Collector Zone _ Entertainment News _ The TCC video gaming topic

Posted by: ffman Mar 16 2009, 06:37 PM

I know there are various video gaming threads all around this site (some here, some in "Gaming", etc), but I don't see enough game talk. Feel free to chime in with what you are playing or thinking about getting.

Last Thursday I picked up Call of Duty 4 for the Xbox 360. Best Buy was running a $40 sale so I used the advertisement for a price match at Wal-Mart. Boy, is this game good! Weapons and combat just feel right, and it is very cool have a competent "team" to support you. I finished the campaign on normal in just over a day but I began to play through it again on "Hardened" difficulty.

My roommate and I have been playing Resident Evil 5 (when I'm not in bed from this strep that seemingly won't go away).. It's terrifying, it's scary, and it's amazing. So good.

Posted by: ffman Mar 17 2009, 12:35 PM

Haven't played RE 5. RE 4 is one of my favorite games though.

Posted by: Kmart6nets Mar 17 2009, 02:33 PM

Try out the demo if you can... Very cool stuff.

Posted by: Stlouisrams1600 Mar 17 2009, 02:49 PM

I played video games for the first time in 2 months last weekend. At my friends house we play Halo 3 On Xbox Live.

Posted by: ffman Mar 17 2009, 02:51 PM

Halo 3 was very fun on co-op. mvpujols#5 and I have played through it and Gears of War all the way through on co-op (partially on CoD 5).

I'm considering trying the new Grand Theft Auto for the Nintendo DS.

Edit: If I can get it. Wal-Mart shows it as not being sold in stores, only online. Weird for a game that could be such a good seller....

Posted by: ffman Mar 17 2009, 09:12 PM

I would if I was connected to Live but I'm not - I don't have the quickest internet connection at home.

I would like to get RE 5 at some time but there are other games I would like to try first - primarily Gears of War 2, maybe GTA 4, Dead Rising, Assassin's Creed, etc.

COD 4 is waaaaaaay better than COD 5, IMO, although all my friends will only play COD 5. I have PS3, or I'd ask for your online tag... sad.gif

Posted by: ffman Mar 18 2009, 11:24 AM

Don't have one any way. Haven't jumped into online gaming yet!

Setting up Unreal Tournament 2003 on the PC. Almost everyone finally has a copy since they can be picked up for $5...will see how it goes the next few nights.

Update: Going real well, it's even smoother than the last iteration with 5 players on the connection.

Grabbed MLB 09 The Show and Street Fighter 4 last week for PS3, loving MLB so far havent even touched street fighter yet because of it tongue.gif

agreed. In part because ever year the rights to make the game switch back and forth between companies, and this year the crappy company made COD 5. I actually play COD 3 some, lol.

Posted by: ffman Mar 22 2009, 07:58 PM

COD 4 is a great game.

I'm actually doing a second run-through which is rare for me (this fast). Hardened difficulty didn't give me much trouble until the final part of "One shot, one kill" where I am struggling. I gave up there and played through the first couple of levels successfully on Veteran (the hardest difficulty).

The final level of COD 4 (Mile High Club) is one of my favorite levels of any video games in recent memory. Short and sweet.

I am absolutely addicted to Guitar Hero and Rock Band. I'm hoping to have enough money to buy a PS III soon so I can get the Metallica version of Guitar Hero when it releases.

Posted by: ffman Mar 22 2009, 08:26 PM

I've played quite a bit of GH II and GH III. I have a Guitar Hero topic around here somewhere.

I'd like to play GH: World Tour or Rock Band but I can't justify nearly $200 for all of the accessories.

I used to watch my friend play Unreal Tourney 04 back when it was new. That game was awesome.

I'm currently playing (and have been playing):
Counter-Strike: Source on PC

and for console: Dragon Quest VIII on PS2.

Posted by: ffman Mar 24 2009, 04:36 PM

I've put close to 150 hours into that game but haven't completed it.

The last I played I was at the final dungeon but didn't have the patience to beat it..

Do you like it? I love it and am having a lot of fun with it. I'm 41 hours into it and am at the Dark Ruins about to find Dhoulmagus. (Just after Trodain w/ Prince Charmles) You have to be close because I knew someone who beat it in 130 hours and someone who beat it in 80 hours.

Posted by: ffman Mar 25 2009, 06:09 PM

I enjoyed it. Random battles got a tad annoying (since the world was so huge) and I occasionally had trouble keeping even gold for the latest equipment. I did finish the Monster Arena, which got frustrating toward the end.

A good deal of my 150 hours is "idle time" - ie, me leaving the game on while going into another room to check the computer.

Dragon Quest is on the DS. They remade IV and V (which were on the NES and SNES) and put them on the DS. They got great reviews, 9/10's on most sites. And the new one Dragon Quest IX is gonna be DS only which comes out late this year.

Posted by: ffman Mar 26 2009, 07:48 PM

I considered trying to get one of those but the local Wal-Mart (where I work and buy my games due to convenience) doesn't carry either game.

Agree with you on this. I was really disappointed with WAW, and still play COD 4. Good news is the next modern warfare is on the way, and it's being developed by Infinity Ward, who made COD 2 and 4. They dropped the COD name completely and its going to just be called Modern Warfare 2. Release date of November 11 09.

Im already excited biggrin.gif

You don't have to buy all of the accessories. You can get just the disc and play guitar to both of them. I don't know if the older guitars for GH are compatible but I know that the newer guitars can be used to play Rock Band.

