Collector Zone _ OpenChecklist _ Where is everyone?

Posted by: msw_sportscards Dec 15 2008, 01:00 PM

TCC has over 24,000 members. Open Checklist has slightly over 2000. Where is everyone? Don't you get that not only does it help you keep track of your cards but it will also make trading easier? Register today...and get those cards entered. I'm tired of mulling through buckets(photo that is) of endless crap that I have no need for. You should be too. Register, enter, go and tell people everywhere.

I've already entered all my cards into a local database, so that I can export lists on demand. I have no interest in re-entering them elsewhere.

Great idea for those who don't have a tradelist tho wink.gif

Ahh, but can you local database auto match your wantlist to other traders tradelist?

Posted by: mvpujols#5 Dec 15 2008, 05:54 PM

question: How do i list cards into my checklists?

And what if the player isnt in their database, what do i do?

Posted by: msw_sportscards Dec 15 2008, 06:08 PM

Exactly. Efficiency at its finest....as well as internet trading at its finest.

The Checklist system is greatly outdated.
If an update was applied, I would be MUCH more inclined to use it.

Any help to my question?

Patience ?

First find the checklist you want to add cards to. Use the Keyword search or the Search / Browse option.

Click on My Set Checklist, then check the cards you are adding and the quantity.

Hit submit.

They'll be added to your inventory.

I feel your pain when it comes to already having the cards in a database and not wanting to enter them. Wouldn't it be great if someone wrote a script so already existing collections could be exported directly into OpenChecklist? I, too, already have my other cards in other databases. However, I think the automatch feature makes entering them, again, worth the effort.

Obviously, newer sets need to be added. That doesn't diminish the merits of this program. However, with such little interest in it thus far (or just lack of collectors knowing that it's available), what is the motivation for the leaders of this project to update with newer sets/players? If we get behind it and use it, perhaps the project coordinators will feel more motivated to spend their time working on this excellent resource. Not only is it useful on TCC....it is also useful across all the trading forums and would give us access to everyone's tradelists/wantlist without having to waste time jumping to 5 different sites.

The problem with that idea is that the data stored in another database or spreadsheet might not match up well with the structured data stored in the OpenChecklist database. One of the additional goals of OpenChecklist is to establish a universal format for storing checklists.

Have you registered for Open Checklist? It's a great way to keep track of the cards you have, have to trade, and want. It also has tools so you can compare your wants with other members inventory. I suggest trying it out.

Marc

No I've never heard of it is it on this site or another site?

Here are the fields used to store players in the database:

First Name
Last Name
Given Name
Nicknames
Birth Date
Sport or Subject

Feel free to provide this information for a player and we can then add that player. If you can provide a link to the source(s) used to determine the information, that would be ideal.

My wantlist isn't long enough for that to be a real problem laugh.gif

So far, not a single issue I'm looking for has turned up in a search...

I guess the real issue for me is, the simplicity of entering in my database with all its autolookups isn't matched at OC. If I set the cards in front of me, it takes about 3-5 seconds to make a new entry. When I do entry it's with the keyboard, not the mouse, so it seems cumbersome to me. That's just my preference I guess.

After spending some time there today, an additional issue is - it shows items in my inventory, but when I click to list them, nothing is there...is there an update process that must occur before my lists are updated?---found the reason for this...if I added a card from any set for the purpose of set building, that player is then added to an "Interest Flag" of some kind, even tho I was only interested in a single card. So when I remove the cards from my wantlist, they are not removed from other "Interest Flags" I have to go delete or modify my player name "interest" in them individually...

Interest updates are on a manual kickoff, but you can do it yourself in the My Tools section.

The exact "command" is:

My Tools: Update my Interests from Wantlist/Inventory

I did find that and used it in the tools, but it did not remove "my interest" from the player list - I had to go do that player name by player name. sad.gif

On that note tho, it is more useable than in the past, I have been able to update some wants and add inventory. smile.gif

Still needs a big update on names for Hockey, couldn't find any new names from 2003 forward..

What do you mean by "it did not remove my interest from the player list" ?

QUOTE(nerk01 @ Dec 17 2008, 04:11 PM)

Simplest way to describe it:

I add a card to my inventory or wantlist. It is the only card from the set, and only card for that player in my whole inventory/tradelist.

Run the update my interest from inventory/tradelist in tools.

This creates "interest flags" for the card set, the player.

Time goes along...I trade the card out of my inventory.

So I remove the entry for the card, and run the update my interest tool.

The entry disappears from the set inventory/tradelist rollup.

However, the entry for the player is not removed. It appears in the player rollup with 0 0 0. So I have to then go in and manually "remove interest" for that player record, then run the update my interest tool. Where I would have thought once no more cards for the player existed in wantlist/inventory that a cascade removal from the player rollup would occur.

So I guess the best way to describe form a data standpoint is there is no, or not correctly functioning, cascading update for that data update situation.

Hope that helps to describe it. unsure.gif

(It's not a huge deal now that I know what to do to resolve it.)

Posted by: bob_TCC Dec 18 2008, 03:05 PM

Thanks, snowblink. That is very helpful. wink.gif

My initial reaction is that I actually don't know that adding a card of a player should automatically assume an "interest" in the player. Eventually, you might find that you have an "interest" in just about every player (based on the size of your inventory) - even though you really only care about a handful of players.

-Bob

Posted by: snowblink Dec 18 2008, 03:11 PM

That's what I thought at first too, although from a programming standpoint I understand why those "interest flags" are important for producing the inventory/wantlist snapshot rollups, and for search purposes.

That's why I'm a bug reporter, not a programmer. laugh.gif

Thanks for the detailed description.

I'll first say that our use of the term "interest" is being used loosely.

It does not mean you have a collecting interest. That is set differently.

I know of the bug and I bet if you run the tool again it will clear it up. I pushed out a fix last night that cleared it for me. A confirmation of that would be awesome.

I added a new card entry into inventory, and ran the update tool.

The card shows up in the Inventory roll-ups for:
Brand
Manufacturer
Set
Subject

But now doesn't show up in the Player/Character roll-up. In this case, since a card exists in my inventory for that Player I want to see an entry in that roll-up. So it's sort of all the way the other way now...

Posted by: snowblink Dec 18 2008, 03:55 PM

I made a new entry into my Wantlist with the same result, no entry on the Player rollup. Just wanted to make sure it was consistent.

Which player card are you talking about?

Be aware that if we have a card in the system it does not mean we have the "player" in the system.
