Agreed that Murtha should not be the Majority Leader.
IMHO, the Democrats need to publically promote civil service, either holding office or by being an employee of the federal/state/local government, as an honorable, professional, vocation. Vocation is the key word here.
New, vibrant, untainted, progressive blood is needed in the early 21st. century to help solve our societal and global problems. We need quality, knowledgeable people to help direct our inherent governmental functions in the most efficient, effective and responsive manner possible.
The only way to do this is to create a pride in civil service at all levels of government to make it attractive for our best and brightest to serve we in society. Some in the past have said that Democrats (of which I do not consider myself one) didn't have a positive agenda. To me, this issue should be central.
This was central to the Progressive Party stance in the early 20th century. Remember: this populist party was a split from a broken Republican majority at the time. This is an area where all of us, regardless of ideology, should be able to agree upon.
Mr. Murtha is part of the old establishment. That's coming from someone who is 42
Mr. Murtha, by leaving the door open in the years ago (but I remember!) FBI ABSCAM bribery scandal, is sullied and does not promote that pride.