Posted by: ffman Mar 29 2009, 12:59 PM

That is an idea.

I think the GH III controller might work with World Tour.

There's simply too much out there for me to easily decide what game(s) I want to go with. If World Tour sees a price drop down from $60 I might look at it in the future.

Oh has the COD series ever fallen. I don't think I'll ever see the days of COD and COD:UO again. Such good games.

Posted by: ffman Apr 22 2009, 02:51 PM

I'm trying to decide whether or not to purchase a new Xbox 360 game.

The reasonable answer would be to get nothing, especially considering I might have to go to the doctor for this cold/sinus infection/whatever.

But, I'm liking these three:

- Fallout 3
- Fable 2
- Assassin's Creed (only $30)

Edit: Nah, I think I'll just stick with Oblivion. Just getting into it again and it's a great game.

Posted by: michiganmaniac94 Apr 22 2009, 03:26 PM

I also play COD4 Online for XBOX. Way better then COD5 And MVP 2005 is also a sick baseball game. Other oldschool game I like is NBA Live 2005!

HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE!!!! Was shopping for something for my son's birthday and was looking for some PS2 games that he didn't have and I spied something that I thought was going to be released just for PS3. Guitar Hero Metallica is out for PS2. That will be one of his presents as he loves to play GH and Rock Band probably more than I do!!!!

Posted by: ffman May 11 2009, 05:13 PM

Just picked up a game for the Xbox 360 which I've been trying to find for a good while:

The Orange Box - contains Half-Life 2, HL 2 Episode 1/2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2.

A few months ago I could find it at Wal-Mart, but this was before I had my Xbox 360. Now the local Wal-Mart doesn't carry it at all. Today after exchanging old college books I found it at.....the campus bookstore! It was priced $10 above the regular retail price ($30 rather than $20), but five games (four for me....I don't do online yet) for $30 is good.

That's cool. It's not as good as it could be though because a lot of the games don't work well. (if they do work.)

Games I'm playing right now:

Dragon Quest VIII - PS2
FarCry - PC

and I only play this occasionally since I already beat it, Resident Evil 5.

Oh, I have it on PC so I don't have the problem of Live (which I don't and will never have)

Does anyone else play online games on PC or do you guys all do consoles online? (by online I mean COD, Counter-Strike, World of Warcraft etc. not mini games)

I have played this a few times. It is pretty fun.

There's a deal going on at Gamestop right now that you can trade in a PS2 and any three games to get $100 off a PS3. They have another deal that you can trade in anything and get and additonal 30% bonus toward a Wii.

Posted by: Dynasty1254 Jun 2 2009, 09:47 PM

So did anyone watch/hear about E3? It's a really big game conference in LA where Sony, MS, and nintendo show off their upcoming games/systems. Some of the highlights for me were modern warfare 2 getting demoed, new psp, metal gear solid finnaly coming to x360, a new halo announced and L4D2. Sony and MS also showed off motion control things. What did you guys think of the announcements/demos?

Posted by: ffman Jun 2 2009, 09:50 PM

E3 had some big announcements altogether.

Don't know what to think of Project Natal by Microsoft. It could lead to potentially amazing things but personally, I want an old-fashioned controller when I PLAY a GAME.

I read up on a few great games that will be coming out....I was most amazed by some on the Wii. New Metroid, two new Marios, Red Steel 2, etc, etc.

I'm waiting for Bioshock 2, Mass Effect 2, and CoD MW 2 for Xbox 360 the most though..

I caught bits and pieces of it tonight. I loved the previews of Assassin's Creed 2, Ghostbusters, Forza Motorsport and Mass Effect 2. More than likely, I will probably be buying Ghostbusters when it debuts and renting or borrowing the others.

Cody, you need to expand your video game experience and invest in Live my friend. I'm on almost everyday sitting there puttering around on NHL 09 endlessly. sad.gif

Metal Gear Solid on 360.....*sigh*...seriously? See, that's why I hate Microsoft. MGS was and should always be a PS only franchise game. Imagine how mad halo players would be if that game went to PS3. (except Halo is a god awful game and MGS is legendary)

on a side note:

L4D2 looks awesome, and the new PSP looks terrible. Nintendo will always dominate any competitor in hand held combat.

Posted by: ffman Jun 4 2009, 07:47 PM

Halo is a great game - two completely different genres.

The same thing happened with Final Fantasy XIII.

You can't blame Microsoft - it's the game creator's decision where it goes. One of the older MGS games (Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance I think) was ported to the Xbox a while back, so this isn't a first.

Oh thats disappointing that even FF 13 will be on both now. Hopefully God of War 3 will stay PS3 exclusive as that is the game I'm most looking forward to this year

Posted by: Zimbow Jun 4 2009, 08:02 PM

God of War III and the God of War franchise will forever be with PS3 and Sony. As for Halo, personally I only play when my friends are online. They (Bungie) come out with cool games for double exp from Thursday til Sunday which are always fun. MGS is a sweet series, when money is laid in front of certain people or companies, they will usually take their franchise hits. If Halo were to go to PS3 it wouldn't make me not play it anymore considering there is nothing I can do about it.

Posted by: ffman Jun 4 2009, 08:19 PM

The only games I can't see going multi-platform are Nintendo's exclusives, especially Mario/Zelda. Of course, many probably thought the same thing about Sonic years ago.

Agree completely on the PSP. The joystick looks very awkwardly placed and the design is just plain ugly when slid open. And still no dual joysticks, way to go Sony. The price doesn't help either, $250 for 5 year old tech in a new case.

