Collector Zone _ News and Announcements _ Size of signatures
Posted by: bob_TCC Oct 10 2006, 04:48 PM
We're going to prepare formal guidelines related to signatures in the near future. However, I did want to go ahead and make a request now for every member to review their signature and make an attempt to keep it to a reasonable size - as a courtesy to each other.
Here are very high-level rules of thumb:
Height: Keep the height to something equivalent to my signature (1-1.5x or less). As you can see, you can easily fit a few images and text into a signature and still keep the height reasonable.
Width: Images should be kept to a reasonable width. A quick test is to simply look at the top of the site while viewing your own profile. If the gap between the logo (left corner) and the banner (middle) is very much, one or more images in your signature are too large. Typically, images of about 400 pixels wide or less work best.
Thanks for helping to keep our "home" clean!

Yes, your signature is a good example of one needing some updates.
The Calico banner is the ideal width, so the Quinn one would be better if it was resized to that size.
Also, the height could be reduced by about 40-50%. For example, let some of your text be on the same line instead of adding line breaks for everything (e.g., players you collect).

If you could create smaller fonts I could use, I think I can fit the Declaration of Independence in my sig.

When posts are getting lost in between the signatures, the signatures have gotten too large. As I said in my initial post, it's really a matter of common courtesy as much as anything.
Beyond that, there are plenty of other things that set TCC apart from other sites.

The height looks just fine.
If you look at the top of the site, you're likely seeing a gap between the logo and banner at the moment. To remove that gap, it would be better if your banner was closer to 400 pixels wide.
Again, I have no intention of getting out a ruler and measuring everyone's signature and spending a bunch of time enforcing strict rules about signature size. I'm simply asking everyone to understand that your signature does affect how others view topics. Please just keep that in mind and make adjustments if you can.
-Bob

I don't mind the adjustments at all. I have been meaning to anyway.
Posted by: bob_TCC Oct 10 2006, 05:29 PM
For the record, I've also received a number of PMs over time that indicated that members thought the site was "too busy" with images, etc. in the signatures. Point is that we just have to find a reasonable point in the middle.

Just look at the top of the site and you'll know the answer.
By the way, most computers will have some type of software on them that allows you to resize images.

The 3rd one is a little too wide and could be resized in just about any graphics program. Then, in general, my recommendation is that an animated banner could be used to rotate between different images while still staying at a reasonable size.

It would be good to reduce the 4 to 2. Again, an animated banner could be created that loops through all 4 but just takes up the space of a single one.

We'll give everyone until 1/1/2007 to simply honor this request. Starting then, we'll begin to edit the signatures of those members that don't.
It's amazing what short memories some members have though. They reduce the size of their signature to be considerate of others (as requested here) and then immediately begin the process of adding things back.

I think some people take for granted that they have DSL or the like... my brother still has dial up and one of his complaints is how long it takes to load some pages... those of you with excessive sized signatures contribute to that, please be considerate...

OK, people...
I'm still seeing rather large signatures. Those of you who have three or more large banners in your signature, along with a long list of people you collect and the percentage of cards of theirs you own, should think of revising your signature for the sake of others Lists, banners, other images... They're all fine, but keeping the overall size of your signature in mind is a good idea.
Thanks all!
Posted by: acampione Jan 13 2007, 04:11 PM
I agree.
My computer has frozen twice today, both times were on here. A couple of people have three banners and a list.
I don't see a point to all of the banners or the lists.
I believe there is a notepad function in my controls. If you want to put your list there, do so. Just don't put a huuuuge list and many, many banners..

Maybe before typing you can take a look at your own signature!
This is the real problem if your signature is as large the computer screen shorten it. If you have 2-3 banners use one! and rotate them. I make banners and can have 20 in my sig but never use more than one because it common curtiosity.

I've noticed one thing that makes signatures appear longer is whatever information you have under your screen name (eBay link, OpenChecklist, etc).
My signature is small, but I noticed it was being stretched by the info under my name. So, I removed the link to my eBay profile since I'm never selling anything.

