QUOTE(sahetu @ May 19 2010, 06:02 PM) Boycotts can go both ways. Both sides are wrong, really. Boycotting electricity and power is a bit different (in my opinion) than boycotting tourism/events/etc.

QUOTE(stlbaseball15 @ May 19 2010, 08:24 PM) LA is taking a stand against racial profiling. Just like Arizona is taking a stand against people who are breaking the law. QUOTE(stlbaseball15) Fights come with counterattacks. L.A. found that out.

QUOTE(dviv17 @ May 19 2010, 08:36 PM) Mjda, you seem to love to emphatically express this "breaking of the law."
Whatever your beliefs on that may be, Arizona is not going about this the right way. Do you honestly believe racial profiling is acceptable? I don't see it as racial profiling. I'm not the one slinging that phrase around. That is the phrase created by those who want to do anything they can to stop this law because it's one they don't agree with and wish to simply ignore it. If only we had the liberty to ignore any other laws we wanted and go unpunished. And yes, I will continue to emphasize the fact that these illegals are "breaking the law", as long as they continue to do so. QUOTE(dviv17) Besides, we need many of these illegals who will do the work that most Americans will not "stoop down to." What work are you talking about? How many unemployed Americans have you talked to that said they'd rather not have a job than do this work you're talking about? I would do any job I had to do to provide for my family. One other member of these forums said he would love to have any job. I'm absolutely certain we're not the only ones.

QUOTE(Luke2411 @ May 19 2010, 10:52 PM) Two things: First, have any of you actually read the Arizona bill? Do you even know what it really says? Or are you basing your "racial profiling" claims on what you've heard people who don't like the bill claim? Have they even read the bill? The Obama Administration hasn't read the bill. HolderNapolitanoCrowleySecond, how is it wrong for Arizona to impose an economic boycott on a city whose city council has voted to impose an economic boycott on them? Tit-for-tat. It's an age old strategy. Cutting power is more than an economic boycott; tell that to the 25% of regular individuals in LA who rely on that electricity each day.

Like the bill, do not like the bill...
The fact to me is this. LA city council (rightly or not) does not like the law passed in the state of Arizona. They have chosen by a majority vote to boycott millions of dollars of business or travel and tourism to the state of Arizona. However, they still want the very state they are boycotting to provide the electric they need to get by. Arizona, has decided to “shut off the lights” as it is their right to do much like it is the right of the LA City council to boycott a state because they do not agree with the law. Frankly, if someone was costing me millions of dollars why would I help them out.
To clarify my stance I am not pro or against the law. I am still in debate. Here is why. I do not believe illegal immigrants should be allowed to be in this country and use the country for their needs without contributing to the tax system, local economy etc… FYI, I lived in Arizona for 6 years including 3 years in Tucson.. A short hop to the border away where we had lots of people that lived in Mexico, slipped across to work, and took money that could be put back into our economy and brought it to Mexico to spend. However, I cannot think of a race-neutral criteria to identify who is lawfully in the United States, things like a language, skin color, clothes or person's proximity to the US/Mexico border seem to be the things folks would use otherwise a 75 year old white lady would be stopped. Now if they made the law to check for proof of citizenship of every person they stop in the commission of any kind of offense or traffic violation and made everyone in the state carry proof whether it be SS card, green card, etc. then maybe… I am torn.
Maybe, just maybe, all the uproar over the Arizona bill will cause the federal government to complete and apply a new immigration policy… If that occurs I can only assume Arizona would rescind the law.
I am hunting for the following:(Gu/Au)- NYY: Jeter, Mattingly, vintage and HOF Yankees -If you know me anything is possible but you have to know the secret stuff I will bite on.

So, I asked two questions:
Has anyone that is bashing the Arizona bill in this thread actually read the bill?
Does anyone know how much of Arizona's economy is made up of tourism?
It would seem to me that if you are going to speak critically of a piece of legislation you should have actually read that piece of legislation instead of relying on the words of other people, who also have apparently not read the piece of legislation. This bill is only 10 pages long, so it's not that difficult to download it off the web and read it.
It would also seem to me that if you are going to claim that Arizona denying LA some electricity is some how more "wrong" than LA boycotting Arizona's tourist industry because LA gets 25% of its electricity from Arizona and boy that just sounds like a whole bunch and would hurt a lot of people, you should know what kind of real impact LA's boycott of Arizona would have as well. It only seems right that if you're going to start comparing one to another you would actually have some real facts to compare.
And yet, those two very logical questions have gone unanswered. It seems that when you start asking people to use real information and facts to inform their opinions, rather than just gut feeling and emotional response, they just clam up.
Hopefully, people have just been too busy to answer the questions yet. Let's hope that's true.
