I appreciate the well articulated points given by historian1974, very nicely put. Although I personally know that there are humanists and others who do believe something much more along the lines of what Bob's impressions are. It seems that historian and I have a similar mindset, which may differ from what some may see as an atheist "takeover" for lack of a more precise word. Personally, I respect people and their right to believe whatever they want. For the most part, I see Christians as the ones who don't generally show appreciation for those who don't share their religion or beliefs. For centuries, Christians have tried to convert anyone and everyone on this planet to their way of thinking, often using unethical means to do so. Native cultures of all kinds have the right to live the way they choose and Christians should have no right to impose their own religious beliefs on those kinds of people. If you want to interact and SHARE ideas in an open context of give and take and respect, no problem, but that isn't how it has been done thus far.
For myself, I see humans as equal members amongst the inhabitants on Earth. Now, I guess this isn't totally true, but philosophically I do because I recognize that we are all survivors. We've all managed to evolve into what we are because of what has come before. When it comes down to it, humans are just creatures, like any others. We have abilities that others do not and I believe some responsibilites as well. I see humans as "equals" with the other living things and Christianity says humans are above creatures, but below God. Bob talked about Humanists putting themselves on top, and from a religious perspective, I understand that, but it is incorrect. The Christian idea is God, Man, beast. So if God is removed, Man is the ruler. But people like me see it differently, as I mentioned before. We recognize we are superior in many ways, but at the same time recognize, because we evolved in the same way the other creatures did, we are no different. Because of this, we realize that just like the dinosaurs who once "ruled" this planet, we can easily be swept aside as well. And in all likelyhood, one day we will join the ranks of the extinct species who once roamed this land. I think both the Christian and atheist ideas create a similar sense of humility in us, but it is not necessary for everyone to adopt the Christian thought process in order to come to a humble attitude toward our place in existence. |

I have a Griffey auto redemption from 08 Ballpark that I redeemed Oct 08. It still hasn't arrived yet, but now I'm starting to see an auto jersey card from that product showing up on Ebay. Other than a totally different card numbering system, its the same card I should be getting. Also, Griffey is a UD Spokesman who's had a signing deal with them for YEARS, why can't they have him sign the cards?!! I've heard many horror stories about UD redemptions and so have never really done them before, but because it was Griffey, I was all but certain he would sign, as he has a lifelong contract to sign for them. This is ridiculous! |

When I was in school I was taught that we have been coming out of an Ice Age for 20,000 years or so and no one was sure whether we would continue to warm (aka, come out of the Ice Age more) or whether we would fall back into another round of Ice Ages. (Also, technically we are still in an Ice Age as there is still continual ice in some places on the planet) Then in college I learned that the Earth has actually been much warmer in the past than it is now. With that I have some comments. If we know the Earth has been warmer in the past, how can we claim that it has to be the fault of humans that the Earth is warming? (If it indeed factually is, as I'm not sure if it is true or not given that I believe the last warmest year was 1997) Also, aren't scientist required to explain why they have abandoned the viable theory I stated regarding Ice Ages and our current state of falling back into Ice Age vs. coming out of it completely? I can't logically see how they could disprove that theory. I'm sorry to also have to wade into the flatulence debate, but back in my school days, I also remember having learned about the massive herds of bison roaming the plains. Now what kind of "unnatural" impact did massive herds of those creatures have on environment? All these questions must be fully addressed and proved to be false beyond any doubt before I can adopt the man made global warming position and I think a few more scientists should do the same. |

Ok, so hear goes my one main problem with the religion angle and politics. First, I consider myself much more a Conservative/Republican than a Democrat. I'm actually probably a Libertarian, but labels don't really mean much to me except to help tell people where I come from. Saying all that, I'm also an atheist. I have no problem inherently with others believing in God or whatever they want to. The problem I see is that those of the religious persuasion see lack of mention of God in governmental affairs as an attack on their religious freedoms. However, this is a mistake of logic. In this situation there are three main views one could take 1) Promote religion in one way or another, leaving atheists' views shutout as they don't have such beliefs 2) Promote the atheists view and promote that there is no God (this is the view often disregarded in arguments) and thereby disregarding the views of believers and 3) taking religion out of the political discourse altogether. #3 is the idea I support. It is the middle ground. It takes no side in the religion debate. Everyone is free to believe what they want and to express their religious views in public and on their private property, but when the government is involved, they should represent ALL the people in the country, not just one group or another. The government is supposed to represent me too and if the members of said government are supporting religious belief, or demonizing it, they are not respecting the peoples' views.
God has a place in government to the extent each individual uses their religious beliefs to direct their own personal thinking about what should or should not be done. I have no problem with individual governmental officials explaining their personal positions and religious views, but that is different and should be kept separate from congressional prayer, or any other governing functions becoming religionized.
I will use the following example to illustrate why choice #3 is the moderate position. Position #1 is currently the case. Lets picture a world where #2 is the case and how religious people would react to such a scenario. If #2 were true, each day Congress would have at the beginning of the session a proclamation denying the existence of God. Imagine instead of government officials showing outward support and belief in God, they denied his existence and scoffed at such an idea as absurd. If Christians could put themselves in this mindset they would understand how atheists feel. They would also see that this scenario is the natural opposite of the current system and that simply taking away public (Government sponsored and supported) prayer and governmental proclamations of the existence of God, while technically "attacks" on religion in that the power of Christians would diminish, things would actually be moving toward a fairer balance and fairness by the Government to the people.
I've rarely ever seen religious people acknowledge the validity of this argument, but nevertheless it is valid. Just wanted to put it out there and encourage everyone to honestly look at perspectives I presented and decide for yourself how you would feel. Decide for yourselves what you think is most fair for everyone, not just those who share your views. Thanks. |

If you're into HOF Baseball Game Used, there is no better set (in my opinion) than the 2000 Fleer Club 3000 Set! Beautiful stuff. You can see what they look like in my collection thread HERE. Good luck with the collection! |

Thanks for the kind words. I have over 1100 different cards plus items and memorabilia, much of which I don't have scans or pics, so this is just the good stuff. Anyway, some more Bammers (I currently have 23 different ones). If anyone knows of a Salvino's complete checklist, I'd be interested in seeing it. I've done some looking with no luck, so this is my only checklist. #6 April 1999 Salvino's Bamm Bunnies Easter Bunny #7 May 1 2000 Rookie Bammer #/1989 #8 July 12 1999 7th Inning Stretch "Seattle" |