Some people's signatures are massive.
Snip em, people! There's no need to make each line of text font size 72. There's no need for 15 banners. There's no reason why you can't have your wants on one line rather than a billion separate lines.

Can't you take out a few lines of text (like the political text and link), delete a couple of the extra blank lines dividing text/links, or see if a member will re-size your '2000 rushing yards' banner?

If you had Matt create a single, rotating banner with your 2 images and then better positioned your text, you could actually reduce the size by 40-50% and probably lose very little of the content.

The banner with the logos is not necessary since your favorite team icons already show those teams.

Joe, I can't make banners, I can only animate and add effects to them, sorry. But I'll get started on the animation of them right away.
Edit: PM sent, Joe.

Why do you say that? Some of the signatures are simply too big.
Posted by: Kmart6nets Aug 25 2007, 05:01 PM
I see no problem with regulating this.... There's no reason to have insanely long signatures, especially in threads where half the responses are "nice card" or "nice pull."
Not that I'm ripping on that, but it gets very cluttered for not a lot of content.

This is a good example that there will always be members who see things completely differently when dealing with a community of this size. I have heard feedback that we don't "regulate" enough here and now we have feedback that we're regulating too much.

I'm more concerned and ticked at posts that are toooooooooooooo wide and stretch the limits of the horizontal part of the screen forcing you to scroll right to see the super huge card scan, or whatever is causing the page to scroll off. This has always annoyed me on any forum I've used.
I have adjusted my sig length as per a request, even though technically it was less than half the max number of characters acutally allowed. It may have come close but I don't think it had ever been longer than a full screen height. I know it could be smaller I'll see what I can do to keep it short and still look nice.

Yep wantlists links to "My Trading and Marketplace Topics" pages not only trims the old sig it helps get attention from other TCC members.
I had been meaning to post some sort of specific wantlists before but didn't make the time to do it and couldn't remember what I needed for some of my sets. I'm slowly getting things organized and trade-ready.
I do miss having a pic in my sig. I'm thinking of putting something like a shorter version of this:
I think it's a little too high. I'd probably have to cut it down to just one row of cards with my TCC Name line, and perhaps learn how to flip between two images.

It's hard to work with this type of stuff, since many people now work with widescreen type monitors and it doesn't look unusual to us...and scans that are too small don't let you see details on the card. I agree tho, single card scans/pics that stretch the width are troublesome.

400 across is usually acceptable because it does not stretch the site's edges/boundaries.

what about length?
I just don't want to have to rebuild it again
Posted by: 19th Century Indiana Jones Jan 1 2008, 12:02 PM
Personally, I like 400 x 100. It's small, compact, and doesn't take away from the post. It adds just enough personal accent.

how do you get one of those cool banners for your sig? Ive been trying to get one forever!
Posted by: Tarasadie17 Jan 24 2008, 01:14 AM
I find it disappointing that on a site that offers so much with no fees or charges that the simple request to keep signatures within the posted guidelines is so hard to do for many of the members...
Posted by: Tarasadie17 Jan 24 2008, 01:16 AM
Here again are the guidelines set by Bob...
"Here are very high-level rules of thumb:
Height: Keep the height to something equivalent to my (Bob's) signature (1-1.5x or less).
Typically, images of about 400 pixels wide or less work best."
Posted by: nerk01 Jan 24 2008, 10:16 AM
Images in the signature line are over-rated.
They are so bad here at TCC that instead of hoping that people can police themselves I just turn the signatures off.
As it turns out the pages load much faster now and it's easier to read the post content.

That is why we ask folks to try and keep it to a minimum... many of our members don't have broadband superspeed connections and it takes forever to load the pages when you have tons oversized signatures with many of the graphics...
Don't get me wrong, a nice banner is always a commidity.... but we have people who put looooooooong lists or stack multiple banners, which doesn't show a lot of consideration to the other members....

Is it possible to make a character limit for the sig instead of saying "It should be like this _____" ?? Picture limit could be like, 470 W x 100 H or something close and then have a limit on the characters as well.

It'd be cool if you could put in a sig of any size like a walpaper, and when you hit "save my signature" it will shrink it within the H&W Requirements.
