QUOTE(EB31 @ Jun 1 2006, 01:29 PM) Unreal....way for them to take something decent and turn into trash. I agree. Thing is I disagree with Batwoman become a you-know-what for several reasons, but mostly because, no matter what people say, comics appeal to kids; and kids don't need to read about or see that stuff.

QUOTE(sahetu @ Jun 1 2006, 03:00 PM) I don't see the big deal either, nor being able to say what she is or isn't. Do you want a list of superheroes that are? There are quite a few. I remember when Northstar "came out" years ago, it was such a big deal and ended up being the only issue of Alpha Flight worth anything. Who cares?

QUOTE(sahetu @ Jun 1 2006, 02:00 PM) I don't see the big deal either, nor being able to say what she is or isn't. Do you want a list of superheroes that are? There are quite a few. It's a fact of life, in comics - television - movies - literature (as far back as ancient times) or in the real world. I don't see it as a big deal other than that traditional Batwoman wasn't a lesbian. There are HUGE Batwoman fans who are upset over the change, simply because it isn't within the characters "character." As for not saying the word lesbian: I kept it out of posts in case Bob or any other Mods deemed it inappropriate since this is a site being used by people of all ages. Just imagine if Batman came out of the closet: many people would be up-in-arms over it, even if it was a new person donning the Caped Crusader's gear. I'm huge into comics, so I could give you a list of all the homosexual super heroes, too. However, many of those were either created that way or we never knew their sexual orientation. QUOTE And I'd like to add that not all comics are geared towards children. Comics have ratings too. A child cannot buy a comic that is intended for mature readers.
Another statistic being that comics are primarily bought by adults - not for their kids and not by children. That is why there is an increase in titles geared towards adults.
Like I said, this isn't new... Yes, and certain video games, CDs and DVDs aren't meant to be sold to children either, but they are. Though there has been a surge in adults getting into the comic realm the past decade or so, comics still appeal to children greatly. They're colorful, have their superheroes in them, are cheap and are fun to trade and collect. Not every shop owner or 7-11 clerk will ID a kid or even take a look at the rating. And honestly, once some kids find out the new Batwoman is a lesbian, they will seek out those issues — something adults will do, too. Which brings me to my next point... QUOTE You make a good point. But, I think it could be done in a tasteful way as to educate kids. The comic, as I understand it, has a diverse group. I don't know. I guess we'll see how it does. Very true. Writers and artists have dealt with issues like drug abuse, sexual abuse, criminal activity and so on very well in the past, and I do believe DC will handle it gently. And I also understand that some topics, like sexual assault, may be more catastrophic to a young reader than, say, Batwoman being a lesbian. The issue isn't the comic at that point: it's the parents. If the parents monitor, understand and follow the things their children are into, everything is fine. But we live in the real world, and most importantly America, where parents don't always do what they're supposed to. The situation then falls into the seller's lap: know the ratings, know the rules and know the penalties. If they fail to do those things, they fail the children (and those parents who try their best). Like you said: we'll see how it pans out.