The MGS thing though is where I disagree. I for one, as a guy who only owns a 360, would not mind at all if Halo went multi-platform. In fact I would love to see exclusives done away with entirely and have one console and games, online services, and media that would work on one platform.

This is something I don't get. Will millions of other people enjoying the same game on a different console somehow make the game less enjoyable for you?
And by the way God of War III = a March 2010 release at earliest.

Posted by: ffman Jun 4 2009, 08:39 PM

That's a good idea theoretically but it would never work. No competition = significantly higher prices and no reason for a high quality effort or innovation.

Yup those are the problems. And the console companies hate the idea. On the other hand the developers would most likely support the idea, because it takes more money to produce for 2-4 platforms than just one. If the developers banded together and made it happen I believe we could see something like what I said, because without the games, the consoles are nothing.

Posted by: Zimbow Jun 4 2009, 10:32 PM

Halo was multi platformed when the first one was released. On the regular xbox as well as the PC.

CoD4 is a sweet game. I was totally turned off by it when it first released because I thought that it was "just another war game". Buddy of mine at school said I should look into it and it was nothing like the other COD titles. i.e. COD2, COD3. I do like World at War as well and have gotten the chance to play it on both 360 and PS3. Remarkable graphics+smooth gameplay= 10/10. wink.gif

As for the Modern Warfare 2 soon to be coming out, this game looks legit and a bit of a strategy game. I do like RPG's as well as FPS.

Posted by: ffman Jun 10 2009, 07:34 PM

Currently playing Gears of War 2, which I rented today.

I rented and really wanted to play Assassin's Creed. However, it wouldn't work - it played for about 15 minutes and froze in the same place twice. I returned it and exchanged it with Gears of War 2.

Good game, just too much profanity. I will probably finish the 3rd out of 5 chapters tonight.

GTA Chinatown Wars and the Castlevania games are the best games I've played on the DS.

Many of the old classic RPG remakes, such as:

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift
Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy Tactics
Chrono Trigger
Dragon Quest IV
Dragon Quest V
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker

I also heard that GTA Chinatown Wars was excellent.

Well 80% of the best games on the DS are RPGs. Just give one a try. Do it for me Tom, FOR ME! laugh.gif wink.gif tongue.gif

Posted by: Kmart6nets Jun 15 2009, 04:35 PM

laugh.gif - OK what if I try ONE... What's the best one you'd say for a newbie like me... one that is NOT Final Fantasy (these games make me insane).

Also, what's the best Zelda game for D/S? I'm sure there's something out there I need that involves Zelda.

Posted by: ffman Jun 15 2009, 06:33 PM

Tom - I did not care for the Zelda on DS. To control Link you had to use the stylus all the time. It was a good game, but I didn't have incentive to actually finish the game.

I've had three DS. Get one - get tired and sell it - repeat 3 times. laugh.gif I have my third, but altogether my mother plays it more than I do. The Castlevania games were great fun on the GBA; I had a hard time finding any for the DS. Castlevania: CotM was one of my favorite games of all time.

Posted by: Kmart6nets Jun 15 2009, 06:47 PM

Hmmm well I'm a bit of a Legend of Zelda nerd so I'll be getting it either way - hopefully I have a better time with it than you did.

Castlevania sounds like fun, maybe GTA, but I tend to lose interest in those games quickly, Mario, Zelda, a random RPG that I'll try and hate wink.gif - I'll search around online when I finally get it in (seeing her this weekend).

Mario Kart for DS released, I think?!?! blink.gif

Posted by: Zimbow Jun 15 2009, 07:25 PM

ATTENTION,,,ATTENTION,,,ATTENTION.

Xbox Live announced earlier this past week that they will be down starting 12:01am Tuesday morning for repairs and may take up to 24hrs.

I don't know if I can take such a thing happening. Ghostbusters releases tomorrow and I planned on playing online. sad.gif

Posted by: ffman Jun 15 2009, 07:34 PM

Ghostbusters looks good Zim. IGN reviewer gave it a 8.0/10, which is pretty good for a movie/franchise-based game. I would consider getting it but I stupidly dropped $40 on another game (Fable II, which isn't as good as I thought it would be). If I get another game it would be Assassin's Creed for $30.

Posted by: Kmart6nets Jun 15 2009, 07:38 PM

Oh, I also have Sonic's Ultimate Sega Genesis Collection coming in as well... 40 classic Sega Genesis titles! Can't wait!!

Posted by: Zimbow Jun 15 2009, 07:39 PM

That's because you have to play the first Fable, unless you already have. I thought Fable II was freakin sweet.

Posted by: ffman Jun 15 2009, 08:13 PM

I played and beat the original Fable - I thought it was a great game altogether.

Fable II is okay....just hard for me to get into right now. I think due to less playing time I'm more attracted to "shorter" games right now which throw you right into the action. For example, I beat Gears of War in two days recently. In the past, I would have hated a game as short as that game.

RPGs used to be my favorite type of game by far - the only one I've really truly ENJOYED for the 360 is Mass Effect. Oblivion is great, but it's almost too big.

Well. If your counting out Final Fantasy, I would definitely try Dragon Quest. They've made 3 for the DS:

Dragon Quest IV
Dragon Quest V
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker

I've heard that all 3 of these games are great.

P.S. If you like Zelda, I hear that Zelda Phantom Hourglass is a great game.

The Wii has quite a few great games either out or coming out. If it weren't for all of the duds constantly released I might have gotten a Wii over an Xbox 360.

