I ever owned and the price was right.

When I was into it Kelly Co. seemed to have the best prices for a new one. However, my suggestion for you would be to find a decently priced used one, but research it first. People think you find hundreds of $s with them, which is not true, some people get lucky, some don't. I found probably $300-500 in change, some silver coins (not a lot), and several rings. I invested probably $600 or more in detectors, some of which I got taken on. Bought a low end to start out for $100 and it was fun but did not find a ton, but it paid for itself. Upgraded (I thought) to a "higher" Garrett, only to find out it was an older model and less effective than my first one.

As for getting into it, look for a local club in your area. Usually the meetings are free and you can join and get their newsletter. I belonged to the North Pittsburgh Past Finders organization here. They still exist, but I just don't have time for the hobby. There are members at these clubs that are a wealth of information as to where to go or not go, what detectors work best, etc. Every soil condition is different, so what might work here, may not work as well where you are.

I can answer any questions you have, post them here or pm me.
