Collector Zone _ Hockey _ Pros/Cons of selling on ebay vs. here

I'm at a point in my collecting that i'm not really adding to my collections and I need to thin out what I have. And truth be told, I need cash. I haven't sold anything with the one exception of a card that i had a cash offer on after i posted a box break here. I have bought on ebay but never sold on there, and before diving in to listing my goods, i'd like to hear some of the pros and cons of selling on there or listing things in the marketplace here.

The bulk of what i would like to put up for sale isn't the common jersy or auto card but rather some mid to higher "valued" items from the late 90's to mid 00's. As an example, a 99/00 Gretzky Greats of the Game auto/jersey /40. That is one of my higher valued pieces that i would be will ing to part with.

So, is there enough of a market on this board to test the sales waters or should i sell on ebay? Yes ebay gets more traffic, but who gets a better, more fair price?

While i have this in the hockey board, my collection is mostly hockey and baseball, with some football and very little basketball. Hockey and baseaball would be the prominent items up for sale.

I appreciate any comments and advise.

What I see a lot of folks do is try selling here first, since there are no fees... and after a week if there are no bites, list it on Ebay....

I agree with Michael on this, I would list the cards here with your asking prices. If nothing sells you can always go back to ebay, unless you are selling on ebay due to no insertion fees.

Thanks folks. Think I will need to start scanning some things and putting them in my bucket then. And...pick up some new Beckett's to get realistic prices.

If either of you are inclined to buy, keep an eye in the marketplaces in the future as i have things of your teams that i can move from my collection. Mostly hockey though

If you have good enough feedback E-Bay is offering specials all the time these days for sellers, what's weird about these are that E-Bay store owners aren't allowed the specials.

I used to have a E-Bay store which was great, I could list cards with BIN & BO (buy it now & best offer accepted) the cards were dirt cheap to list & the listings lasted 30 days with auto renewal if you wanted. Then E-Bay (as usual) changed the rules (price structure) for stores & made it too expensive imo.

I dropped the store as did a bunch of folks & thought oh well rode the train as long as I could. Since then E-Bay has started offering specials on listings. The have a continuing special which is great for cheap cards, you can list up to 100 items a month for free as long as they start under .99 cents. Then they have ramdom specials, like free to list regular auctions at any price for a week or two period, I just start my items at a fair price or at the least I'd sell them for & I'm getting buyers. Theres a special on yesterday & today to list 100 items auction style at any start price for .10 cents each. I listed 62 last night & hope to list the other 38 tonight. I had one item with a bid in seconds & had another bid this morning (2 items & are @ 225$ opening bids). It cost me 6.20$ to list the 62 items so I'm ahead already.

I'm thinning my collections also, this is working for me because if they don't sell this time there's always another & I've been able to list the max allowed with each of the specials they've had so far. If you go this route I recommend getting E-Bays Turbo Lister, it's handy for items that don't sell. The next time there's a sale you just go to the history section & relist items. I don't want to start my high $ stuff at .99 cents because I don't want to be the subject of the next STEAL thread.