In the future I will consider a Wii, possibly once a price drop occurs if it does.

Are any of you Xbox360 owners the ones who try to get all the gamer score out of a game? I mean, do you play a game until you get all the achievements?

Nope. I have pretty bad gamescores on most of my games, even the ones I've completed on normal difficulty.

Just completed Half-Life: Episode Two.

Overall, the Orange Box is a great deal for $20-30 (retails around $20, but I purchased for $30 since it's not at the local Wal-Mart). It contains Half-Life 2, Episode One, Episode Two, Portal, and Team Fortress.

Right now I'm going through Assassin's Creed which I finally picked up. I can tell it is going to be repetitive, but at least the exploration is somewhat fun in comparison to other games.

Older games I try to get all the achievements possible, for example; TMNT, Older Madden, Older Basketball. Basketball especially since games when 360 first released only had but 5 achievements. The most I have gotten with a game is 970 which is halo 3. I have a little over half of the achievements for it and the rest of them you have to do online team play.

She doesn't have the charger so I ordered one super-cheap on Amazon for like $3.27 delivered. She didn't have any D/S games I'm interested in (she only had Nintendogs and like Sims Pets or something)... All I have for it right now is Super Mario World 2 for Game Boy Advance.. which I'm almost done with already tongue.gif

I'm not going to get any games until the charger comes in and I beat Mario World 2, which should be by the end of the week... then game #1 will be the New Super Mario Bros.... biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I usually try to, but some games just have these achievements that you would have to be crazy to try and get. For example I'm playing Prototype right now and one of the achievements is to kill something like 53,000 enemies. I just finished the main story and saw that I was up to about 5000. Needless to say I'm not going to be getting 1000/1000 on that one.

The one I am most proud of getting 1000/1000 for is COD 4. Mile High Club on Veteran took me about 2 hours to finish and is the only time I have ever actually thrown the controller laugh.gif

OT: Has anyone else played Prototype? I just finished the main story and it was awesome despite not being perfect. Definitely recommend it to at least rent.

Still playing Dragon Quest 8. I'm at the very last dungeon and just have to face the end boss once I get through it. I'm really close to the end.

Also started playing Counter-Strike Source again and my DS Lite with GTA: Chinatown Wars just came in today.

Instead I'm giving ESPN NFL 2K5 a go once again, messing with the rosters to try to "update" them a little bit. They're not very accurate (in some case I'm just editing out older guys to change the name, or guessing stats with created players) but it works.

I got my Madden 10 fix this weekend playing a few games with mvpujols#5.

Altogether, it's pretty good but I'm glad I chose not to purchase it. The Extra Points show, from what I saw of it, is pretty bland. It also stinks that on semi-long plays you can't even watch the entire replay. I really couldn't notice a huge difference in the running game like has been reported, except that AP is an absolute beast altogether. The animations were excellent though; we updated the rosters online to include Favre and Vick. Favre's throwing animation was perfect.

ESPN NFL 2K5 with semi-updated rosters will do good enough for me.

I bought Madden 10 last week, and to say the least, I'm very disappointed with it. Will probably sell it and buy NCAA Football 10

seriously i think it was great. but once agian it was to over hyped. it wasn't as great as it sounded.

Passing is too difficult and the extra features (the very few that there are) suck. I had more fun with 09.

Posted by: ffman Aug 28 2009, 10:52 AM

I'm glad I didn't buy it.

It seemed improved over 09 from my brief time with it, but nothing I really noticed other than slightly better graphics and Pro-Tak.

I thought passing was slightly easier this year, but then again I was playing against human competition and not against the AI.

College begins tomorrow (senior year) which once again means less time for gaming.

Last week I began playing Halo 3 online. After first purchasing Halo 3 a few months ago I didn't care for online, but now that I've given it time it's pretty fun.

Last night I tried to progress a little further on Call of Duty 4 veteran difficulty. Following many attempts I completed "Hunted" (took a while to figure out how to get past the chopper at the end) and the level after it.

Posted by: metsfan2427 Aug 30 2009, 06:07 PM

sadly the same for me
Starting my Junior year of HS.
no more playing video games 6+ hrs a day.

Posted by: ffman Aug 30 2009, 06:09 PM

I left my 360 at home as I have a rougher course load (or so it seems).

I did bring my PS2 with ESPN NFL 2K5 and MLB Power Pros 2008.

It's much easier than trying to survive. I'm not the best COD player, so this was the way to go for me. Give it a few tries. Gotta be patient. Go prone and under the counter and face the doorway. Plant C4s or claymores or whatever around the booth, and when the chopper gets there, blow em, and make a run for Captain. Make sure to shoot the guy on the Ferris Wheel platform so he doesn't get you. Good Luck!

The new Need for Speed game is getting good reviews.

I don't know about the lack of a "chase" aspect of the series but it appears to get the "Speed" part very good.

And for DS fans:

A new Mario and Luigi RPG is being released next week and also looks to be good. Gotta love the massive amounts of humor in the series.

I've been done with NFS ever since Hot Pursuit 2 came out ages ago. NFS Underground was one of the worst racing gmaes I've ever played and it got a 55 from metacritic. (Metacritic takes reviews from all different sites and averages them out, in this case, NFSU got an average score of 55/100 out of about 20 or so reviews.)

Needless to say, I don't think the new NFS will be much better.

9.0 from IGN - it's going in a different direction (almost more of a simulation-type but still with an arcade feel).

