QUOTE(dodgerblue38501 @ Oct 23 2007, 10:59 PM) Excellent point my friend. I like any dealer have fallen into this trap. I have had similiar instances happen to me just like the scenario you described with the SP ARod RC. When I started setting up at shows and flea markets in the early 90s as a junior high student things were very much different. I don't ever recall anyone asking me to take less for anything on my table. I also don't recall anyone continually asking me for the hottest and rarest cards of the day only to offer 1/100 of BV. We all know that this hobby that we love so much has undergone a huge amount of changes in the last 10-15 years. Sometimes I miss those days. Then I look at the 50 monster boxes of 1985-1992 commons in my closet and I snap back to reality. I just think for whatever reason there is a certain amount of distrust in the collector to dealer relationship. I try to give everyone a clean slate that walks into my shop. I want to get to know them. I want to know who they collect. I want to help them add to their collection. I want to earn their business and respect. Most of all though I want them to understand the fact that there are still some good dealers that will treat them right. Thanks, I think any dealer has pre-judged in the minimum at least once, it's actually natural. Now when I do shows I try to come in with no expectations, when someone comes to the table I don't assume anything either way. Your right, the industry has changed immensely since the 90's. Those were the boom years of the industry. It's funny how the boom years were without autos & game used back then, it's simply was about the "Rookie" card or rare insert. It amazes me how well wax still sells when the Card companies are producing 10-15 lines putting 3-4 cards per pack & charging $10 or more for that pack. I remember when there was 15 cards per pack. The sad thing is the young kid who has to save 3-4 weeks worth of allowance to buy ONE pack of 3-4 cards. There are less kids in the hobby today than ever, the only plus is the ones that are involved are more serious/knowledgable than they were in the 90's but there is less so it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the hobby. |

I have been a dealer since 1987, doing shows & owning my own shop(1990-1994), While the original poster has some valid points his delivery & attitude is abysmal. If it comes out that clear in typing online I can only imagine how clear & miserable it is in person between body language & conversation.
The dealers already lost with the pre-conceived judgement in looking at everyone at this particular show as "mopes". That's horrible. Stop doing that show if it's that bad. Now I won't lie, there are certain individuals that I see at all the shows, they have a set routine, come around, look, ask questions & usually leave the show without spending a cent. They aren't hurting anyone. This is America. They are free to do that if they please. I'm not sure how much fun that actually is but it's there perogative. To get a pre-conceived attitude or get that miserable over something/someone like that is unhealthy & it might be time to hang up your tax number. That's life. Some people spend some people don't.
Dodgerblue pointed out the one customer who always inquires about the lower production cards but then lowballs an offer, etc. We all as dealers know this guy & if it makes you feel better dodgerblue every show/town/store has at least one. My "guy" comes to the show always with an attache case that never gets opened. I'm going to put on my psychiatrists cap for a second, I think these guys do this routine to make themselves feel more involved, more important. I think deep down they have some self esteem issues. I wouldn't be shocked if that guy's attache case opened by accident that a bunch of 1992 Fleer Football cards would pile out. LOL. We as dealers should always remember though that this is America, We are free to do as we choose as long as it's legal & not hurting anybody.
The worst thing you can do as a dealer is pre-conceive someone or judge them. I learned a great lesson one time, there was a kid about ten years old that would always come around to my table, ask to look at cards, examine them & hand them back. After 3 shows of doing this I judged him to be a "looker" someone who will just look. Now about the 4th show he came by again, ask to see a few cards, handed them back. In my head I said "Yep,same routine different show" just as I thought that he pulls his wallet out & says "I'll take the Arod SP rook". A $100 sale. If at any point I ever got rude with that young man the previous 3 times he was at my table that sale would've never occured. Sometimes you just never know & as a dealer you should try your darndest never to prejudge anyone at any age. |
