I enjoy the fact that if you're collecting for enjoyment that you can actually enjoy it again! That sounds odd right? Let me explain: When I was a kid I so wanted three cards: the Score Bo Jackson FB/BB, a Dale Murphy rookie and the infamous Billy Ripken obscenity card. Tha amount of money to get them seemed astronomical then! I now own all versions of the Ripken, two Murphs and about 20 Jackson FB/BB cards. I might have $100 in all of them For me it's a really fun and affordable way to remember the simpler times.

QUOTE(jaderock @ Oct 7 2008, 04:25 PM) The "like" thread is getting killed 2 to 1! So I thought I put something positive here! That's one thing I DON'T like! We need more posts in this topic....but I guess at times it is easier to focus on the negative in things.

QUOTE(coltsfan23 @ Oct 24 2008, 10:17 PM) Prospecting ftw! You know.. that's prob my favorite part as well. I never got into prospecting but I guess I can see the allure of it. I enjoy watching my star rookies fluctuate to what extent they do. I just don't have the time, funds, or patience for pure prospecting. I am having fun with my Matt Garza autograph refractor RC right now though!

QUOTE(urbanmonk @ Oct 26 2008, 01:29 AM) Better to give than to recieve .....so guess I like the opposite end of the spectrum and there is so many great folks here and in the hobby. So what are you going to give me? Sorry, thats all I ever think of whenever I see that line. "its better to give than receive" The freebies are nice for those just getting started but once your collection has grown I think it is fun to give a little bit back to others who are just starting out. I remember back when I started collecting breweriana. I was about 12 and I was after anything and everything I could find that had a beer name on it. There was this older guy at a swap that must have given me about $100.00 worth of junk. I doubt anything was worth over a $1.00 but I was the happiest kid at the show. I organized a bunch of that stuff into a large (about 3'x3') picture frame type display that had probably 60 or 70 pieces on it and it hung on my bedroom wall for about 5 years. Then I started to concentrate on a few local breweries and the frame was relegated to a closet for another 4 or 5 years. I was doing some house cleaning and decided I need more room so it had to go. A friend of mine had a kid (who was about 12 years old) who was just getting started collecting and I gave him the frame. Just like me, he was happy as a clam. About 5 years later I went to a guys house to pick up a few items I had bought and I see the frame hanging on the wall. Turns out his kid was just getting into the beer stuff as well and this guy Jake had given it to him. Thats about 15 years and 3 young kids who received a ton of happiness over a bunch of worthless trinkets all because one old man took it upon himself to be generous to a wide eyed kid at his first swap. I saw the dad of the last known owner of the frame about 3 years ago and asked if his kid still had the frame. He said that he didn't and that he didn't know what happened to it. I imagine a few of the pieces had gained a little value and someone tore it apart to get at them. Either that or it all continued to be worthless junk and someone decided to throw it away. However, I like to think that somewhere some young kid is just getting started in the hobby and its hanging on his wall because some old guy just gave it to him. Of course any 12 year old getting started in the breweriana hobby today would probably spark an investigation of the parents by social services but thats the way things have changed. That's my little hallmark moment. I know it doesn't have anything to do with this hobby but the principle is the same. Get kids hooked early and hopefully they are hooked for life.