Two of my favorite racers ever were Hot Pursuit and Hot Pursuit 2. I also enjoyed Underground and slightly Underground 2 - really enjoyed the customization options in both games.

I recommend buyin NHL 09. From the 10 demo, it's a very similar game. The only upgrades are a new game mode (playoffs), improved fights, and board play. NHL 09 is easily the best sports game I have every played, and NHL 10 I also expect to be a fantastic game. I just don't think it's worth $60 for a few (not very big) upgrades.

HUGE MISTAKE !! I meant to say UnderCOVER. Not Underground. I sort of liked Undergound 1 and 2. But Undercover is what I meant to say, the one that came out last year. That game sucked.

Grand Turismo is one intense (and in-depth) game. I didn't get into the series until Gran Turismo 3, but I played the heck of it and GT 4. However, I usually quit the game once I reached the Endurance races....something I never had the endurance for!

The concept of taking one car and upgrading is so alluring though. I had certain cars I continued to use even if better things came along. One of my favorites in either 3 or 4 was the Mitsubishi Lancer after upgrading.

Posted by: Luke2411 Sep 14 2009, 11:12 AM

I recently tried out two new (to me) video games.

I bought Ghostbusters for the Wii. It was very fun. The only problem was that it is a very short game, only about 5 hours or so of game time, but I had a blast catching ghosts and putting them into traps. The only drawback is, it's pretty easy to get through the game. I made it through with very little trouble. Now I didn't collect all the things I can collect, so you can always go back and try to do that.

The other game was Resident Evil: Archives. I didn't like it at all. A couple of things:

1. It was too dark. There were parts where I could literally see nothing. Maybe it's supposed to be that way because you're in a dark mansion, but it hurt my eyes.

2. What's with the typewriter ribbons? Why can't you just save every time you find a typewriter. I thought that was really dumb especially since it's so easy to get lost in the mansion, find a bunch of random stuff that you'd like to save for, and then you just get killed by a zombie and have to start all over again.

3. No one bothered to tell me that it's easier to start the game by being the woman.

Anyhow, those are my reviews.

Posted by: ffman Sep 14 2009, 03:44 PM

Thanks for posting Jeremy!

I have wanted to try Ghostbusters on the Xbox 360 but it isn't a priority for me right now.

If you want a good Resident Evil experience, try Resident Evil 4. Ammo is still limited (and inventory), but to the best of my memory there is no "ribbon" requirement for saving. Movement and such is a little better too.

Gaming site Kotaku reported an early Toys R Us ad - supposedly the Wii will be getting a $50 price cut to $199 at the end of September.

Debating getting one. A few PC cards and a DS/360 game or two, or a Wii and one game?

I would but consider it but I couldn't buy your entire package.

There are only a few select games I want to play on the Wii - so I would likely buy the system (new for $199) and maybe one game for now.

But, I'm considering buying a new DS game or two (which I can bring with me to campus) this week.

Cody,

The Wii is mainly best for group games. If you have people over a lot then the Wii is great. Personally, I would rather have a PS3 or XBox360 because of the better graphics and game selection. But my wife really loves the interactiveness of the Wii. It's really the only reason she enjoys video games at all. She won't play the other systems. Plus when we have people over for parties, it's a blast putting everyone into bowling teams and things like that.

So, unless you are doing those things, I would stick with the other systems and just buy new games.

Posted by: dd316 Sep 16 2009, 12:54 PM

I've been playing a lot of Left 4 Dead lately. I know the new one comes out soon.

I'm excited about the next Splinter Cell game, that comes out late October. Those games are so much fun!

Posted by: ffman Sep 16 2009, 01:08 PM

I mainly game alone unless I'm playing my 360 online.

The main games I would like to try on the Wii are:

- Super Mario Galaxy
- Super Paper Mario
- Medal of Honor Heroes 2
- etc

Just a few games here and there....I guess nothing worth $200 right now over.

Ted - is L4D "playable" online without a headset (ie....not having a headset wouldn't ruin the experience)? It's something I would like to play but I've heard communication is fairly important with that game.

Super Mario Galaxy is a BLAST! It's a bit different from Mario 64, but in that good Mario way that makes it fun. You really can't go wrong with it. I also really want to get Super Paper Mario (which also looks AMAZING), but haven't had the extra cash as of yet.

cody how is halo. odst looks really fun. and it has all the maps from halo 3 on it

Posted by: ffman Sep 16 2009, 07:06 PM

When I first got it (I bought it for MP; I had already beaten the campaign on co-op with a friend), I was really disappointed. I didn't know going in that play was restricted based on the DLC. (I have no hard drive which = no DLC)

After trying it again though it is ok. Not as good for me as Call of Duty 4 (which blows everything else out of the water) but good.

If you want to play Halo for multiplayer, get ODST for the reason you mentioned. All DLC (plus three new maps) on the multiplayer disc.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ODST street date release 9/22/09!!!!! Already reserved it and can't wait to get it home and stay up til 8am the next day!!! Call me a nerd, geek or just a hardcore halo/bungie fanatic, I dont care!!!. Included with the ODST (if you reserved it) is the Halo: Reach beta which will later be opened up to the people that reserved ODST. Plus you get to play as Sgt. Johnson from the Halo trilogy. ODST will feature FireFight, which is like Horde on GOW2. You can unlock characters and FireFight levels when you beat certain ODST levels. I encourage anyone who is a fan of the Halo Trilogy to pick up, rent or simply borrow this game from someone who has it!!!!!!! O btw, Halo:Reach releases in 2010!

finally got the 20 kills in a game achievement.

