Collector Zone _ Hockey Group Box Break Marketplace _ Vintage Hockey Pack Busters Group

Posted by: crpalmi Jun 26 2011, 08:58 PM

I know Hockey is a tough sell on TCC as there are only a few hardy souls that collect the sport, but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway. Last month we used this same format for a Baseball Vintage break and it worked pretty well for a fair random assortment between participants. Basically you are randomly assigned a slot from #1-10 (assuming we have 10 slots to sell) and we do the same for round 2 (another 10 slots randomized), etc. until we have enough rounds randomized to cover the number of possible cards that we'll pull from all these packs. This is a great way to have a shot at some great conditioned cards from a variety of years including some incredible rookies at a fraction of the cost. As with any group break, you may come out ahead or you may not but at least with this format everyone should get roughly the same amount of cards and the same shot at all the big $$ cards as it's not team assignments but slot assignments. If you need clarification just check out the Vintage BB Pack Busters thread and how we ran the break.

I'm hoping we can fill 10 slots and I'll start off by taking 3 right away so we're 30% of the way there! The proposed cost on this one which includes shipping/toploaders, etc is $68 for the first slot and $65 each additional. The packs would all be purchased from BBCExchange which is the best in the business for selling good clean packs. Here is my proposed product list;

1972-73 Topps Wax
1975-76 Topps Wax
1976-77 OPC Wax
1977-78 OPC Wax
1979-80 OPC Wax
1979-80 Topps Wax
1981-82 OPC Wax
1982-83 OPC Wax
1983-84 OPC Wax
1984-85 OPC Wax
1986-87 OPC Wax

That's 11 packs including some great possibilities including rookie cards of Gretzky, Yzerman, Roy , Trottier, Savard, Kurri, Coffee, Moog, Murphy, Stastny, Fuhr, Francis, Mullen, Gilmour, Neely, Chelios, Clark, etc., etc..

So who's in for some great chances at some old time hockey greats??

Cost: $68 first slot ($65 each additional)
Product: 11 packs listed above

Available Slots:

2. Crpalmi ----------- PAID
3. Yzerisdaman ------ PAID

I'll take a spot in this

Posted by: crpalmi Jun 27 2011, 11:42 AM

Steve is out of the 85OPC from the full box he had and I want to make sure we get the best chance for stuff straight out of the box so I am having to switch out the 85OPC with 1 pack each of 1984OPC and 1986 OPC which bring chances at still more rookies (Yzerman, Neely, Chelios, Roy, Clark, etc.)!

Brings us to 11 packs in all including the 2 chances at a Gretzky RC!

Tim, I've got you in...who else will join us in this one??

Yep, 85 was Lemieux but due to availability I had switch that out with 84 and 86 which add in Yzerman and Roy along with several others.

I will take 2 spots. You should post this in the group box break forum. More hockey guys there. ( if its not there already ).

Got you down. 4 spots left!

I'll try to post over there if they let me as I don't like to post the same break in multiple spots.

Chris,

Even though I'm mostly CAPS Only for Hockey I do the vintage stuff as well (No Caps before 1974 sad.gif .) Put me down for a spot in here.

That section of the board is for ongoing (monthly breaks) like most of your other breaks are. If it becomes a monthly thing then you can put topic there next time.

Thanks Dwight.

Who else wants in as we have some terrific possible pulls here and the grading possibilities for some of the older stuff could be very interesting. Each slot should yield anywhere from 10-13 cards depending on how many cards are in some of these years packs.

Posted by: crpalmi Jul 3 2011, 10:49 AM

Ok guys, Yzerisdaman has taken the 8th slot but it's been a slow recruit so in an effort to make this break happen I am dropping two of the Topps packs (72, 75) with allows us to drop 2 slots from the budget so with 8 slots filled we are ready to break!

PM's being sent but please send payment as soon as possible as the packs have just been ordered. All are coming from BBCExchange which is by far the most trusted source of older wax products so we should have some great shots at some outstanding cards! With only 8 slots you will get more cards each so here's hoping for some great results!

Posted by: crpalmi Jul 5 2011, 09:52 AM

Good news folks...we have filled slots #9-10 with a new addition to the group in DenverSJB. Also I sold one of my slots to Yzerisdaman. With that we can once again go back to the original product list and bring back the packs of 72T and 75T to the break.

We're full so let's get payment in so we can randomize our rounds and be ready for our first ever Vintage Hockey break! If this continues to work I would like to try this with FB as well so here's to a good break!

Thanks Tim. I am out of town until Friday so unfortunately I can't show any updates on payments until then but I'm hopefull we can hold the break this Saturday. All packs are now in-hand so we're ready to roll as soon as I get back in town to collect payments.

Posted by: crpalmi Jul 15 2011, 07:55 AM

Sorry about the short notice but I just got back in town and have a rare free day/night so let's break tonight!

Payments won't be updated yet as the mail was held while gone so I still have to pick that up but I figure we are probably good to proceed. This month I'd like to set the product list rather than randomize since we have a wide spread of years so we'll start with 1972 and work our way up to 1986 except we will save the two 1979 packs for last opening the Topps and finally OPC as the final pack. Slot order has been determined using Random.org and is listed below. I did 13 rounds but I'm not sure we'll need all of those so don't let that fool you. These are rolling rounds so if the first pack has 14 cards in it (it won't but...) the first 10 cards go to the slot owners and then the next 4 go to the top 4 in order of round 2. We then pick up with slot 5 in round 2 getting the first card in the next pack and so forth. It will make sense when we do it or if I took the time to renumber the slots to be continuous numbers but just think of round 2 as cards #11-20 and so forth.

So I'll send emails or PM's to all those participating due to the short notice but we'll shoot for opening tonight at 8pm(ct). Here is the slot order;

Thanks to all who participated and we'll see about maybe doing this again in a couple months as I'd like to try the Vintage BB group break again next month so if you have interest be sure to let me know.

Thanks all!

Thanks Chris. Was worth it just for the memories as I got started in the hobby opening 80's hockey ! Didn't hurt that I got a couple of Gretzky's. Thanks again !
