Some of those are surprising. Flattening out is fine. Vintage guys aren't out to make a killing right off the bat....just makes them more accessable to the vintage guys

I think it is an indicator of what our cards will do over the next ten years as well. You cannot expect much appreciation in value in cards anymore until they hit 25 years old, with that said, I would say several will see some increase in the next two years, but moderate at best. With todays product...too many autos and GUd will drive values down in the next ten years for todays products. Also, with an oversaturation of product, that will also help drive down prices as many people don't collect subsets, or even insert sets, just particular players. This means you open the value of your collection to the "ethics" of players. Vick is a prime example of the that, and I fear even Sean Taylor's cards will hit a quick decline even though he won't be signing any more cards. Once a player is revealed to be "immoral" our collections will take a hit. Only the extremely popular and revealed players cards will hold value. All others, people will lose interest and slowly go by the wayside.

For the true "collector" who collects only for the sole pleasure of it (how many are there of those left?) this means nothing. For those who look forward to leaving it to our children or grandchildren as an investment...buy gold.

It's just a truth we have to accept. Our collection will only increase in value when we add new inventory, a big rookie shocks everyone, a card hits 25 years old, or the player dies.

plink plink....my two cents worth...in 10 years it will still be worth 2 cents

I wish that was really true but it really isn't. Value is determined by demand and one thing I have learned in my time on these forums is the younger collectors would rather have a shiny numbered Mickey Mantle card than the "real thing". If that trend holds true then pricing will decline.
The vintage market is tricky. You have some collectors brainwashed into thinking all the good cards need to be graded (mostly because they are afraid to learn how to grade themselves). A Nrmt-Mt card is Nrmt-mt because it meets the hobby standards to be called NRMT-MT but as long as a segment of the hobby relies on the misguided theory that only PSA can call a vintage card NRMT-MT and pay premiums for those cards, there will never be a true standard for vintage pricing.
My hope is that the 16-25 crowd who is buying all of those shiny Mantle cards as they get older will decide it is worthwhile to look at the older cardboard as well. All of these retro sets have done a great job of introducing new and younger collectors to the players of the past. Now we just need to get those collectors to see the value of cards of the past.

I agree! I'm just afraid that it won't happen though, at least not to the extent that we would like for it to. As long as collectors today can turn on ESPN and see Reggie Bush running back kickoffs for TDs they will have more of an emotional attachment to him and today's current stars instead of the greats of the past that they have never seen play.

I would love to go into a card shop and pay me a older card like you are talking about but, times are hard with mess we are in. I was told by a collector awhile back that I should lay off purchasing wax pack from stores like Wal-Mart or Target and go spend save up your money and go buy a sngle card or two. He said that I should be able to get the cards sort of cheap because, of our economy. I may take trip thing weekend to my local card shop and see what they have.

I kinda disagree that the 16-25 has little or no interest in vintage. basicly on the fact they will get older and views probably will change. I was the same way. Then I evolved a bit wondering...what was before John Elway, Orange Crush, etc. Now I just concentrate on stuff before my time. It's old, but fresh to me... if that makes any sense. blink.gif