Posted by: ffman Sep 20 2009, 11:29 AM

Played a little Call of Duty 4 last night for a change.

Had one of my best matches EVER on Bog. Not in regards to kill total, but K/D ratio.

I started on the "far" side of the map, behind the bus. I had the M40 sniper with Stopping Power and went 19-1. I basically "camped" in one location the entire match although I did occasionally change my sniping spot; I'm surprised I was only killed one time.

At the start of the match I killed two guys with one bullet.

Halo 3: ODST, I rate it a solid A. I don't/won't go into too much detail.

If I got it it would only be for the Halo 3 MP disc with all maps. But, I should probably get a hard drive and a $20 points card instead.

There are a few. You would probably spend $30-40 in Microsoft Points to purchase all of them. That's the reason I don't have WaW - no hard drive to store the packs. If you don't have the proper maps you are kicked out of the game. Kinda like how Halo 3 only lets you play certain modes if you don't have all the DLC.

There are a few.  You would probably spend $30-40 in Microsoft Points to purchase all of them.  That's the reason I don't have WaW - no hard drive to store the packs.  If you don't have the proper maps you are kicked out of the game.  Kinda like how Halo 3 only lets you play certain modes if you don't have all the DLC.

after talking to one of my guys in the clan i am in. i think i am going to wait till nov 10th and just get. MW 2
thanks for the imput cody

I FINALLY beat Dragon Quest 8 yesturday. One of the best games I've ever played. I highly reccomend it to anyone. Cody you should seriously try to finish it. You said you had a very high amount of hours in it, I forget the exact number, but you probably weren't too far off. If you decide to play it again and need guidance, let me know.

Modern Warfare is much like it except with modern weaponry.

And, you don't get kicked out of matches if you don't have certain DLC maps like you do with WaW.

Yeah COD4 and COD5 run the exact same engine just with different maps and different weapons. They are virtually the same game.

Posted by: ffman Sep 23 2009, 10:19 AM

Thanks. I simply need to get a few more levels in to finish off the final area but I don't have the patience to do it.

I agree, Arkham Asylum is an awesome game and being that I am a huge Batman fan this game is one of the best I played, especially the Scarecrow encounter. This game would make a great movie as long as they kept it evil and dark like the game.

Yes, but at the same time, there are game types devoted to players/gamers that do not have the "newer" maps. Social slayer, Rumble pit, Lone Wolves and Team Slayer. All in all, if you do not own the new maps, its all good because you can still play all the other 10+ maps from the original release.

I can't play Team Slayer or Rumble Pit with my Halo 3 (no DLC).

But this weekend I think I am going to pick up a hard drive and ODST.

Its about time. Gamestop has 20 gb for 50.00 and 40 gb for 70 and 60 gb for 100. I think the fact that Microsoft dropped the Elite to 300 is awesome, 120 gb of memory is more than enough for anything pertaining to the xbox live experience. The Limited Edition Modern Warfare xbox is a replacement to boost sales since the Elite has dropped in price.

Posted by: ffman Sep 28 2009, 12:39 PM

I'll be getting the 60 GB from Wal-Mart - $100 minus 10% discount.

I thought about getting a 1600 Live points card and simply downloading the Halo 3 DLC, but on my internet connection speed it would take several hours. I'll likely get Halo 3: ODST so I can skip all that downloading.

Been played Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 the last couple weeks, pretty fun biggrin.gif

Posted by: ffman Oct 11 2009, 01:30 PM

I borrowed Call of Duty: World at War from Landon Saturday. I had a chance to play a few matches last night, and the gameplay is quite different (in my opinion) from Modern Warfare. Maps are much more open (something I don't like) and the weapons themselves are different.

On one match I racked up 30 kills using the Type 99....the high total was thanks to a well-timed pack of hungry dogs. laugh.gif Yet....my team found a way to lose the match.

Posted by: Stlouisrams1600 Oct 11 2009, 03:34 PM

I hate the Type 99! I like anything with a scope. laugh.gif I've been playing the Campaign on the Wii, I was doing good. I'm stuck now, because it's something with tanks and it's so hard. biggrin.gif

Posted by: ffman Oct 11 2009, 03:37 PM

Landon and I beat the campaign (Xbox 360) on co-op this weekend. It was frustrating but only took about 5-8 hours.

I can't wait to unlock the aperture sights for several of the guns, but it takes long to get the sights on multiplayer than it did with CoD: MW.

Anybody else as excited as I am for Dragon Age: Origins?

It's from Bioware, the same people who did Mass Effect and both Knights of the Old Republic titles (plus Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights if you go back far enough)

I love fantasy RPG titles, played Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights a ton, and I absolutely loved the Knights of the Old Republic games.

Only thing that makes me nervous is the mature rating. I'm quite certain that no video game requires the "partial nudity" that is in the rating warnings, and I'd really rather not have to deal with that popping up on my TV screen during the middle of an otherwise normal game. I'm hopeful that it's optional content and not part of the main story arc though.

Posted by: ffman Oct 20 2009, 11:29 AM

It shouldn't be that bad.

Mass Effect had the same warning and the actual "partial nudity" was minimal (and was part of an extra side "romance" storyline).

I would be excited for Dragon Age but it is hard for me to get into lengthy single player games like I did before. Plus, my $60 will be going towards Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and possibly Borderlands.

Who knows though....depending on reviews and such I might check it out. Mass Effect and KOTOR were great games; Mass Effect remains one of my favorite role-playing games off all-time - such a great story and atmosphere.

I've been addicted to "Fallout 3." I'm about 26 hours in and have only done one mission for the main quest. Haha.

I bought "Batman: Arkham Asylum" when it came out and sold it four days later. Sorry, but spending $60 on a 10-hour game isn't worth it. I thought it'd be longer. Oh well, got $50 back. Good game, but I hate how the enemies don't respawn.

Pre-ordered it off steam for 45 bucks the other day. (Steam is a client for the PC that has a friends list and a store, and you also need it to play Valve games such as Team Fortress 2 and Counter-Strike: Source)

I'm really pumped for it.

Saw that on Steam the other day, looked pretty fun but I just don't think I want to pay full price for a game that I don't know much about and haven't seen much of.

Posted by: ffman Oct 20 2009, 04:55 PM

Fallout 3 is a game I've wanted but never plopped down the money for. I have Oblivion and have yet to complete it - sometimes the character customization possibilities are too much for me. I know Fallout 3 is very similar in that regard.
But, at $40 I might consider it in the future....just depends on what else I do or don't decide to buy.

In regards to game length - I used to feel that way. That is likely one way I preferred RPGs so much. Now that I find myself with less time for gaming, I don't mind the shorter game experience. That said, I am pretty good about waiting until the price drops.

then of course i can't wait till BC2 comes out either.

Posted by: ffman Oct 20 2009, 07:00 PM

I have a dilemma (video game style, of course).

My Xbox Live Gold membership expires in November - I plan on laying $20 down for another 3-month membership to hold me until Christmas when I will probably get a year.

Next month, MW 2 releases - a no-brainer for me. That's $80 right there.

But, I also want to get either Borderlands or Fallout 3 ($60 or $40).

What do I do? Quit buying cards for a while and get Live/2 games....or buy a couple of cards and just get Live/MW2?

It looks great; if I had a PS3 I would likely get it.

I think the GOTY battle will be between Modern Warfare 2 and Uncharted 2. I think, undoubtedly, MW 2 will feature the longer-lasting multiplayer experience but Uncharted 2 appears to have a fantastic single-player mode.

Next month will be great between Assassin's Creed II and Modern Warfare 2.

Well there is becoming a huge shot that the ps3 may be the last system from sony.
With sony taking 4.7 billion in looses so far with the ps3.
Including a 600 million dollar loose in the second quarter this year.
Could this be the end of the play station

Here is what i see happening. Sony goes back to using cheaper hardware like they used in the ps2. loose a lot support from the people who
or we will not see a ps4. unless they find a way cheaper way to make it

don't think sony will go under. but wouldn't be shocked if they dropped their gaming section

Again, I wasn't talking about sales. But all year long the PS3 has released exceptional exclusives one after another, and the best thing the 360 could come up with to counter all this was ODST, basically an expansion to a previous game that has already come out for that console and that got incredibly mediocre reviews.

Xbox 360's top "ranked" game this year was Street Fighter 4, which PS3 was about the same.

PS3 has Uncharted 2 and LBP above that as the top 2 rated games on any platform this year, both exclusives to the PS3

Yeah I put about 4 hours into it yesterday as a Human fury Warrior, gf made an elf primal mage I think, graphics are pretty sweet, story is cool so far, plenty of side quests, imo its way way better then Oblivion.

So many class options it isn't even funny for each class

i think you forget about Forza 3
but then it what you like. personally i have liked the 360 games better this year over the ps3
*

If you think the 360 has outperformed the PS3 in games this year, you obviously haven't played Uncharted 2. It has almost already won game of the year, and is quite possibly the greatest game to be released in this generation.

And about Forza 3...PS3 has Gran Turismo 5 coming out soon which will tear that game to shreds.

Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT and 4 GB of RAM. Can run CoD4 in 1280x1024 with the highest settings...looks beautiful.

Picked up Forza 3 and Fifa 10 for my birthday.
Fifa 10 is awsome. Haven't got to play forza 3 yet.

Posted by: Cades Nov 5 2009, 05:07 PM

Dragon Age is pretty sweet, its nice playing on a 46" TV but the PC version is probably better with more hot keys for skills, 6 on the PS3 isn't very good.

Too bad I am not building my PC till january ;(

About 11 hours in so far. So much stuff/skills/etc.

I am a Human Warrior - Fury - Noble I think, almost down the Berserker Path after this Dwarf finally teaches me the ways

I played Uncharted 2 for PS3. I will have to admit that the graphics are unreal. The thing that turned me off of the game after about 30 minutes was the amount of cut scenes. Too many IMO. Let the player/gamer play the game without having the AI take over 60% of it.

The game has a great storyline. Any game that with a good storyline is going to have a fair amount of cutscenes.

Fifa 10 is freaking awesome. One of my favorite games on the 360.

Forza 3 is good.
The music isn't really need as you can never hear it over the car engine. But everything looks amazing.

But they did an awesome job esp. since they only really made the game in 3 months.
I don't think GT5 will blow it out of the water. I think they will be two good sims.

I downloaded the demo to that a few days ago. It's a lot of fun! Mindless zombie shooting with upgraded graphics. What more can you want?

I'm looking forward to Modern Warfare 2, just because I'm sick of playing CoD 4, and I'm awful at WaW. I've had my copy on reserve since May, so I've been waiting quite a while.

If anyone ever wants to play something on LIVE, my gamertag is Wh1te Veener. I mainly only play CoD (will play L4D2 when it's released).

Matt, nice to see you again!

I'll try to add you to XBL tomorrow night. I play quite a bit of CoD 4. I've tried WaW but I get kicked out of a lot of matches since I don't have the DLC. I'm not as good at it either right now.

demo was really fun. esp. the 4 player co-op.

but it really isn't enough for me. to justify 60 bucks for it

I rarely play anymore, but I think i'll be playing more when I get CoD MW2 since i'm pretty excited for it. I'm probably going to get L4D 2 as well since zombie slaying is sweet. I mainly play Halo 3 since i'm beastmode at it but I haven't played in a while. I also liked playing CoD 4 but since I changed my gamertag all of my weapons and what not reset so I was pretty depressed lol.

Oh it certainly wouldn't be a purchase... that'd be a rent!

Posted by: metsfan2427 Nov 8 2009, 10:09 AM

So last week i got my 360 back from best buy.

But its still doing the same crap my 1st xbox was doing.

Scratching up my discs. I got Fifa 10 last week and now its all scratched up.

So got to go bestbuy later today and get it sent out for the second time in two

weeks.

So i am extremely ###### off. That bestbuy couldn't give me a console that worked. Heck atleast i am half way there to a new elite.
Only 2 more trips after today until they replace it with a brand new on.

Posted by: Kmart6nets Nov 8 2009, 10:26 AM

I've heard people with a TON of problems with the 360s... They seem to be incredibly unreliable.

They are. The 360 is such a poorly put together console that it's STILL having these fatal errors nearly 4 years after it's release.

but that same is happening with the ps3.

it seems more and more ps3's are breaking down.

guess what your screwed. If you didn't get a warranty from the store you

bought it from.

But i am really happy right now. When i took my 360 back to bestbuy. They decide to let me exchange it for a new elite.

Plus when i go pick up MW2 on tusday.
They said i could bring back Fifa 10 and Forza 3 and exchange them for new copys. Since the system scratched my the discs.

but now i am not sure what to do. keep the 60 gb hard drive. sell the 120.
buy the thing to transfer my stuff over to the 120 and sell the 60

Actually, no it's not. What you should've said is "It seems more and more 360's are breaking down", but everybody already knows that.

I own a 360 and am very disappointed in it and it's poor selection of games. I'm not gonna lie, PS3 is looking really good right now.

obviously you should off bought a ps3 in the first place.

i think the 360 has a great selection of games.

The PS2 also had poor-quality hardware and did fine in the end altogether.

This generation between Xbox 360 and PS3 I don't see as huge a gap in exclusives as last generation. Sure, each has their own gems but - in my opinion nothing ground-breaking that makes either console a winner.

The 360/ps3 are pretty much the same.

Everyone preaches that the ps3 has so much better hardware than the 360. But besides blue-ray there isn't that big of a difference.

The ps3 has failed to show me why blueray is better for gaming. Besides UC2. '

But then look at Forza 3 that is one of the nicest looking games this gen. And thats on dvd 9.

What about LittleBigPlanet....and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue....and God of War III...and Metal Gear Solid 4...and the first Uncharted...and many many other PS3 games that have been released.

By the way, when God of War III is released, it'll blow away the 360 more than Uncharted 2 and MGS4 did. Mark my words, once again 360 will have nothing to counter a possible game of the year in God of War III but a lame attempt at yet another expansion of the Halo franchise with Halo: Reach.

Hi,
I don't listen to opinions of people who are obviously Sony Fanboys.
Have a nice day.
all you say is.
ps3 is greatest system of all time. All 360 games suck.
360 is a horrible system.
Every ps3 game blows the 360 game out of the water.
Enough Said go be a cow on some other site.

Your argument that I "am obviously a Sony Fanboy" is very flawed. First, never once did I state that:

"ps3 is greatest system of all time"
"All 360 games suck"
"360 is a horrible system"
"Every ps3 game blows the 360 game out of the water"

When your not busy, please find the 4 times I said that, I'll be patiently waiting. I don't even own a PS3, making it nearly impossible for me to be a fanboy. If anything, your the 360 fanboy, considering how little credit you give the PS3 and it's selection of games. Given your response, I guess you don't have much to say about my counter-argument and the predictions I made.

P.S. - It is very very hard to write a response to anything you with your downright awful grammar. Only about 1/5 of the sentences you type are grammatically correct.

P.S.S. - I believe it's a "troll" not a "cow," although I'm confused as to how I am being a troll.

on a lighter note, MW2 releases for both PS3 and 360 on the 10th. Oh, I like the fact that Metal Gear Solid will release on 360. Always loved playing the games on PS2. I'm not gonna sit here and argue on which system has the better graphics, game selection or which one works the worst and has the most flaws within the systems. Everyone has their preference as to which they like and dislike. Personally I could care less about people who enjoy Sony and who enjoy 360. Gaming systems are built around the gamer's experience and how much fun they have playing them.

Posted by: Kmart6nets Nov 9 2009, 06:14 AM

So... I think I'm hooked... I got Twilight Princess back when it first came out and only put about 17-18 hours into it. At that time I moved and had other priorities and things got moved around and I really didn't play many one-player games for a while... I had nothing at all to do yesterday so I fired it up and started the game over again... I played for 5 hours straight and it's going to be a LONG day at work thinking about coming home and playing it again laugh.gif

Posted by: metsfan2427 Nov 9 2009, 09:07 AM

Can't wait for MW2.
And cardinal. i think the ps3 has a decent selection of games. I never said once that the ps3 didn;t have good games.
